Synthesis,cytotoxicity and antibacterial studies of symmetrically and non‐symmetrically benzyl‐ or p‐cyanobenzyl‐substituted N‐Heterocyclic carbene–silver complexes

From the reaction of 1H‐imidazole ( 1a ), 4,5‐dichloro‐1H‐imidazole ( 1b ) and 1H‐benzimidazole ( 1c ) with p‐cyanobenzyl bromide ( 2 ), symmetrically substituted N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) [( 3a–c )] precursors, 1‐methylimidazole ( 5a ), 4,5‐dichloro‐1‐methylimidazole ( 5b ) and 1‐methylbenzimidazole ( 5c ) with benzyl bromide ( 6 ), non‐symmetrically substituted N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) [( 7a–c )] precursors were synthesized. These NHC? precursors were then reacted with silver(I) acetate to yield the NHC‐silver complexes [1,3‐bis(4‐cyanobenzyl)imidazole‐2‐ylidene] silver(I) acetate ( 4a ), [4,5‐dichloro‐1,3‐bis(4‐cyanobenzyl)imidazole‐2‐ylidene] silver(I) acetate ( 4b ), [1,3‐bis(4‐cyanobenzyl)benzimidazole‐2‐ylidene] silver(I) acetate ( 4c ), (1‐methyl‐3‐benzylimidazole‐2‐ylidene) silver(I) acetate ( 8a ), (4,5‐dichloro‐1‐methyl‐3‐benzylimidazole‐2‐ylidene) silver(I) acetate ( 8b ) and (1‐methyl‐3‐benzylbenzimidazole‐2‐ylidene) silver(I) acetate ( 8c ) respectively. The four NHC‐precursors 3a–c, 7c and four NHC–silver complexes 4a–c and 8c were characterized by single crystal X‐ray diffraction. The preliminary antibacterial activity of all the compounds was studied against Gram‐negative bacteria Escherichia coli, and Gram‐positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus using the qualitative Kirby‐Bauer disc‐diffusion method. All NHC–silver complexes exhibited medium to high antibacterial activity with areas of clearance ranging from 4 to 12 mm at the highest amount used, while the NHC‐precursors showed significantly lower activity. In addition, all NHC–silver complexes underwent preliminary cytotoxicity tests on the human renal‐cancer cell line Caki‐1 and showed medium to high cytotoxicity with IC₅₀ values ranging from 53 ( ± 8) to 3.2 ( ± 0.6) µM. Rectangular-radial drawings of cubic plane graphs

Rectangular drawings and rectangular duals can be naturally extended to other surfaces. In this paper, we extend rectangular drawings and rectangular duals to drawings on a cylinder. The extended drawings are called rectangular-radial drawings and rectangular-radial duals. Rectangular-radial drawings correspond to periodic rectangular tilings of a 1-dimensional strip. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for plane graphs with maximum degree 3 to have rectangular-radial drawings and a necessary and sufficient condition for triangulated plane graphs to have rectangular-radial duals. Furthermore, we present three linear time algorithms under three different conditions for finding a rectangular-radial drawing for a given cubic plane graph, if one exists.     

Anomalous self-similarity in a turbulent rapidly rotating fluid

Our velocity measurements on quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flow in a rapidly rotating annulus yield self-similar (scale-independent) probability distribution functions for longitudinal velocity differences, deltav(l) = v(x+l)-v(x). These distribution functions are strongly non-Gaussian, suggesting that the coherent vortices play a significant role. The structure functions <[deltav(l)](p)> approximately l(zeta)p exhibit anomalous scaling: zeta(p) = p / 2 rather than the expected zeta(p) = p / 3. Correspondingly, the energy spectrum is described by E(k) approximately k(-2) rather than the expected E(k) approximately k(-5/3).     

Propagation of avalanches in Mn12-acetate: magnetic deflagration

Local time-resolved measurements of fast reversal of the magnetization of single crystals of Mn12-acetate indicate that the magnetization avalanche spreads as a narrow interface that propagates through the crystal at a constant velocity that is roughly 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the speed of sound. We argue that this phenomenon is closely analogous to the propagation of a flame front (deflagration) through a flammable chemical substance.     

Highly symmetric networks derived from cubane-related octametallic complexes of a new oxyanion of carbon, C4O7(4-), each molecule attached to eight neighbors by 24 equivalent hydrogen bonds

Aqueous reaction mixtures containing dihydroxyfumaric acid, M2+ (M = Zn, Co, Fe, and Mg) and acetate ion at room temperature give crystals, suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, of composition [(MII)8(C4O7)4(H2O)12].24H2O, in which the C4O74- component is the alkoxide-tricarboxylate tetra-anionic species -OC(CO2-)3, a new oxyanion of carbon. All four compounds crystallize in the body-centered space group I3m with cell dimensions a approximately 15.0 A. Discrete electrically neutral [(MII)8(C4O7)4(H2O)12] molecules are present, with a cubane-like core consisting of four trigonal prismatic metal centers and four mu3-alkoxo bridges from separate -OC(CO2-)3 ligands. The octametallic molecule is highly symmetrical, with four fac tri-aqua octahedral metal centers tetrahedrally appended to the central cubane-based [(MII)8(C4O7)4 ]8- unit. The molecules assemble in the crystal in a body-centered cubic fashion, each being attached to its eight neighbors by 24 equivalent hydrogen bonds-an extreme example of self-complementarity.     

Arrays for the combinatorial exploration of cell adhesion

A new method for the fabrication of arrays of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkane thiols (ATs) on gold to combinatorially assay surfaces for cell adhesion is reported. A fluorous SAM, which is both cytophobic and solvophobic, was used as the background between the array features. The resulting solvophobic background permits the application of an assembly after conjugation strategy for fabrication. SAMs containing mixtures of ATs and peptide-terminated ATs were generated. Multiple cell types demonstrated differential and specific binding to these surfaces. Additionally, pluripotent human embryonic stem cells proliferated on surfaces generated by this method.     

An ionic liquid-coordinated palladium complex: a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for the Heck reaction

[structure: see text] The monoquaternary product of 2,2'-biimidazole with iodobutane is an ionic liquid that acts as both the solvent and ligand for catalytic reactions. A new palladium complex was prepared by adding PdCl(2) to this ionic liquid to form a catalytic solution that is effective for Heck reactions with good recyclability.     

Spectral properties and dynamics of quantized Henon maps

We study a generalization of the Airy function, and use its properties to investigate the dynamics and spectral properties of the unitary operators on of the form , where is a real polynomial of odd degree, is a real number, and is the Fourier transform. We show that is a quantization of the classical Henon map

and show that for 0$"> sufficiently large, has purely continuous spectrum. This fact has implications for the dynamics of , which are shown to correspond when the condition is satisfied to the dynamics of its classical counterpart on .
