We present a series of related robust optimization models for placing sensors in municipal water networks to detect contaminants
that are maliciously or accidentally injected. We formulate sensor placement problems as mixed-integer programs, for which
the objective coefficients are not known with certainty. We consider a restricted absolute robustness criteria that is motivated
by natural restrictions on the uncertain data, and we define three robust optimization models that differ in how the coefficients
in the objective vary. Under one set of assumptions there exists a sensor placement that is optimal for all admissible realizations
of the coefficients. Under other assumptions, we can apply sorting to solve each worst-case realization efficiently, or we
can apply duality to integrate the worst-case outcome and have one integer program. The most difficult case is where the objective
parameters are bilinear, and we prove its complexity is NP-hard even under simplifying assumptions. We consider a relaxation
that provides an approximation, giving an overall guarantee of near-optimality when used with branch-and-bound search. We
present preliminary computational experiments that illustrate the computational complexity of solving these robust formulations

Strongly interacting bosons in a two-dimensional rotating square lattice are investigated via a modified Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Such a system corresponds to a rotating lattice potential imprinted on a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. Second-order quantum phase transitions between states of different symmetries are observed at discrete rotation rates. The contour tree is an abstraction of a scalar field that encodes the nesting relationships of isosurfaces. We show how to use the contour tree to represent individual contours of a scalar field, how to simplify both the contour tree and the topology of the scalar field, how to compute and store geometric properties for all possible contours in the contour tree, and how to use the simplified contour tree as an interface for exploratory visualization. 相似文献

Studies have been conducted on the melt-spinning and tensile properties of polyethylene fibers. The process whereby a filament of molten polyethylene is converted into a fiber has been noted to occur within an identifiable constriction zone. It has been inferred that this constriction zone results from a mechanical instability caused by different viscous compliances in fiber exterior and interior. This difference makes the skin move faster than the core and creates a flow field that produces a stress-crystallized morphology in the final melt-spun fibers. Birefringence studies on transverse thin sections suggest that the chains are tilted with respect to the fiber axis at an angle which varies with radius but is axially symmetric. Elastic strain in these fibers results largely from cooperative bending and bowing of lamellae. Plastic deformation beyond the yield point appears chiefly to be derived from lamellar tilting in combination with the formation of microfibrillar crystallites. 相似文献

We study the effect of external potential on transport properties of the fermionic two-leg ladder model. The response of the system to a local perturbation is strongly dependent on the ground state properties of the system and especially on the dominant correlations. We categorize all phases and transitions in the model (for incommensurate filling) and introduce “hopping-driven transitions” that the system undergoes as the inter-chain hopping is increased from zero. We also describe the response of the system to an ionic potential. The physics of this effect is similar to that of the single impurity, except that the ionic potential can affect the bulk properties of the system and in particular induce true long range order. 相似文献

The phase behavior of blends of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) undergoing shearing flow was examined. Experiments conducted at a constant level of flow-induced strain found that such flow elevates the phase boundary and pro-motes miscibility. In the framework of the Cahn-Hilliard model for spinodal decomposition, an expression was developed which predicts the effect of an external flow field on the spinodal. The basis for this expression is the minimization of strain energy in a two-component polymer system that is in a thermodynamic state near its phase-separation point. The zero shear viscosities of the blends were measured and demonstrated to be an indication of one- or two-phase flow. 相似文献

Abstract We analyze the efficiency of the international management of the Bay of Biscay anchovy. While a sharing agreement between France and Spain has been in place since 1992, the fish stock collapsed in 2005 and the fishery closed from 2005 to spring 2010. We consider differences in production technologies between both countries and calibrate our model using data from 1987 to 2009. Our results suggest two sources of rent dissipation under the existing sharing agreement: inefficient quota allocation and production inefficiencies due to inflexible national regulations. We present a new way of nanoengineering graphene by using defect domains. These regions have ring structures that depart from the usual honeycomb lattice, though each carbon atom still has three nearest neighbors. A set of stable domain structures is identified by using density functional theory, including blisters, ridges, ribbons, and metacrystals. All such structures are made solely out of carbon; the smallest encompasses just 16 atoms. Blisters, ridges, and metacrystals rise up out of the sheet, while ribbons remain flat. In the vicinity of vacancies, the reaction barriers to formation are sufficiently low that such defects could be synthesized through the thermally activated restructuring of coalesced adatoms. 相似文献

Lactobacillus crispatus is the dominant species in the vagina of many women. With the potential for strains of this species to be used as a probiotic to help prevent and treat dysbiosis, we investigated isolates from vaginal swabs with Lactobacillus-dominated and a dysbiotic microbiota. A comparative genome analysis led to the identification of metabolic pathways for synthesis and degradation of three major biogenic amines in most strains. However, targeted metabolomic analysis of the production and degradation of biogenic amines showed that certain strains have either the ability to produce or to degrade these compounds. Notably, six strains produced cadaverine, one produced putrescine, and two produced tyramine. These biogenic amines are known to raise vaginal pH, cause malodour, and make the environment more favourable to vaginal pathogens. In vitro experiments confirmed that strains isolated from women with a dysbiotic vaginal microbiota have higher antimicrobial effects against the common urogenital pathogens Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecium. The results indicate that not all L. crispatus vaginal strains appear suitable for probiotic application and the basis for selection should not be only the overall composition of the vaginal microbiota of the host from which they came, but specific biochemical and genetic traits. 相似文献
