Study of pp and ΛΛ production in π±p reactions at 18.5 GeV/c

Studies have been made of the rare reactions $\text{π}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{p}\text{→ π}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{pp}\text{p}$ and $\text{Λ +}\text{Λ}\text{+}\text{anything}$, and of $\text{π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p}\text{→ π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{pp}\text{p}$ and $\text{Λ +}\text{Λ}\text{+}\text{anything}$, with cross sections of 18.5 ± 5.5, 10.7 ± 3.0, 12.0 ± 5.0, and 19.7 ± 4.8 μb, respectively. Production characteristics of these reactions are examined and effective-mass spectra are presented. There is no significant evidence in the data for production of Ψ(3095) in the baryon-antibaryon system, or for any other high-mass resonances.     

The reaction between palladium(II) and complexes of 8-quinolinol-5-sulfonic acid

Anomalous results for the reaction between palladium(II) and fluorescent complexes of 8-quinolinol-5-sulfonic acid were found to be due to a slow reaction. Heating the solution permits the determination of palladium(II) in combination with copper(II) or nickel(II), the two cations being titrated stepwise The approximate value for the overall formation constant of the PdL₂^2- complex was determined.     

Applications of electrofocusing

Electrofocusing is an electrophoretic technique in which a protein or peptide migrates through a pH gradient under the influence of an electric current until it reaches the pH where its net charge is zero, this is the isoelectric point, pl. Inherent in electrofocusing is a concentrating effect which counteracts diffusion and provides much greater resolution than most other electrophoretic techniques. It has been used to great advantage in the isolation and identification of genetic variants of many proteins.     

Anion exchange method for the sequential determination of uranium,thorium and lead-210 in coal and coal ash

A radiochemical procedure is presented for the sequential determination of uranium isotopes, thorium isotopes, and²¹⁰Pb in coal and coal ash. This procedure consists of dry ashing the sample, a nitric—hydrofluoric acid dissolution, removal of iron with ether extractions, and separation of the elements of interest by anion exchange chromatography. Uranium and thorium isotopes are measured by alpha spectrometry, while²¹⁰Pb is measured by beta counting its daugther activity,²¹⁰Bi. For 10 g coal samples and 1 g ash samples, the chemical yields for the radioactivities measured were 70–80%, and the relative standard deviations for replicate analyses were generally less than 9%. The deviations of the means from the reference values were within the combined errors of each and were usually less than ±5%. Minimum detectable activities were about 0.02 pCi for uranium and thorium isotopes and 0.2 pCi for²¹⁰Pb.
