Identification and quantitative analysis of the intermediate phase in a linear high-density polyethylene

The observation of chain conformation and mobility in polyethylene by solid-state ¹³C magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) permits unambiguous identification and quantitative analysis of an intermediate phase. The carbon-carbon bonds in the intermediate phase adopt, on the average, an all-trans conformation and are more mobile than in the crystalline state (room temperature rate of reorientation ≈ 10⁷ Hz). Comparisons of crystallinities by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, and NMR support the high orientation of the intermediate phase and suggest a lower heat of fusion than for the crystals. Results from ¹³C spin-lattice relaxation and ¹H spin diffusion show that the mass fractions are ≈ 20% and the domain sizes ≈ 36 Å. A new oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids

2-Hydroperoxyhexafluoro-2-propanol (HPHI) is a selective catalytic and stoichiometric reagent for the oxidation of aldehydes to acids under mildly basic conditions.     

Specific allylic-allylic coupling procedures effected by ligand-induced elimination from di(allylic)palladium species

Bis(allylic)palladium complexes can be induced to undergo reductive elimination by replacement of phosphine ligands in the system with π-acidic ligands. The product 1,5-diencs, formed in high yield, are predominantly the ‘head-to-head’ coupled isomers. The bis(allylic)palladium intermediatesmay be formed by addition of an allylic Grignard or trialkyl(allylic)tin reagent to an (η³-allyl)palladiuin chloride complex, or by 1,3-diene condensation. The latter process leads to cydodimerization, ‘unusual’ for palladium catalysed reactions.     

Comparison of packed and capillary columns for practical SFC separations

Summary A newly developed polysiloxane-type packing material shows promise for use in SFC. Relatively polar compounds were eluted from a microbore column with good peakshape using a mobile phase consisting of CO₂ modified with formic acid and water. The latter combination is an effective modifier suitable for use with pressure programming and FID detection.
