A new type of symmetrical banana-shaped material based on N-methyldiphenylamine as a core moiety exhibiting an Ad→A2 transition

The synthesis and characterization of a homologous series of Schiff bases consisting of an N-methyldiphenylamine moiety as the central core is reported, which exhibits smectic A phase and transitions from the partial bilayer SmA_d phase to the bilayer SmA₂ phase as the temperature is lowered.     

Laser induced optoacoustic spectroscopy of benzil: Evaluation of structural volume change upon photoisomerization

The cis-skew to trans-planar photoisomerization of benzil in the photoexcited state was studied by laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy (LIOAS) in a series of normal alkane solvents at room temperature. The structural volume change due to the photoisomerization process has been estimated and compared with the same calculated from the optimized skew and trans structures. The magnitude of the structural volume change is estimated to be 22.9 ± 1.2 mL/mol. This study reveals that an expansion in volume occurs during the photoinduced isomerization process. In non-polar alkane solvents, the estimated volume change has been argued to be free from electrostrictional contribution.     

Novel synthesis of oxocine derivatives by Wittig olefination and intramolecular Heck reaction via 8-endo trig cyclization

A concise and efficient method for the preparation of oxocine derivatives is described via sequential Wittig and intramolecular Heck reactions. The method is highly regioselective and affords high yields of the products.     

Bandgap widening in highly conducting CdO thin film by Ti incorporation through radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique

Transparent and highly conducting thin films of cadmium oxide (CdO) with titanium doping were synthesized by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The thin films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates with different percentages of titanium at a fixed substrate temperature 473 K and a fixed pressure of 0.1 mbar in Ar atmosphere. The deposited films were characterized by studying their crystallographic structure, optical and electrical properties. X-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscope, UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometer were used for different characterizations. All the films have a rock-salt structure. A systematic increase in the optical bandgap was found for the CdO thin films with Ti doping, so that it can be considered as a candidate material for different optoelectronic device applications. Electrical conductivity was also found to increase with Ti doping concentration.     

Synthesis,X‐ray powder structure analysis and biological properties of a mononuclear Cu(II) complex of N‐2‐hydroxyhippuric acid

A mononuclear copper (II) complex of N‐2‐hydroxyhippuric acid (2HHA), [Cu(HA)(H₂O)₂], has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and X‐ray powder diffraction studies. Crystal structure of [Cu(HA)(H₂O)₂] reveals a distorted square‐pyramidal geometry around the metal center. The crystal packing in the complex exhibits a three‐dimensional framework formed by intermolecular O? ; H···O and C? H···O hydrogen bonds. Toxicity and antitumor properties of the complex have been studied in vivo. The complex, capable of depleting glutathione (GSH) at nontoxic doses, may be utilized to sensitize drug‐resistant cells where resistance is due to an elevated level of GSH. Correspondence Between Ricci and Other Dark Energies

Purpose of the present paper is to view the correspondence between Ricci and other dark energies. We have considered the Ricci dark energy in presence of dark matter in non-interacting situation. Subsequently, we have derived the pressure and energy density for Ricci dark energy. The equation of state parameter has been generated from these pressure and energy density. Next, we have considered the correspondence between Ricci and other dark energy models, namely tachyonic field, DBI-essence and new agegraphic dark energy without any interaction and investigated possible cosmological consequences.     

Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-assisted Sagnac switch for designing of all-optical tri-state logic gates

Tri-state logic plays a significant role in carry free arithmetical operation. Design of all-optical scheme of three basic tri-state logical operation (NOT, AND, OR) with the help of polarization encoded semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-assisted Sagnac interferometric switch has been studied and investigated in this present paper. Numerical simulation is also presented, which verifies the theoretical results. Insertion loss, contrast ratio, extinction ratio, amplitude modulation, bit error rate and signal to noise ratio values have also been analyzed.     

Observation of enhanced two-photon absorption in ZnS quantum dots at an ultraviolet wavelength

Two-photon absorption(2PA) in zinc sulphide(ZnS) and Mn2+-doped ZnS quantum dots is reported by the z-scan technique,with nanosecond pulsed laser radiation at 355 nm.The observed values of the 2PA cross section of all the samples are 105 times larger than that of bulk ZnS.
