<Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript>1</Subscript> linear interpolator for missing values in time series

We propose a minimum mean absolute error linear interpolator (MMAELI), based on theL ₁ approach. A linear functional of the observed time series due to non-normal innovations is derived. The solution equation for the coefficients of this linear functional is established in terms of the innovation series. It is found that information implied in the innovation series is useful for the interpolation of missing values. The MMAELIs of the AR(1) model with innovations following mixed normal andt distributions are studied in detail. The MMAELI also approximates the minimum mean squared error linear interpolator (MMSELI) well in mean squared error but outperforms the MMSELI in mean absolute error. An application to a real series is presented. Extensions to the general ARMA model and other time series models are discussed. The spectrum of cyclic BSA(ν, 3, λ; α) with α = 2, 3

Balanced sampling plans excluding contiguous units (or BSEC) were first introduced by Hedayat, Rao, and Stufken in 1988. In this paper, we generalize the concept of a cyclic BSEC to a cyclic balanced sampling plan to avoid the selection of adjacent units (or CBSA for short) and use Langford and extended Langford sequences to construct a cyclic BSA(ν, 3, λ; α) with α = 2, 3. We finally establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a cyclic BSA(ν, 3, λ; α) where α = 2, 3. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs.     

Endpoint estimates for certain commutators of fractional and singular integrals

In this paper, the authors obtain the endpoint estimates for a class of non-standard commutators with higher order remainders and their variants. Moreover, the authors show that these operators are actually not bounded in certain cases.

     

Preparation of nanometer MgO by sol-gel auto-combustion

Nanometer MgO was prepared via a sol-gel auto-combustion technique using magnesium nitrate as raw material and citric acid as chelating agent. IR spectra of the dried gel were used to investigate the structure of the precursors. By studying the different TG curves of magnesium citrate gel prepared by different methods, we found that a combustion process occurred and the nitrate ions acted as an oxidant in the combustion process. TEM photographs of synthesized powders from the sol-gel auto-combustion showed that the crystallites were uniform in size. In addition, the XRD pattern of this sample showed that the particle size was 8.9 nm. The BET curves, in turn, showed that the specific surface of the sample was 26.34 m²/g. Indentation responses of piezoelectric films

Frictionless indentation responses of transversely isotropic piezoelectric film/rigid substrate systems under circular cylindrical indenter (i.e., punch), conical indenter (i.e., cone), and spherical indenter (i.e., sphere) are investigated. Both insulating and conducting indenters are considered. The technique of Hankel transformation is employed to derive the corresponding dual integral equations for the mixed boundary value indentation problems. For the two limiting cases of infinitely thick and infinitely thin piezoelectric films, closed-form solutions are obtained. For piezoelectric films of finite thickness, a numerical method is constructed to solve the dual integral equations and semi-empirical models having only two unknown parameters are proposed for the responses of indentation force, electric charge and electric potential, and contact radius. With the two parameters inferred from the numerical results, the semi-empirical formulae are found to provide good estimates of the indentation responses for the two limiting cases of infinitely thick and thin piezoelectric films, as well as those in between. The inferred parameters in the proposed semi-empirical formulae for normalized indentation force and electric charge are checked against four different piezoelectric materials and are found to be insensitive to the selection of piezoelectric materials. It is believed that the proposed semi-empirical indentation formulae are useful in developing experimental indentation techniques to extract the material properties of piezoelectric films.     

Ultrasonic investigation of amorphous carbon in various frequencies at low temperatures from 2.1 to 300 K

Using pulse echo overlap measurement, the elastic behavior of amorphous carbon has been studied at ambient and low temperatures. The smaller ratio B/G of the bulk modulus to shear modulus and smaller Poisson's ratio σ at room temperature indicate that there is an intrinsic stiffening of transverse acoustic phonons in the amorphous carbon. The acoustic velocity and attenuation for longitudinal modes have been measured between 2.1 and 300 K at three frequencies of 7, 21 and 35 MHz, respectively. Their frequency and temperature dependence are observed. The elastic constant C₁₁ increases with decreasing temperature and show enhanced stiffening at low temperatures. In the 130-220 K region, the abnormal change and effect of longitudinal velocity and attenuation with temperature and frequency, and a phase transition associated with structure relaxations are discussed.     

Optimal volume-corrected laplace-metropolis method

The article provides a refinement for the volume-corrected Laplace-Metropolis estimator of the marginal likelihood of DiCiccioet al. The correction volume of probability α in DiCiccioet al. is fixed and suggested to take the value α=0.05. In this article α is selected based on an asymptotic analysis to minimize the mean square relative error (MSRE). This optimal choice of α is shown to be invariant under linear transformations. The invariance property leads to easy implementation for multivariate problems. An implementation procedure is provided for practical use. A simulation study and a real data example are presented.     

Another approach to the heat flow for Plateau problem

For the minimal surfaces in Rⁿ with Plateau boundary condition and establish the global existence and uniqueness of the flow as well as the continuous dependence of the initial datum.     

Miniature InGaAsP/InP phase modulator for integrated opto-electronics

Miniature, etching ridge InGaAsP/InP Phase Modulator with highly efficient phase shifting efficiency of 60°/V.mm and 43°/V.mm for TE and TM modes, respectively, and 3 dB bandwidth of 650 MHz at 1.52 μm are reported. It is well suited for integrated opto-electronics. Some functions depending on bandwidth of the devices are discussed.     

Moment maps at the quantum level

We introduce the notion of moment maps for quantum groups acting on their module algebras. When the module algebras are quantizations of Poisson manifolds, we prove that the construction at the quantum level is a quantization of that at the semi-classical level. We also prove that the corresponding smashed product algebras are quantizations of the semi-direct product Poisson structures.Research partially supported by NSF grant DMS-89-07710
