Longitudinal wave response of a chiral slab interposed between micropolar solid half-spaces

A plane longitudinal displacement wave is made incident upon a chiral slab of uniform thickness, interposed between two different semi-infinite micropolar elastic solids. The amplitude ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are obtained using the two possible sets of boundary conditions. The variations of various amplitude ratios with the angle of incidence as well as with the frequency are depicted graphically, for a specific problem. The effect of chirality parameter and the thickness of the chiral slab on these amplitude ratios have been noticed. Results of some earlier researchers have also been reduced as special cases of present formulation.     

Polarography of Cd-malonate-oxalate complex

The composition and stability constants of mixed malonate oxalate complexes of cadmium have been determined polarographically. The logarithms of the stability constants of complexes Cd(Ox) (Mal)(2), Cd(Ox)(Mal), and Cd(Ox)(2)(Mal) were found to be 3.57,3.86 +/- 0.05 and 4.99 +/- 0.10 respectively.     

Polarography of cadmium malate complexes

The electrode reduction reaction of cadmium malate complexes at various pH values and ligand concentrations has been studied. At pH < pK(1) the complex Cd(H(2)A), log K = 0.57, exists. At pH > pK(2) Cd(A(2-))(n) species exist, log beta(1) = 1.9, log beta(2) = 2.8 log beta(3) = 3.4. At intermediate pH the complex Cd(HA) exists.     

Natural Sphingomonas glycolipids vary greatly in their ability to activate natural killer T cells

Mouse natural killer T (NKT) cells expressing an invariant T cell antigen receptor (TCR) recognize glycosphingolipids (GSLs) from Sphingomonas bacteria. The synthetic antigens previously tested, however, were designed to closely resemble the potent synthetic agonist alpha-galactosyl ceramide (alphaGalCer), which contains a monosaccharide and a C18:0 sphingosine lipid. Some Sphingomonas bacteria, however, also have oligosaccharide-containing GSLs, and they normally synthesize several GSLs with different sphingosine chains including one with a cyclopropyl ring-containing C21:0 (C21cycl) sphingosine. Here we studied the stimulation of NKT cells with synthetic GSL antigens containing natural tetrasaccharide sugars, or the C21cycl sphingosine. Our results indicate that there is a great degree of variability in the antigenic potency of different natural Sphingomonas glycolipids, with the C21cycl sphingosine having intermediate potency and the oligosaccharide-containing antigens exhibiting limited or no stimulatory capacity.     

Investigation of the phase velocities of guided acoustic waves in soft porous layers

A new experimental method for measuring the phase velocities of guided acoustic waves in soft poroelastic or poroviscoelastic plates is proposed. The method is based on the generation of standing waves in the material and on the spatial Fourier transform of the displacement profile of the upper surface. The plate is glued on a rigid substrate so that it has a free upper surface and a nonmoving lower surface. The displacement is measured with a laser Doppler vibrometer along a line corresponding to the direction of propagation of plane surface waves. A continuous sine with varying frequencies was chosen as excitation signal to maximize the precision of the measurements. The spatial Fourier transform provides the wave numbers, and the phase velocities are obtained from the relationship between wave number and frequency. The phase velocities of several guided modes could be measured in a highly porous foam saturated by air. The modes were also studied theoretically and, from the theoretical results, the experimental results, and a fitting procedure, it was possible to determine the frequency behavior of the complex shear modulus and of the complex Poisson ratio from 200 Hz to 1.4 kHz, in a frequency range higher than the traditional methods.     

Synthetic routes for phenazines: an overview

Phenazines are known to exhibit a diverse range of biological properties, such as antimicrobial, antitumor, antioxidant, antimalarial, neuroprotectant, etc. Owing to their significant applications in both medicinal and industrial fields, the phenazine framework has emerged as a remarkable synthetic target. The most general approaches for synthesis of phenazines include the Wohl–Aue method, Beirut method, condensation of 1,2-diaminobenzenes with 2C-units, reductive cyclization of diphenylamines, oxidative cyclization of 1,2-diaminobenzene/diphenylamines, Pd-catalyzed N-arylation, multicomponent approaches, etc. Advances in the exploitation of synthetic routes for assembly of this scaffold are reported in this review.
