On topological tits buildings and their classification

We define topological Tits buildings. If a topological building Δ satisfies some technical conditions and is irreducible, compact, locally connected and satisfies the topological equivalent of the Moufang property, then it is a building canonically associated with a Lie group. Clinical management of country and western singers

The particular problems faced by country and western singers have not often been studied. While making the words of the songs easily understood and creating a desired mood, country and western singers often strain their larynx. Usually, they do not benefit from the guidance of a vocal coach or have the social or economic background to seek early help or to know how to approach and enter the medical care delivery system. Even when they seek help, many speech pathologists, vocal coaches, and physicians are unfamiliar with their specific problems. Therapy for country and western singers depends on an accurate diagnosis and a clear understanding of their unique problems.     

On the rigidity of magnetic systems with the same magnetic geodesics

We study the analogue for magnetic flows of the classical question of when two different metrics on the same manifold share geodesics, which are the same up to reparametrization.

     

Mechanics of slitting and cutting webs

The quality of edges formed during cutting and slitting of thin polymer webs is important for many industrial applications. To control the edge quality of the separated material, it is necessary to understand cutting. A model is proposed, and the mechanics of cutting are described. Experiments were conducted on polyethylene terephthalate. Photoelastic micrographs were used for qualitative and quantitative observations of the two-dimensional stress distributions. The results of this analysis supported the model for cutting of thin polymer webs. An apparatus was constructed to instrument, monitor and control the web-slitting process. The slitting speed, tension in the web and angle of cut were varied during tests. This allowed a quantitative understanding of the cutting mechanisms to be established. The results of the experiments showed that the in-plane cutting forces were minimally affected by changes in rate or web tension. The angle of cut had a pronounced effect on the in-plane cutting forces and the stability of the cut. The results are a beginning of a mechanistic understanding of deformation taking place during slitting and cutting. The experimentation emphasized an instability in slitting. An understanding of this instability will allow quality web edges with minimal deformation and straight stable cuts to be achieved.     

Spectrophotometric determination of rhenium as perrhenate after extraction of its brilliant green ion-pair with microcrystalline benzophenone

Rhenium (0–40 μg) is determined as pherrhenate spectrophotometrically at 640 nm after its adsorptive extraction at pH 6.0 with Brilliant Green onto microcrystalline benzophenone and dissolution of the solid phase in benzene. The effects of pH and diverse ions are reported. The system is applied to the determination of rhenium on alumina and on carbon catalysts.

Conformations of polymer chains in voids with an external electric field by Green's function methods

The statistical conformations of a length of polymer chain, such as DNA, trapped in a void within a gel under the influence of an external electric field, have been studied by the method of Green's functions. Based upon a rectangular box approximation for the void shape, the method gives an explicit analytical expression for the end-to-end distance (R_x) as a function of applied field strength, number of chain segments coiled within the void, and size of a chain segment. Results of calculations show that the field compresses the entrained coil into more compact configurations, as would be expected. Such compression is believed to affect the electrophoretic mobility of a long chain molecule like DNA in a dilute gel. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Search for non-strange baryonium states in the baryon exchange reaction K−p → Y0pp at 18.5 GeV/c

Narrow baryonium production in the baryon exchange reactions $\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p}\text{→ Λ}\text{p}\text{p}$ and $\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p}\text{→}\text{pK}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p}\text{p}$ at 18.5 GeV/c is investigated in a 12 events/nb experiment performed at the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. No narrow structure is observed in the $\text{p}\text{p}$ mass spectra. Upper limits for production of baryonium states are given as a function of $\text{p}\text{p}$ mass.
