Large transparent blue crystals of vanadyl pyrophosphate, (VO)(2)P(2)O(7), were grown from a phosphorus pentoxide flux, and the single-crystal X-ray structure of (VO)(2)P(2)O(7) was determined with high precision. On the basis of spin dimer analysis, we examined the spin exchange interactions of (VO)(2)P(2)O(7) and its precursor VO(HPO(4)).0.5H(2)O. Our analysis of (VO)(2)P(2)O(7) using two high-precision crystal structures shows unambiguously that the V3-V4 chain has a larger spin gap than does the V1-V2 chain and that the super-superexchange (V-O...O-V) interaction is stronger than the superexchange (V-O-V) interaction in the V3-V4 chain while the opposite is true in the V1-V2 chain. Our analysis of VO(HPO(4)).0.5H(2)O reveals that the superexchange interaction must dominate over the super-superexchange interaction, in disagreement with the conclusion from a powder neutron scattering study of VO(DPO(4)).0.5D(2)O.  相似文献

The Raman and surface‐enhanced Raman spectra (SERS) of flavone and three of its hydroxy derivatives, 3‐hydroxyflavone (3‐HF) and 5‐hydroxyflavone (5‐HF) and quercetin (3,5,7,3′,4′ pentahydroxyflavone) have been obtained. The normal Raman (NR) spectra were taken in the powder form. The SERS spectra were obtained both on Ag colloids and Ag electrode substrates. Assignments of the spectrally observed normal modes were aided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the B3LYP functional and the 6‐31 + G* basis, a split valence polarized basis set with diffuse functions. Excellent fits were obtained for the observed spectra with little or no scaling. The most intense lines of the NR spectra are those in the CO stretching region (near 1600 cm−1). These lines are often weakened by proximity to the surface, while other lines at lower wavenumbers, due to in‐plane ring stretches, tend to be strongly enhanced. The SERS spectrum of flavone is weak both on the colloid and on the electrode, indicating weak attachment to the surface. In contrast, the SERS spectra of the hydroxy derivatives of flavone are intense, indicating the assistance of OH groups in attachment to the surface. The spectra of the various species are compared, and a case study of application to detection of a textile dye (Persian berries), which contains quercetin, is presented. Radioactive decay rates are to a large extent believed to be independent of the chemical environment. This is the physics basis implicitly assumed in applications such as radioisotope dating. While this statement is a good approximation for most radioactive decays, there are cases where a slight variation of 0.5% or more can be observed, as in the electron capture type of decay. There are renewed interests in possible decay-rate changes with external parameters such as temperature, with controversy as to the phenomenon’s authenticity. In this paper, we study the variation of radioactivity counts that significantly change (up to 50% or more) with temperature. We carefully studied the characteristics of the change and found that the presence of a gaseous decay daughter can pose a serious challenge to a bona fide account of the intrinsic nuclear decay rate. After a careful solution to rate equations of the relevant isotopes under our experimental conditions, we found that most of the radioactivity change could be accounted for by the diffusion and loss of gaseous daughters under the heat, without a supposed change in the intrinsic nuclear decay rate. We hence demonstrate that an accurate determination of the decay constant has to consider the possible diffusion of volatile components in the decay chain. This is especially important in cases involving significant temperature change.  相似文献

Sodium polyacrylate is well known for its application as a scale inhibitor in common household products, and the effects of both monovalent and divalent metal cations on its structure have been covered by a range of previous publications. In the present article, we extend this work by using solvent relaxation NMR to look at the adsorption of the polyelectrolyte onto both positively and negatively charged silica and how this is altered by calcium chloride. In the anionic case, we found that polyacrylate adsorption was predictably very weak, and interestingly, perhaps counterintuitively, it was further reduced by calcium ions. This is probably linked to NaPA-Ca2+ binding, which changes the conformation and charge of the polyelectrolyte. In contrast, NaPA adsorbs very strongly on cationic silica, to the point that precipitation often occurs, particularly on addition of salt.  相似文献

Absolute efficiency calibration of radiometric detectors is frequently difficult and requires careful detector modeling and accurate knowledge of the radioactive source used. In the past we have calibrated the β–γ coincidence detector of the Automated Radioxenon Sampler/Analyzer (ARSA) using a variety of sources and techniques which have proven to be less than desirable (Reeder et al., J Radioanal Nucl Chem, 235, 1989). A superior technique has been developed that uses the conversion-electron (CE) and X-ray coincidence of 131mXe to provide a more accurate absolute gamma efficiency of the detector. The 131mXe is injected directly into the beta cell of the coincident counting system and no knowledge of absolute source strength is required. In addition, 133Xe is used to provide a second independent means to obtain the absolute efficiency calibration. These two data points provide the necessary information for calculating the detector efficiency and can be used in conjunction with other noble gas isotopes to completely characterize and calibrate the ARSA nuclear detector. A depiction of a nonnoetherian integral domain R is a special coordinate ring that provides a framework for describing the geometry of R. We show that if R is noetherian in codimension 1, then R has a unique maximal depiction T. In this case, the geometric dimensions of the points of Spec R may be computed directly from T. Disclosed herein is a stereoselective method for the synthesis of 2,3-furan fused carbocycles bearing adjacent quaternary and tertiary carbon stereocenters. The chemistry is based on an asymmetric addition of β-ketoesters to 2-(1-alkynyl)-2-alkene-1-ones catalysed by natural cinchona alkaloids followed by a silver-catalysed intramolecular cycloisomerisation. By exploiting the distinct catalysis modes of quinine, which can act either as a general base or, upon opportune modifications, as a phase transfer catalyst, a complete switch of the enforced sense of diastereoinduction is achieved. The stereodivergent systems enable access to the full matrix of all possible stereoisomeric products.  相似文献

This article reports findings from a study of an integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education program on student interest and awareness in science and engineering. The analysis features grade 3–5 students from a high-poverty, urban school system in the Mid-Atlantic region. Through the quantitative analysis of closed ended survey responses and the qualitative analysis of an open-ended query, we describe how the adoption of an intensive STEM-focused partnership could influence students’ early interest in and awareness of science and engineering as disciplines and careers. The analysis of the student responses revealed that after 1 year of the project, the students enrolled in the program demonstrated developing interest in science and engineering and were better able to articulate a greater understanding of engineering as a discipline. These findings have implications for the effectiveness of an integrated STEM approach for upper elementary students participating and succeeding in the STEM fields.  相似文献

The roll bonding technique is one of the most widely used methods to produce metal laminate sheets. Such sheets offer interesting research opportunities for both scientists and engineers. In this paper, we report on an experimental investigation of the ‘thickness effect’ during laminate rolling for the first time. Using a four-high multifunction rolling mill, Cu/Al/Cu laminate sheets were fabricated with a range of thicknesses (16, 40, 70 and 130 μm) of the Al layer. The thickness of the Cu sheets was a constant 300 μm. After rolling, TEM images show good bonding quality between the Cu and Al layers. However, there are many nanoscale pores in the Al layer. The fraction of nanoscale pores in the Al layer increases with a reduction in the Al layer thickness. The finite element method was used to simulate the Cu/Al/Cu rolling process. The simulation results reveal the effect of the Al layer thickness on the deformation characteristics of the Cu/Al/Cu laminate. Finally, we propose that the size effect of the Al layer thickness during Cu/Al/Cu laminate rolling may offer a method to fabricate ‘nanoporous’ Al sandwich laminate foils. Such foils can be used in electromagnetic shielding of electrical devices and noisy shielding of building.  相似文献
