The effect of differently sized Ag catalysts on the fabrication of a silicon nanowire array using Ag-assisted electroless etching

A simple and low cost method to generate single-crystalline, well-aligned silicon nanowires (SiNWs) of large area, using Ag-assisted electroless etching, is presented and the effect of differently sized Ag catalysts on the fabrication of SiNWs arrays is investigated. The experimental results show that the size of the Ag catalysts can be controlled by adjusting the pre-deposition time in the AgNO₃/HF solution. The optimum pre-deposition time for the fabrication of a SiNWs array is 3 min (about 162.04 ± 38.53 nm Ag catalyst size). Ag catalysts with smaller sizes were formed in a shorter pre-deposition time (0.5 min), which induced the formation of silicon holes. In contrast, a large amount of Ag dendrites were formed on the silicon substrate, after a longer pre-deposition time (4 min). The existence of these Ag dendrites is disadvantageous to the fabrication of SiNWs. Therefore, a proper pre-deposition time for the Ag catalyst is beneficial to the formation of SiNWs.SiNWs were synthesized in the H₂O₂/HF solution system for different periods of time, using Ag-assisted electroless etching (pre-deposition of the Ag catalyst for 3 min). The length of the SiNWs increases linearly with immersion time. From TEM, SAED and HRTEM analysis, the axial orientation of the SiNWs is identified to be along the [001] direction, which is the same as that of the initial Si wafer. The use of HF may induce Si–H_x bonds onto the SiNW array surface. Overall, the Ag-assisted electroless etching technique has advantages, such as low temperature, operation without the need for high energy and the lack of a need for catalysts or dopants.     

The efect of the couple stress parameter and Prandtl number on the transient natural convection flow over a vertical cylinder

An analysis is performed to study transient free convective boundary layer flow of a couple stress fluid over a vertical cylinder, in the absence of body couples. The solution of the time-dependent non-linear and coupled governing equations is carried out with the aid of an unconditionally stable Crank–Nicolson type of numerical scheme. Numerical results for the steady-state velocity, temperature as well as the time histories of the skin-friction coefcient and Nusselt number are presented graphically and discussed. It is seen that for all flow variables as the couple stress control parameter, Co, is amplified, the time required for reaching the temporal maximum increases but the steady-state decreases.     

The early-stage diagnosis of albinic embryos by applying optical coherence tomography

Albinism is a kind of congenital disease of abnormal metabolism. Poecilia reticulata (guppy fish) is chosen as the model to study the development of albinic embryos as it is albinic, ovoviviparous and with short life period. This study proposed an imaging method for penetrative embryo investigation using optical coherence tomography. By imaging through guppy mother’s reproduction purse, we found the embryo’s eyes were the early-developed albinism features. As human’s ocular albinism typically appear at about four weeks old, it is the time to determine if an embryo will grow into an albino.     

Enantioconvergent Biocatalytic Redox Isomerization

Alcohol dehydrogenases can act as powerful catalysts in the preparation of optically pure γ‐hydroxy‐δ‐lactones by means of an enantioconvergent dynamic redox isomerization of readily available Achmatowicz‐type pyranones. Imitating the traditionally metal‐mediated “borrowing hydrogen” approach to shuffle hydrides across molecular architectures and interconvert functional groups, this chemoinspired and purely biocatalytic interpretation effectively expands the enzymatic toolbox and provides new opportunities in the assembly of multienzyme cascades and tailor‐made cellular factories.     

Tuning Ground States of Bis(triarylamine) Dications: From a Closed‐Shell Singlet to a Diradicaloid with an Excited Triplet State

Three bis(triarylamine) dications were isolated by using weakly coordinating anions. Their electronic structures in the ground state were investigated by various experiments in conjunction with theoretical calculations. The ground‐state electronic structures of these species were tunable by substituent effects, with two of them as closed‐shell singlets and one of them as an open‐shell singlet in the solid state. The excited state of the latter is thermally accessible, indicated by EPR and SQUID measurements. The work provides a new and stable diradicaloid structure motif with an excited triplet sate.     

Site-selective C–H nitration of N-aryl-7-azaindoles under palladium(II) catalysis

The site-selective C–H nitration reaction of 7-azaindoles with t-butyl nitrite under palladium catalysis is described. This protocol provides an efficient method for the construction of ortho-nitrated N-aryl-7-azaindoles with excellent site-selectivity and functional group compatibility. The formed 7-azaindole derivatives can be readily transformed into 7-azaindoles containing an aniline functional group under palladium-catalyzed hydrogenation conditions.
