Magnetically separable Pd catalyst for highly selective epoxide hydrogenolysis under mild conditions

A magnetically separable palladium catalyst was synthesized simply through a sol-gel process incorporating palladium nanoparticles and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in aluminum oxyhydroxide matrix, which is highly active and selective for epoxide hydrogenolysis at room temperature under 1 atm H2. The catalyst was recycled for 25 times without loss of the activity.     

Comparison Study of Phenylquinoline-based Iridium(III) Complexes for Solution Processable Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes by PEDOT:PSS and Graphene Oxide as a Hole Transport Layer

Electroluminescent (EL) properties of Ir(III) complex, [(2,4-diphenylquinoli-ne)]₂Iridium picolinic acid N-oxide [(DPQ)₂Ir(pic-N-O)] were investigated using PEDOT:PSS and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a hole transport layer for solution processable phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). High performance solution-processable PhOLED with PEDOT:PSS and (DPQ)₂Ir(pic-N-O) (8 wt%) doped CBP:TPD:PBD (8:56:12) host emission layer were fabricated to give a high luminance efficiency (LE) of 26.9 cd/A, equivelent to an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.2%. The corresponding PhOLED with rGO as a hole transport layer exhibited the maximum brightness and LE of 13540 cd/m² and 16.8 cd/A, respectively. The utilization of the solution processable rGO thin films as the hole transport layer offered the great potential to the fabrication of solution processable PhOLEDs.     

Berth scheduling for container terminals by using a sub-gradient optimization technique

A method for establishing a berth schedule consisting of berthing times and berthing positions of containerships in port container terminals is addressed in this paper. Each vessel requires a specific amount of space on the berth during a predetermined length of time for unloading and loading containers. The berth schedule must be constructed in a way to satisfy requests from carriers on berthing times and minimize handling efforts during ship operation. A mixed integer program is formulated for the berth-scheduling problem, which can be solved using a commercial package. In order to overcome the computational load of the mixed integer program, the formulation is converted into another integer linear program in which the solution space of the berth and the time is discretized. A Lagrangean relaxation model of the discretized model is solved using a sub-gradient optimization technique. Results of a numerical experiment are provided and discussed.     

The thermal width of heavy quarkonia moving in quark–gluon plasma

The velocity dependence of the thermal width of heavy quarkonia traveling with respect to the quark–gluon plasma is calculated up to the NLO in perturbative QCD. At the LO, the width decreases with increasing speed, whereas at the NLO it increases with a magnitude approximately proportional to the expectation value of the relative velocity between the quarkonium and a parton in thermal equilibrium. Such an asymptotic behavior is due to the NLO dissociation cross section converging to a nonvanishing value in the high energy limit.     

Sweep optical frequency synthesizer with a distributed-Bragg-reflector laser injection locked by a single component of an optical frequency comb

A sweep optical frequency synthesizer is demonstrated by using a frequency-stabilized optical frequency comb and injection-locked distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) laser diode. The injection-locked DBR laser acts as a single-frequency filter and, simultaneously, a high-gain amplifier of the optical frequency comb. The frequency instability of the heterodyne beat signal between two independently injection-locked DBR lasers is measured to be 2.3 x 10(-16) at 1 s averaging time. The output frequency of the sweep optical frequency synthesizer can be precisely tuned over 1 GHz, and a saturated absorption spectrum of the Cs D2 line at 852 nm is recorded by the injected DBR laser.     

Complement activation by sulfonated poly(ethylene glycol)-acrylate copolymers through alternative pathway

Previously, novel poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and sulfonated PEG acrylate (PEG-SO₃A/OA) copolymers were prepared as coating and/or blending materials for biomedical applications. Surfaces modified with copolymers exhibited increased anti-coagulation properties and decreased plasma adsorption level due to increased hydrophilic properties and reorientation characteristics of PEG/PEG-SO₃A chains in water phase. As continuation study, anti-complement effects of PEG-SO₃/OA copolymers were investigated in vitro, and compared with those of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and PEG/OA. C3 activation by PEG-SO₃/OA samples was lower than that by PEG/OA samples, which was attributed to decreased surface nucleophile level of samples. PEG-SO₃/OA samples increased inhibition of Bb production, resulting in decreased C5 activation. Owing to reduced activations of C3 and C5, PEG-SO₃/OA samples markedly decreased SC5b-9 levels in plasma.     

A colorimetric probe for the selective naked-eye detection of Pb(II) ions in aqueous media
