Fermi surface of CeIn3 above the Néel critical field

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CeIn(3) in magnetic fields extending to approximately 90 T, well above the Néel critical field of mu(0)H(c) approximately 61 T. The unreconstructed Fermi surface a sheet is observed in the high magnetic field polarized paramagnetic limit, but with its effective mass and Fermi surface volume strongly reduced in size compared to that observed in the low magnetic field paramagnetic regime under pressure. The spheroidal topology of this sheet provides an ideal realization of the transformation from a "large Fermi surface" accommodating f electrons to a "small Fermi surface" when the f-electron moments become polarized.

Advances towards Cell-Specific Gene Transfection: A Small-Molecule Approach Allows Order-of-Magnitude Selectivity

A transfection vector that can home in on tumors is reported. Whereas previous vectors that allow moderately cell selective gene transfection used larger systems, this small-molecule approach paved the way for precise structure-activity relationship optimization. For this, biotin, which mediates cell selectivity, was combined with the potent DNA-binding motif tetralysine-guanidinocarbonypyrrol via a hydrophilic linker, thus enabling SAR-based optimization. The new vector mediated biotin receptor (BR)-selective transfection of cell lines with different BR expression levels. Computer-based analyses of microscopy images revealed a preference of one order of magnitude for the BR-positive cell lines over the BR-negative controls.     

Pore-Level Modeling of Gas and Condensate Flow in Two- and Three-Dimensional Pore Networks: Pore Size Distribution Effects on the Relative Permeability of Gas and Condensate

We present a mechanistic model of retrograde condensation processes in two- and three-dimensional capillary tube networks under gravitational forces. Condensate filling-emptying cycles in pore segments and gas connection–isolation cycles are included. With the pore-level distribution of gas and condensate in hand, we determine their corresponding relative permeabilities. Details of pore space and displacement are subsumed in pore conductances. Solving for the pressure field in each phase, we find a single effective conductance for each phase as a function of condensate saturation. Along with the effective conductance for the saturated network, the relative permeability for each phase is calculated. Our model porous media are two- and three-dimensional regular networks of pore segments with distributed size and square cross-section. With a Monte Carlo sampling we find the optimum network size to avoid size effects and then we investigate the effect of network dimensionality and pore size distribution on the relative permeabilities of gas and condensate.     

Thermal and structural characterization of SrTi1-xNdxO3

Sr(Ti,Nd)O₃ was synthesized in order to evaluate the influence of the amount of neodymium on the thermal and structural properties of SrTiO₃. The synthesis was carried out using the polymeric precursor method. A small mass gain was observed for the SrTiO₃ and SrTi_0.98Nd_0.02O₃ samples accompanied by an exothermic peak in the DTA curves. Other steps at higher temperatures are assigned to the combustion of the organic material and carbonate. Elimination of defects by previous calcination of the precursors is responsible by the short and long range ordering of the perovskite. Cubic phase was obtained for undoped and doped SrTiO₃.     

Building the Additive Utility Functions for CAD-UFRJ Evaluation Staff Criteria

This paper presents an application of the UTA method for building utility functions for the evaluation criteria defined by the Staff Evaluation Commission (CAD) of the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ). Every year, the CAD-UFRJ gives the staff evaluation results for each Postgraduate Engineering Programme. However, the method used to generate the staff evaluation is assumed unknown. Trying to find the CAD-UFRJ preference structure, the evaluation results supplied by CAD-UFRJ are used to apply the UTA method. Some additional information obtained from the CAD-UFRJ data is incorporated in the optimal solutions analysis.     

Hyperasymptotic evaluation of the Pearcey integral via Hadamard expansions

We describe high-precision computations of the Pearcey integral Pe(x,y) for real x and y by means of Hadamard expansions. Numerical results for (x,y) situated in different regions of the x,y-plane are given to illustrate the levels of precision that can be achieved. Particular emphasis is given to computation in the neighbourhood of the two cusped curves associated with Pe(x,y) across which there is either a coalescence of saddles or a Stokes phenomenon.
