The structure of chiratenol (2), the first representative of a new triterpenoid skeletal type, has been established on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy.     

Multi-Item Inventory Aggregation into Groups

The problem of grouping the many items in stock into a few groups with the provision of a common order cycle or common order quantity per group is modelled as a dynamic program. It is shown that by a simple reorganization of the stock items, the computation time of the dynamic program can be reduced to a manageable size. Further the order cycle grouping is shown to be, usually, superior to the order quantity grouping scheme. Also, the composition of the order cycle grouping is found to be remarkably close to that of the well known A/B/C system of stock control therby giving theoretical credence to that system.     

Nonlinear chirp of dispersion-managed return-to-zero pulses

Applying variational methods, we derive a reduced system of equations from the nonlocal equation that governs the average dynamics in dispersion-managed systems. These equations, which apply for any type of return-to-zero pulse, describe the stroboscopic evolution of the pulse parameters and bypass the fast variations inside each dispersion map. In the limit of large map strength we integrate the equations to obtain explicitly formulas for the parameters of a chirped return-to-zero pulse as well as the amount of post-transmission compensation needed to restore the initial pulse width.     

Helical supramolecular host with aquapores anchoring alternate molecules of helical water chains

Unprecedented 1D helical chains of hydrogen bonded water molecules, showing both handedness and anchored onto a helical supramolecular host formed from the self assembly of a dicopper(II) complex (1) containing pentadentate Schiff base (L) and p-hydroxycinnamate in 1.2H(2)O, propagate along the crystallographic 2(1)-screw axis and the compound shows two endotherms due to loss of water molecules at 61.5 and 88.5 degrees C in the differential scanning calorimetry giving an overall change of enthalpy value of approximately 36 kJ mol(-1) per water molecule.     

A qualocation method for parabolic partial differential equations

In this paper a qualocation method is analysed for parabolicpartial differential equations in one space dimension. Thismethod may be described as a discrete H¹-Galerkin method inwhich the discretization is achieved by approximating the integralsby a composite Gauss quadrature rule. An O (h^4-i) rate of convergencein the W^i.p norm for i = 0, 1 and 1 p is derived for a semidiscretescheme without any quasi-uniformity assumption on the finiteelement mesh. Further, an optimal error estimate in the H² normis also proved. Finally, the linearized backward Euler methodand extrapolated Crank-Nicolson scheme are examined and analysed.     

Carbon-13 NMR spectra of some phenanthrene derivatives from Aristolochia indica and their analogues

¹³C NMR spectra of compounds related to aristolochic acid and aristololactam, the constituents of Aristolochia indica, have been studied to determine the chemical shifts and coupling constants of polysubstituted phenanthrenes. Selective ¹H decoupling and long-range couplings were utilized for the assignments. Substituent-induced chemical shifts and also the effects on coupling constants could be deduced in some cases. Anion formation was found to be particularly helpful in the interpretation of the spectra of carboxylic compounds. Shift assignments of some structurally related compounds could also be made.     

Control of the intensity of a single harmonic generated in laser plasma by varying the chirp of intense femtosecond pulses

A significant increase, as well as a decrease, in the intensity of single higher harmonics of femtosecond radiation of a Ti:sapphire laser that are generated in a weakly excited laser plasma on the surface of GaAs, Cr, InSb, In, and stainless steel is demonstrated. The intensities of some higher harmonics in different regions of their plateaulike distribution varied from a 23-fold excess over the intensity of the neighboring harmonics to the complete absence in the extreme ultraviolet spectrum. The specific features of a 200-fold increase in the intensity of the 13th harmonic generated in indium plasma are analyzed. These variations in the intensity distribution of harmonics in the plateau region are obtained by varying the chirp of laser pulses.
