The effects of the adsorption modes of several low molecular weight (LMW) organic anions (maleate, oxalate, and citrate) on the colloidal stability of corundum-water suspensions have been examined using electrokinetic and shear yield stress (tau(y)) measurements over a broad range of pH conditions and LMW organic anion concentrations. Consistent with previous studies, increasing concentrations of maleate, oxalate, and citrate progressively shift the electrokinetic isoelectric point and pH of the maximum shear yield stress (tau(y,max)) to more acidic conditions. Due to its predominant electrostatic driving force for adsorption, outer-spherically adsorbed maleate possesses a very limited ability to charge reverse the corundum-water interface or bind to the negatively charged corundum surface. By contrast, inner-spherically adsorbed oxalate and citrate can significantly charge reverse the corundum-water interface, with the extent of charge reversal being related to the relative binding strengths of the oxalate and citrate anions. Adsorbed maleate, oxalate, and citrate generate steric barriers to interparticle approach, leading to substantial reductions in the magnitude of tau(y,max) at low to intermediate concentrations of those LMW anions. At the highest anion concentrations investigated, however, increases in tau(y,max) are observed, and can be attributed to the formation of bridging Al(III)-organic surface precipitates, as suggested by in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic measurements of corundum-oxalate suspensions at high oxalate concentrations. The extent of precipitate formation is greatest for the corundum-oxalate system due to the strong dissolution-enhancing properties of the inner-spherically adsorbed oxalate anion (i.e., its ability to generate enhanced concentrations of dissolved Al(III) which can then participate in precipitate formation). The effects of the LMW organic anion adsorption modes on both the forms of the measured tau(y) versus pH data, and the ability to quantitatively compare tau(y) and zeta potential data measured at different corundum concentrations, are also discussed. 相似文献

High-resolution X-ray diffraction data have been collected on the cubic polymorph of antimony(III) oxide (senarmontite) to determine the charge distribution in the crystal. The results are in quantitative agreement with crystal Hartree-Fock calculations for this polymorph, and have been compared with theoretical calculations on the orthorhombic polymorph (valentinite). Information about the nature of bonding and relative bond strengths in the two polymorphs has been extracted in a straightforward manner via topological analysis of the electron density. All the close contacts in both polymorphs are found to be similar in nature based on the value of the Laplacian, the magnitude of the electron density and the local energy density at the bond critical points, and these characterise the observed interactions as substantially polar covalent, similar to molecular calculation results on Si-O and Ge-O. Electrostatic potential isosurfaces reveal the octopolar nature of this function for senarmontite, and shed light on the observed packing arrangement of Sb4O6 molecules in the crystal. 相似文献

The application of classical QSAR and molecular modelling to the inclusion complexation of natural and modified cyclodextrins
(CDs) with carboxylic acid derivatives as guest molecules was examined. Information was available on the thermal behaviour,
in the solid-state of benzoic acid (BA), salicylic acid (SA), and various substituted aminosalicylic acids (3-aminosalicylic
acid, 3-ASA, 4-aminosalicylic acid, 4-ASA and 5-aminosalicylic acid, 5-ASA), as well as on the thermal behaviour of 1:1 molar
ratio physical and kneaded mixtures of these acids with each of three different cyclodextrins, β-, (BCD) 2-hydroxypropyl-β-,
(HPBCD) and γ-cyclodextrin (GCD). The thermal behaviour of the binary (1:1 stoichiometry) mixtures was modelled using stepwise
multiple regression (SMR). Two models for the prediction of the percentage mass loss and enthalpy of dehydration of the physical
mixtures were established with correlation coefficients (r) of 0.79 and 0.92, respectively. Decreased correlation in the thermal behaviour of kneaded mixtures indicated significant
interaction and possible formation of inclusion complexes.

A brief discussion is given of some factors that merit consideration in the analysis of peptides by mass spectrometry, with emphasis on sequence determination. The first systematic study of simple peptides by field ionization (FI) is described, and comparison made with the corresponding electron-impact (EI) ionization spectra, both at low resolution (approx. 1500). The substances examined were either benzyloxycarbonyl or t-butyloxycarbonyl derivatives of di-through pentapeptide methyl esters, containing the amino acids glycine, alanine, leucine, serine, threonine, proline and tyrosine. The incidences of sequence-characteristic cleavage peaks and rearrangement ion peaks were both slightly lower in the FI than the EI spectra, although the peak relative intensities generally were higher under FI conditions. 相似文献

A deterministic algorithm for enumeration of transmembrane protein folds is presented. Using a set of sparse pairwise atomic distance constraints (such as those obtained from chemical cross-linking, FRET, or dipolar EPR experiments), the algorithm performs an exhaustive search of secondary structure element packing conformations distributed throughout the entire conformational space. A new method for detecting hydrogen bonds in the solid state is presented. Using two-dimensional NMR correlation experiments, it is shown that a hydrogen-bond mediated J coupling can be observed in a powder under magic-angle spinning conditions, even though the J coupling is 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the dominant anisotropic interactions encountered in solid-state NMR. Specifically, the observation of a pair of peaks in a two-dimensional 15N-15N solid-state INADEQUATE experiment due to two nitrogens that have no covalent connectivity is attributed to the presence of a J coupling across a linking hydrogen bond. 相似文献
