Nonlinear attractor dynamics in the fundamental and extended prism adaptation paradigm

Adaptation and re-adaptation processes are studied in terms of dynamic attractors that evolve and devolve. In doing so, a theoretical account is given for the fundamental observation that adaptation and re-adaptation processes do not exhibit one-trial learning. Moreover, the emergence of the latent aftereffect in the extended prism paradigm is addressed.     

Decomposition of products in nilpotent table algebras

Two theorems on the decomposition of products in nilpotent commutative table algebras are established. This generalizes several results of Adan-Bante on the decomposition of products of irreducible characters and of conjugacy classes of finite p-groups, and extends these results to fusion rule algebras and association schemes.     

Linear and nonlinear optical characterization of a tetraphenylporphyrin-carbon nanotube composite system

We present a study of tetraphenylporphyrin composites formed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Stable porphyrin/SWNT composite solutions were obtained by non-covalent bonding between the carbon nanotubes and conjugated tetraphenylporphyrin molecules. Transmission electron microscopy reveals porphyrin molecules adhering to the nanotube surface. We report on the first complete linear and nonlinear optical characterization of these nanocomposite materials. The composite solutions were found to be superior optical limiters to nanotubes alone, and to all porphyrin systems studied, including metalloporphyrins.     

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of semiconductor particles

Abstract

The field of nonlinear optics is briefly introduced, followed by a review of quantum size effects in small semiconductor particles, with special reference to the linear and nonlinear optical properties. Experimental methods, especially the “laser induced grating” technique are described. Semiconductor (CdS _x Se_1?x ) doped glasses are examined, both the commercially available niters and a specially made experimental CdSe doped glass. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed. Colloidal and polymers systems are also briefly discussed.
