The control of regiochemistry in the synthesis of polysaccharide derivatives is one of the most significant scientific challenges
in the field. Its importance is only further highlighted by the individual successes in synthesis of regioselectively substituted
derivatives, in particular cellulose esters and ethers, over the last 20 years. The availability of these samples and studies
of their properties versus randomly substituted analogs has shown clearly that properties like solubility, aggregation phenomena,
and optical properties depend heavily on the regiochemistry of substitution. We report here on the one-pot synthesis of novel
6-bromo-6-deoxy-2,3-O-acylcellulose derivatives, which as more organic soluble derivatives of 6-bromo-6-deoxycellulose should allow broader exploitation
of the highly regioselective cellulose 6-bromination chemistry. We illustrate the potential of these new derivatives by conversion

The objective of this research is to determine whether Systems Dynamics (SD) is a beneficial method for modelling hospital patient flow from a strategic planning perspective. While discrete event simulation has frequently been used as a tool for analysing and improving patient flow in health care settings, the desire to assess and understand patient flow and resource demand from a more strategic, and therefore aggregate, perspective led to the use of SD. To evaluate the suitability of such an approach, a model was developed in collaboration with the General Campus at The Ottawa Hospital with particular attention paid to the delays experienced by patients in the emergency department. The modelling techniques used, model validation and scenarios tested with the model are discussed, accompanied by comments regarding the appropriateness of SD for such a model. 相似文献

Presented in this paper is a general theory describing the consolidation of a porous elastic soil. The formulation allows for the occurrence of finite geometry changes and finite elastic strains during the consolidation process. The governing equations have been cast in a rate form and the laws which determine deformation and pore fluid flow, i.e. Hooke's law and Darcy's law, are presented in a frame indifferent manner. A numerical technique is described that provides an approximate solution to the governing equations. On the basis of mass spectral studies alone, the relatively new manganese complex, Mn(Et2EBC)Cl2 (Et2EBC = 4,11-diethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo[6.6.2]hexadecane), a homolog of the well proven, peroxide-based laundry bleach, Mn(Me2EBC)Cl2, has been reported to undergo a sequence of 2-electron oxidation steps, ultimately converting its ethyl groups into chelated ethoxo and methylene carboxylato groups, [MnIV{(?OCH2CH2)(?O2CCH2)}EBC)](PF6)2. We report here the isolation and characterization of that unusual product, and provide insight into the remarkable catalytic pathway to its formation. At temperatures above 0 °C, oxidation by aqueous H2O2 reliably transforms Mn(Et2EBC)Cl2 into [MnIV{(?OCH2CH2)(?O2CCH2)}EBC)]2+. The experimental data for this intramolecular ethyl group transformation is consistent with oxygen insertion into a methyl C?CH moiety of the ethyl group, ?CNCH2C(?CH)H2, by the MnIV?COOH functional group. 相似文献

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is a valuable tool for the analysis of molecules
directly from tissue. Imaging of phospholipids is gaining widespread interest, particularly as these lipids have been implicated
in a variety of pathologic processes. Formalin fixation (FF) is the standard protocol used in histology laboratories worldwide
to preserve tissue for analysis, in order to aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. This study assesses MALDI imaging
of phospholipids directly in formalin fixed tissue, with a view to future analysis of archival tissue. This investigation
proves the viability of MALDI-MSI for studying the distribution of lipids directly in formalin fixed tissue, without any pretreatment
protocols. High quality molecular images for several phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SM) species are presented.
Images correspond well with previously published data for the analysis of lipids directly from freshly prepared tissue. Different
ionization pathways are observed when analyzing fixed tissue compared with fresh, and this change was found to be associated
with formalin buffers employed in fixation protocols. The ability to analyze lipids directly from formalin fixed tissue opens
up new doors in the investigation of disease profiles. Pathologic specimens taken for histologic investigation can be analyzed
by MALDI-MS to provide greater information on the involvement of lipids in diseased tissue. 相似文献
