Equilibrium partition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a cloud-point extraction process

A cloud-point extraction (CPE) process using the nonionic surfactant Tergitol 15-S-7, a secondary ethoxylated alcohol, to extract selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solutions is investigated. The CPE process is facilitated at the ambient temperature, ca. 22 degrees C, by the reduction of the cloud-point temperature of the surfactant solution by addition of sodium sulfate. It is observed that the preconcentration factor could be enhanced either by increasing the salt concentration or by decreasing the initial surfactant concentration in the micellar solution. A high preconcentration factor of about 40 was achieved at 1 wt% surfactant concentration with the addition of 0.6 M Na(2)SO(4). It is also noted that the equilibrium partition coefficients of the model PAHs are nearly independent of surfactant concentrations, up to 3 wt%, in this study. Correlations between the equilibrium partition coefficients K(p) of the PAHs and their octanol-water partition coefficients K(ow), as well as K(p) and the molar volume V(x) of these PAHs, indicate that the partition processes of the PAHs in the CPE processes are mainly governed by their hydrophobic affinities to the surfactant aggregates. Furthermore, the effect of added Na(2)SO(4) on the equilibrium partition coefficients is also studied. It is shown that addition of more Na(2)SO(4) to the surfactant solution gives more partition of the PAHs into the surfactant-rich phase.

Capillary zone electrophoresis of alpha-helical diastereomeric peptide pairs with anionic ion-pairing reagents

The present study uses an unique capillary electrophoresis (CE) approach, that we have termed ion-interaction capillary zone electrophoresis (II-CZE), for the separation of diastereomeric peptide pairs where a single site in the centre of the non-polar face of an 18-residue amphipathic alpha-helical peptide is substituted by the 19 L- or D-amino acids. Through the addition of perfluorinated acids at very high concentrations (up to 400 mM), such concentration levels not having been used previously in chromatography or CE, to the background electrolyte (pH 2.0), we have been able to achieve baseline resolution of all 19 diastereomeric peptide pairs with an uncoated capillary. Since each diastereomeric peptide pair has the same sequence, identical mass-to-charge ratio and identical intrinsic hydrophobicity, such a separation by CZE has previously been considered theoretically impossible. Excellent resolution was achieved due to maximum advantage being taken of even subtle disruption of peptide structure/conformation (due to the presence of D-amino acids) of the non-polar face of the amphipathic alpha-helix and its interaction with the hydrophobic anionic ion-pairing reagents. In addition, due to the excellent resolution of diastereomeric peptide pairs by this novel CZE approach, we have also been able to separate a mixture of these closely-related alpha-helical peptides.     

Luminescent heteronuclear Au(I)5Ag(I)8 complexes of [1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3]3- (R = H, CH3, But) by cyclotrimerization of arylacetylides

Unusual AuI-AgI heterometallic complexes [Au5Ag8(mu-dppm)4{1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}(CCC6H4R-4)7]3+ (R = H 1, CH3 2, But 3) were isolated by reactions of polymeric silver arylacetylides (AgCCC6H4R-4)n with binuclear gold component [Au2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), in which cyclotrimerization of arylacetylide -CCC6H4R-4 affords trianion {1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}3- with an unprecedented mu5-bonding mode. Compounds 1(SbF6)3-3(SbF6)3 exhibit intense photoluminescence derived from an MLCT (Au5Ag8 --> CCC6H4R-4) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered excited states.     

Synthesis of conducting polyaniline using novel anionic Gemini surfactant as micellar stabilizer

The Gemini surfactant 9B-4-9B containing sodium sulfonate as hydrophilic head group was synthesized based on nonylphenol and characterized by FTIR, ¹H NMR spectroscopy and the surface tension measurement. The CMC and C₂₀ of the 9B-4-9B were smaller than that of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and sodium dodecylsulfate, respectively, indicating excellent efficiency of micelle formation and reduced surface tension. Conducting polyaniline salts were synthesized by chemical oxidative micellar polymerization of aniline in water firstly using Gemini surfactant 9B-4-9B as the micelle stabilizer and ammonium peroxydisulfate as the oxidant at 0 °C. The stable polyaniline dispersions have been obtained when the molar ratio of the 9B-4-9B to aniline was equal to or above 0.5 used in the polymerization system. The obtained granular polyaniline particles with the size of 1-2 μm were characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, SEM, WAXD and conductivity measurement.     

Determination of sophoridine and related lupin alkaloids using tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium electrogenerated chemiluminescence

Electrogenerated chemiluminescences (ECLs) based on tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)₃²⁺) and lupin alkaloids, for instance, sophoridine (SRI), matrine (MT), sophoranol (SR) and sophocarpine (SC) in an aqueous alkaline buffer solution (pH 9.0) are studied. The light emission is mainly caused by an electro-oxidation reaction between tertiary amino group on the alkaloid compounds and Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ in a thin layer flow cell equipped with a glassy carbon disc electrode (22.1 mm²) at the potential of +1.50 V (versus Ag/AgCl). The luminescence wavelength of 610 nm confirmed that ECL is caused by Ru(bpy)₃^2+∗ to its ground state. ECL intensities of these lupin alkaloids are affected by the substituent character, three-dimensional conformation of hydrogen on β-carbon atom. Ionization potentials taken from calculation data further confirm the experimental results. In addition, the factors affecting the determination and HPLC separation of the four alkaloids are also investigated.     

Double anionic cycloaromatization of 2-(6-substituted-3-hexene-1,5-diynyl)benzonitriles initiated by methoxide addition

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 2-((3Z)-undecene-1,5-diynyl)benzonitrile with 5 equiv of sodium methoxide in refluxing methanol for 16 h gave 1-pentyl-6-methoxyphenanthridine in 12% yield, 1-pentyl-6-phenanthridone in 6% yield, and 2-(2-pentyl-6-methoxyphenyl)benzonitrile in 4% yield. Under the same reaction conditions, methanolysis of several other benzonitriles gave similar results. Phenanthridine and biphenyl derivatives were obtained as the major products. A mechanism for this novel cycloaromatization reaction of enediynes is proposed.

Terpenoic acid glycerides from the dorid nudibranch Archidoris montereyensis

Extracts of the dorid nudibranch $\text{Archidoris montereyensis}$ contain a diterpenoic acid glyceride 1 whose structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction analysis. The structure of a minor metabolite, the sesquiterpenoic acid glyceride 2, was determined by chemical correlation.
