The completion of the classification of the regular near octagons with thick quads

Brouwer and Wilbrink [3] showed the nonexistence of regular near octagons whose parameters s, t₂, t₃ and t satisfy s ≥ 2, t₂ ≥ 2 and t₃ ≠ t₂(t₂+1). Later an arithmetical error was discovered in the proof. Because of this error, the existence problem was still open for the near octagons corresponding with certain values of s, t₂ and t₃. Studies on the conversions of diols and cyclic ethers—49: Stereochemistry of cyclodehydration of 1,4-diols on the action of brönsted and lewis acids: a comprehensive study

The stereochemistry of the cyclodehydration of (±)- and meso-2,5-hexanediol on the action of various dehydrating agents was investigated. The earlier assumed and confirmed intramolecular S_N2 mechanism for acid-catalysed ring-closure was found to hold in most cases. Various extents of racemisation can be observed on the action of certain Lewis acids, and the solvents concentrated H₂SO₄ and HMPT (hexamethyl phosporic acid triamide) under previously unexamined reaction conditions.     

Evaluation of a dual electrospray ionization/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source at low flow rates (∼50 µL/min) for the analysis of both highly and weakly polar compounds

The atmospheric pressure ionization (API) source for a commercial mass spectrometer was modified to operate as a dual source in both the electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) techniques by simultaneously utilizing the electrospray probe and the corona discharge needle. A switching box was designed to operate in either manual or programmable modes to permit rapid switching between ionization techniques without changing sources, probes, or breaking vacuum. The source can be operated using the following ionization techniques: ESI only, APCI only, ESI/APCI simultaneously, and ESI/APCI alternatingly. The optimum operating conditions for these ionization techniques were similar to the manufacturer’s original specifications except that the APCI flow rate was lower (～50 µL/min versus 1000 µL/min) and externally heated nebulizing gas was found to be desirable. A four-component mixture, introduced by flow injection, was used to demonstrate the versatility of the dual ESI/APCI source.     

Study of the interaction between ethanol and natural amino acids containing ionic side groups in water at T = 298.15 K

The enthalpies of solution of l-α-aspartic acid, l-α-glutamic acid, l-α-arginine, l-α-lysine, and l-α-histidine have been measured in aqueous ethanol solutions at 298.15 K. From the obtained experimental results, the standard enthalpies of solution of amino acids in water–ethanol solutions have been determined. These data were used to calculate the heterogeneous enthalpic pair interaction coefficients based on McMillan–Mayer’s formalism. These values were interpreted in the terms of the ionic or no polar effect of the side chains of l-α-amino acids on their interactions with a molecule of ethanol in water.     

Experimental realization of linear-optical partial swap gates

We present a linear-optical implementation of a class of two-qubit partial SWAP gates for polarization states of photons. Different gate operations, including the SWAP and entangling sqrt[SWAP], can be obtained by changing a classical control parameter, namely, the path difference in the interferometer. Reconstruction of output states, full quantum process tomography, and an evaluation of entanglement of formation prove very good performance of the gates.
