Isolation of teratogenic alkaloids by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography was used for both analytical and preparative separations of several steroidal alkaloids which occur in extracts of Veratrum californicum. The inclusion of 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid in the mobile phase improved the efficiency of the chromatography and the solubility of the compounds in aqueous acetonitrile. Nuclear magnetic resonance was used to assist the identification of the isolated steroidal alkaloids. The effect of the interaction of trifluoroacetic acid with the alkaloids could be clearly seen by changes in the chemical shifts in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.     

A novel cyclization/oxidation strategy for a two-step synthesis of (Z)-aurone

An efficient and facile two-step strategy for the synthesis of (Z)-aurone from arylacetylenes and salicyladehydes, via silver(I) nitrate mediated cyclization/oxidation in the presence of potassium carbonate has been developed. The key feature of our method was delicate cascade reaction, to provide the corresponding (Z)-aurone in high yield and good regio- and stereo selectivity.     

Development and validation of a rapid RP‐HPLC method for analysis of (−)‐copalic acid in copaíba oleoresin

The Copaifera species (Leguminoseae) are popularly known as ‘copaíba’ or ‘copaíva’ and are grown in the states of Amazonas, Pará and Ceará in northern Brazil. The oleoresins obtained from these species have been extensively used owing to their pharmacological potential and their application in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations. In the present study, the development and validation of a novel, rapid and efficient RP‐HPLC methodology for the analysis of the diterpene (?)‐copalic acid (CA), pointed out as the only chemical marker of the Copaifera genus, are described. The regression equation (Y = 26,707x ? 29,498) was obtained with good linearity (r² = 0.9993) and the limits of quantification and detection were 9.182 and 3.032 µg/mL, respectively. The precision and the accuracy of the method were adequate (lower than 4%). Finally, the validation parameters evaluated were satisfactorily met, so the developed method represents a suitable tool for application in the quality control of such natural products. Further studies aiming to develop analytical methodologies for each Copaifera species using a more representative number of chemical markers should be performed. On the “Hidden” Harmonics Associated to Best Approximants Due to Quasi-periodicity in Splitting Phenomena

The effects of quasi-periodicity on the splitting of invariant manifolds are examined. We have found that some harmonics that could be expected to be dominant in some ranges of the perturbation parameter actually are nondominant. It is proved that, under reasonable conditions, this is due to the arithmetic properties of the frequencies.

On the Local Convergence Analysis of the Gradient Sampling Method for Finite Max-Functions

The gradient sampling method is a recently developed tool for solving unconstrained nonsmooth optimization problems. Using just first-order information about the objective function, it generalizes the steepest descent method, one of the most classical methods for minimizing a smooth function. This study aims at determining under which circumstances one can expect the same local convergence result of the Cauchy method for the gradient sampling algorithm under the assumption that the problem is stated by a finite max-function around the optimal point. Additionally, at the end, we show how to practically accomplish the required hypotheses during the execution of the algorithm.     

Microwave-Assisted Direct Synthesis of 4H-1,2,4-Benzothiadiazine 1,1-Dioxide Derivatives

Abstract

We describe a rapid and convenient methodology for the preparation of diverse 3-aryl and 3-trifluoromethyl 4H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxides in a one-pot microwave-promoted reaction between 2-aminobenzenesulfonamides and benzaldehydes, trifluoroacetic acid or benzoic acids.

Preparation and characterization of octadecyl acrylate monoliths for capillary electrochromatography by photochemical,thermal, and chemical initiation†

Monolithic stationary phases based on octadecyl acrylate for CEC using different initiating systems (UV irradiation, thermal, and chemical initiation) in the presence of lauroyl peroxide as initiator were synthesized. For each initiation mode, the influence of the porogenic solvent composition on both the morphological and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting monoliths was investigated. Under optimal conditions, excellent efficiencies for the photochemically and chemically polymerized monoliths (minimum plate heights of 6.9–10.7 and 6.5–12.6 μm, respectively) were achieved. Thermally initiated columns gave lower efficiency values, permeabilities, and longer analysis times compared to these initiating systems. The produced monolithic stationary phases were evaluated in terms of reproducibility and gave RSD values below 9.2, 10.6, and 9.8% for UV, thermally, and chemically initiated columns, respectively.
