Study of the reaction238U (α, α′f) atE α=480 MeV

The excitation function of the fission probability P _E E _x) for²³⁸U has been measured in the reaction²³⁸U(α, α′ f) at 480 MeV bombarding energy. The reaction mechanism of this reaction is discussed for excitation energies belowB _nf , the threshold for second chance fission, and aboveB _nf up toE _x =37 MeV. In comparing with results from fission induced by photons and by particle transfer reactions the (α, α′f) reaction gives too low values for the fission probabilityP _f at excitation energies well aboveB _nE . The role of the quasi-elastic knock-out process in this reaction is discussed.     

High-field magnetic phases of a two-leg spin ladder: Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4

CHCupCl is a two-leg spin-ladder where the Cu⁺⁺ ions are coupled by superexchange. Its magnetic properties change dramatically as a function of a magnetic field. Below the critical field H_c1, there is a singlet ground state separated from the triplet excited state by an energy gap. Between H_c1 and H_c2, several magnetic phases have been observed. Above 1 K, dynamical studies reveal a disordered quantum critical phase. At lower temperatures, a 3-D ordered phase has been observed in specific heat and NMR studies. New NMR results on the 3D-ordered and quantum critical phases are presented in this short report.     

Two-Photon Absorption and Cell Imaging of Fluorene-Functionalized Epicocconone Analogues

Epicocconone 1 is a natural chromophore isolated from the fungus Epicoccum nigrum that has shown applications in proteomics and fluorescent microscopy thanks to its unique pro-fluorescence properties. The modification of the skeleton of the natural product by replacing the triene side chain by a fluorenyl scaffold can noticeably increase the fluorophore's absorption coefficient. The synthesis of the analogues of the natural product has been made possible by the use of a palladium-catalyzed carbonylation reaction, allowing the construction of the β-keto-dioxinone key intermediate. Two-photon absorption cross-section measurements of the fluorenyl epicocconone analogues show a structure dependency with values ranging from 60 to 280 GM and live cell imaging show intense staining of intracellular vesicle-like structures around the nucleus.     

Copper-Photocatalyzed Borylation of Organic Halides under Batch and Continuous-Flow Conditions

The copper-photocatalyzed borylation of aryl, heteroaryl, vinyl and alkyl halides (I and Br) was reported. The reaction proceeded using a new heteroleptic Cu complex under irradiation with blue LEDs, giving the corresponding boronic-acid esters in good to excellent yields. The reaction was extended to continuous-flow conditions to allow an easy scale-up. The mechanism of the reaction was studied and a mechanism based on a reductive quenching (Cu^I/Cu^I*/Cu⁰) was suggested.     

Everything you wanted to know about phase and reference frequency in one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy

The fundamental concept of phase discussed in this tutorial aimed at providing students with an explanation of the delays and processing parameters they may find in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulse programs. We consider the phase of radio-frequency pulses, receiver, and magnetization and how all these parameters are related to phases and offsets of signals in spectra. The impact of the off-resonance effect on the phase of the magnetization is discussed before presenting an overview of how adjustment of the time reference of the free induction decay avoids first-order correction of the phase of spectra. The main objective of this tutorial is to show how the relative phase of a pulse and the receiver can be used to change the reference frequency along direct and indirect dimensions of NMR experiments. Unusual of phase incrementation with non-90° angles will be illustrated on one- and two-dimensional NMR spectra.     

Intertwined Detection and Recognition Roles of Tetrazine in Synergistic Anion-π and H-bond Based Anion Receptor

The intrinsic properties of tetrazine as a π-anion receptor and as an on/off recognition probe merged with H-bond ability of an urea motif into a single architecture constitutes a new generation of well-defined anion receptors. Complexation properties directly benefit from the dual and synergistic contribution of tetrazine and urea. In this study, we report on the synthesis and assessment of binding properties to anions of diverse geometries. Association constants have been predicted by theoretical calculations and evaluated by multiple and complementary experimental techniques including electrospray-mass tandem spectroscopy, NMR, UV-visible, steady state fluorescence spectroscopies and time resolved fluorescence. These results provide the basis for a better understanding of both the complexation and the anion-dependent quenching mechanism.     

NMR hyperfine spectrum of 143Nd in ferromagnetic cubic intermetallic NdAl2

The hyperfine spectrum of ¹⁴³Nd in NdAl₂ measured at T = 1.4 K provides values of ∣a_t∣ = 786 ± 0.5 MHz and ∣P_t∣ = 3.25 ± 0.03 MHz. The latter value is in agreement with the expected calculated value obtained from the 4f ground state wave function in a crystal field plus molecular field model, which may be deduced from inelastic neutron scattering experiments combined with susceptibility measurements, or from polarized neutron diffraction experiments. It is shown that the 4f electronic moment can be directly obtained from zero field NMR with good accuracy.     

Lévy area with a drift as a renormalization limit of Markov chains on periodic graphs

A careful look at rough path topology applied to Brownian motion reveals new possible properties of the well-known Lévy area, in particular the presence of an intrinsic drift of this area. Using renormalization limit of Markov chains on periodic graphs, we present a construction of such a non-trivial drift and give an explicit formula for it. Several examples with explicit computations are included.
