A deuterium nuclear quadrupole double resonance study of the ferroelectric phase transition in potassium dihydrogen phosphate

A study has been made of the nuclear quadrupole double resonance (NQDR) spectrum of deuterium in a powdered sample of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, KH₂PO₄ or KDP for short, both as a function of temperature and of percentage deuteration. Double transitions have also been observed and these enable the orientation of the ferroelectric electric field gradient (EFG) tensor to be determined.     

Kinetics of the reaction of C6H5 with HBr

The rate constant for the reaction of phenyl radical with hydrogen bromide has been measured with the cavity-ring-down method at six temperatures between 297 and 523 K. The Arrhenius expression for the H abstraction reaction can be effectively given by: . The values of these parameters are similar to those for the H + HBr reaction, but are in sharp contrast to those for alkyl radical reactions. The gross difference between the alkyl radical reactions and the phenyl and H-atom reactions could be rationalized in terms of the inductive effects of these radicals as measured by Taft's σ* (polar) constants. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Synchronization of signal sampling with liquid pulsation in systems with peristaltic pumps

Method and electronic circuitry are described for synchronization of analytical signal sampling with pulsation of liquid flow in systems with a peristaltic pump. The technique is illustrated for cathodic stripping voltammetry of manganese.     

Influence of a silyl group on an allylic position. A theoretical approach

Allylsilanes show in certain cases a behaviour towards electrophiles which is opposite to that of its carbon homologues. Theoretical calculations using Dewar's MINDO/3 method performed on 3-methyl 3-butenyl trimethylsilane and 2-methyl 2-butene show that geometrical optimization leads to a silicon-allylic carbon bond nearly parallel to the double bond π cloud, and both net atomic charges and HOMO coefficients indicate an inversion between these two substrates.     

Conformation and chiroptical properties of mandelic acids

Using CD data (solution, solid state, various temperatures), X-ray data and MO calculations for a number of substituted mandelic acids (phenylglycolic acids) an attempt was made to explain the different results for the relation between sign of the ¹L_b CD band and substitution pattern as described in the literature for various types of aromatic compounds. Moreover the reported sector rule has been reconsidered taking into account the sign and magnitude of the spectroscopic moments. It has been found that in any explanation of the signs of the ¹L_b CD bands of substituted aromatic compounds both the conformational behaviour and the spectroscopic moments should be taken into account.     

Silver/silver iodide electrodes of the second kind as sensors for cyanide

Silver/silver iodide electrodes of the second kind prepared by electrolytic coating of silver electrodes are advantageous as sensors for cyanide. They are inexpensive and exhibit characteristics similar to those of commercially available ion-selective electrodes. They can be regenerated easily when necessary; this eliminates the lifetime problems generally inherent in iodide electrodes used as cyanide sensors. The preparation, properties and selectivity characteristics of the second-kind iodide electrode are described.     

Electrochemical systems for galvanic cells in organic aprotic solvents: V. Electrochemical behaviour of gamma-butyrolactone

Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) was shown to decompose on the clean surface of Li, Na, K, and their amalgams. Polarization curves were obtained on Pt and “Kovar” electrodes at potentials from 4 to ?4 V vs. Li?Hg in 0.5 M LiClO₄ or vs. K?Hg in 0.5 M KPF₆. GBL was found to reduce electrochemically at potentials more positive than 1 V. Various passivation phenomena provoked by the decomposition of the solvent were observed, hindering cathodic deposition of the alkali metals from solutions of their salts in GBL. The presence of a high-molecular surfactant in the electrolyte suppresses the decomposition of GBL and suggests a path to the deposition of Li on the electrode.     

Zusammenh?nge zwischen Koordination und polarographischem Verhalten unterschiedlicher Alizarin S-Chelate

Zusammenfassung Alizarin S und seine 11-Metallchelate lassen sich an der Quecksilbertropfelektrode reduzieren. Aus der Beeinflussung der diffusionskontrollierten und der Adsorptionsstufe durch die Chelatbildung lassen sich Aussagen über die Konstitution und Ladung der adsorbierten Chelate machen: Beryllium wird in peri-, Aluminium und Gallium werden in ortho-Stellung des Alizarinmoleküls gebunden. Die 11-Chelate des Be und Al sind ungeladen.
