The silicon pixel detector (SPD) comprises the two innermost layers of the inner tracking system oft he ALICE experiment at LHC. Prototype SPD assemblies have been tested in high-energy proton and pion beams at the CERN SPS. The method used for data analysis and the most relevant results in relation to detector performance are presented. A simplified model of the moist axisymmetric Hadley circulation is examined in the asymptotic limit in which surface drag is strong and the meridional wind is weak compared to the zonal wind. Our model consists of the quasi-equilibrium tropical circulation model (QTCM) equations on an axisymmetric aquaplanet equatorial beta-plane. This model includes two vertical momentum modes, one baroclinic and one barotropic. Prior studies use either continuous stratification, or a shallow water system best viewed as representing the upper troposphere. The analysis here focuses on the interaction of the baroclinic and barotropic modes, and the way in which this interaction allows the constraints on the circulation known from the fully stratified case to be satisfied in an approximate way. The dry equations, with temperature forced by Newtonian relaxation towards a prescribed radiative equilibrium, are solved first. To leading order, the resulting circulation has a zonal wind profile corresponding to uniform angular momentum at a level near the tropopause, and zero zonal surface wind, owing to the cancelation of the barotropic and baroclinic modes there. The weak surface winds are calculated from the first-order corrections. The broad features of these solutions are similar to those obtained in previous studies of the dry Hadley circulation. The moist equations are solved next, with a fixed sea surface temperature at the lower boundary and simple parameterizations of surface fluxes, deep convection, and radiative transfer. The solutions yield the structure of the barotropic and baroclinic winds, as well as the temperature and moisture fields. In addition, we derive expressions for the width and strength of the equatorial precipitating region (ITCZ) and the width of the entire Hadley circulation. The ITCZ width is on the order of a few degrees in the absence of any horizontal diffusion and is relatively insensitive to parameter variations.  相似文献

Gadolinium gallium garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) has an extraordinary low-temperature phase diagram. Although the Curie–Weiss temperature of GGG is −2 K, GGG shows no long-range order down to T0.4 K. At low temperatures GGG has a spin glass phase at low fields (0.1 T), a field-induced long-range ordered antiferromagnetic state at fields of between 0.7 and 1.3 T, and, at intermediate fields, an apparent spin-liquid state without long-range order. We have characterized the intermediate field (IF) state through heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and magnetocaloric measurements. Our results show a sharp high-field phase boundary of the thermal irreversibility of the spin glass phase of GGG implying that the intermediate field phase is distinct from the spin glass. The lower field boundary of the AFM phase is shown to have distinct minimum at T0.2 K, in analogy to the minimum in the melting curve of 4He. The existence of such a minimum is confirmed by measurements of the latent heat of the transition below that temperature.  相似文献

Biodegradable polymers are of interest in developing strategies to control protein drug delivery. The protein that was used in this study is Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF) which is a protein involved in the re-epithelialization process. The protein is stabilized in the biodegradable polymer matrix during formulation and over the course of polymer degradation with the use of an ionic surfactant Aerosol-OT (AOT) which will encapsulate the protein in an aqueous environment. The release kinetics of the protein from the surface of these materials requires precise timing which is a crucial factor in the efficacy of this drug delivery system.Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was used in the same capacity to identify the molecular ion peak of the surfactant and polymer and use this to determine surface concentration. In the polymer matrix, the surfactant molecular ion peak was observed in the positive and negative mode at m/z 467 and 421, respectively. These peaks were determined to be [AOT + Na+] and [AOT − Na+]. These methods are used to identify the surfactant and protein from the polymer matrix and are used to measure the rate of surface accumulation. The second step was to compare this accumulation rate with the release rate of the protein into an aqueous solution during the degradation of the biodegradable film. This rate is compared to that from fluorescence spectroscopy measurements using the protein autofluorescence from that released into aqueous solution [C.M. Mahoney, J. Yu, A. Fahey, J.A.J. A review on the recent developments in the field of long‐wavelength (λ >1.2μm) high‐brightness optically‐pumped semiconductor disk lasers (OPSDLs) is presented. As thermal effects have such a crucial impact on the laser performance particular emphasis is given to modelling the thermal behaviour and optimisation of the heat‐sinking. Selected OPSDL devices, realized in different III‐V and IV‐VI semiconductor material systems, with corresponding emission wavelengths between 1.2 μm and 5.3 μm are presented. Specific applications in this broad spectral range are addressed and methods to obtain high output power are discussed in terms of the underlying material properties and device operating principles.  相似文献

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed an electrical pulse-heated Kolsky Bar technique for measuring the constitutive response of metals at heating rates of up to 6,000 K/s and strain rates up to 104 s−1. Under these conditions, which are approaching those found in high speed machining, thermally activated microstructural processes such as grain growth, solid state phase transformation and dislocation annealing can be bypassed, leading to unique non-equilibrium superheated microstructural states. Flow stresses can thus differ significantly from equilibrium high temperature conditions. This paper describes the NIST pulse-heated Kolsky bar technique in detail, including a thorough assessment of uncertainties in temperature and flow stress measurement.
