Indirect interactions between localized magnetic moments in intrinsic semiconductors

The indirect interaction between localized magnetic moments in insulators and semiconductors is investigated at T = 0°K. This interaction arises from virtual excitations of the valence electrons to the conduction band and is oscillatory as a function of distance. The passage from the case of small gap semiconductors to insulators is studied in detail, as a function of the energy gap and the effective masses. The Bloembergen-Rowland interaction is derived as a limiting case for insulators. Possible applications are also discussed.

Markov modulation of a two-sided reflected Brownian motion with application to fluid queues

In this paper, we study a reflected Markov-modulated Brownian motion with a two sided reflection in which the drift, diffusion coefficient and the two boundaries are (jointly) modulated by a finite state space irreducible continuous time Markov chain. The goal is to compute the stationary distribution of this Markov process, which in addition to the complication of having a stochastic boundary can also include jumps at state change epochs of the underlying Markov chain because of the boundary changes. We give the general theory and then specialize to the case where the underlying Markov chain has two states.     

Generic Profit Singularities in Time-Averaged Optimization for Cyclic Processes in Polydynamical Systems

We consider the optimization problem of maximizing the time-averaged profit for the motion of a smooth polydynamical system on the circle in the presence of a smooth profit density. If the problem depends on a k-dimensional parameter, then the optimal averaged profit is a function of the parameter. It is known from [4] that an optimal motion can always be selected among stationary strategies and a special type of periodic motions called level cycles. We present a classification of all generic singularities of the optimal averaged profit if k?≤?2 and the maximum is provided by level cycles.     

Spin-2 Fields and Helicity

By considering the irreducible representations of the Lorentz group, an analysis of the different spin-2 waves is presented. In particular, the question of the helicity is discussed. It is concluded that, although from the point of view of representation theory there are no compelling reasons to choose between spin-2 waves with helicity σ=±1 or σ=±2, consistency arguments of the ensuing field theories favor waves with helicity σ=±1.     

Chromatographic aspects in high throughput liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry

Important parameters to consider when developing a liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) method are buffer type and concentration, and column geometry. In the work presented here the choice of buffer for the analysis of basic compounds using a polar embedded phase (HyPURITYtrade mark ADVANCE) is illustrated for the analysis of tricyclic antidepressants. Method transfer from a 4.6 mm i.d. column to a 2.1 mm i.d. column is demonstrated for the analysis of triazines and anabolic steroids and their metabolites, with no change in selectivity and with added speed of analysis. Analysis of eight beta-blockers is achieved in 65 seconds by using a short 30 x 4.6 mm C18 column.     

Synthesis and electrochemical reaction with lithium of mesoporous iron oxalate nanoribbons

Mesoporous FeC 2O 4 was prepared by dehydration of bulk monoclinic- and micellar orthorhombic FeC 2O 4.2H 2O precursors at 200 degrees C. The micellar material shows nanoribbon shaped particles, which are preserved after dehydration. These solids are used as high-capacity lithium storage materials with improved rate performance. The mesoporous nanoribbons exhibit higher capacities close to 700 mA h/g after 50 cycles at 2C (C = 1 Li h (-1) mol (-1)) rate between 0 and 2 V.     

Analysis of beers from Brazil with synchrotron radiation total reflection X-ray fluorescence

Summary In this study the concentrations of P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Zn and Br in twenty-nine brands of national and international beers were determined by synchrotron radiation total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis (SR-TXRF). The results were compared with the limits established by the Brazilian legislation and the nutritional values established by National Agricultural Library (NAL, USA). The measurements were performed at the X-Ray Fluorescence Beamline at Brazilian National Synchrotron Light Laboratory, in Campinas, S?o Paulo, Brazil, using a polychromatic beam for excitation. A small volume of 5 ml of beers containing an internal standard used to correct geometry effects was analyzed without pretreatment. The measuring time was 100 seconds and the detection limits obtained varied from 1 mg ^. l^-1 for Mn and Fe to 15 mg ^. l^-1 for P.     

Molecular Hybridization Strategy on the Design,Synthesis, and Structural Characterization of Ferrocene-N-acyl Hydrazones as Immunomodulatory Agents

Immunomodulatory agents are widely used for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases, but the range of side effects of the available drugs makes necessary the search for new immunomodulatory drugs. Here, we investigated the immunomodulatory activity of new ferrocenyl-N-acyl hydrazones derivatives (SintMed(141–156). The evaluated N-acyl hydrazones did not show cytotoxicity at the tested concentrations, presenting CC₅₀ values greater than 50 µM. In addition, all ferrocenyl-N-acyl hydrazones modulated nitrite production in immortalized macrophages, showing inhibition values between 14.4% and 74.2%. By presenting a better activity profile, the ferrocenyl-N-acyl hydrazones SintMed149 and SintMed150 also had their cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory effect evaluated in cultures of peritoneal macrophages. The molecules were not cytotoxic at any of the concentrations tested in peritoneal macrophages and were able to significantly reduce (p < 0.05) the production of nitrite, TNF-α, and IL-1β. Interestingly, both molecules significantly reduced the production of IL-2 and IFN-γ in cultured splenocytes activated with concanavalin A. Moreover, SintMed150 did not show signs of acute toxicity in animals treated with 50 or 100 mg/kg. Finally, we observed that ferrocenyl-N-acyl hydrazone SintMed150 at 100 mg/kg reduced the migration of neutrophils (44.6%) in an acute peritonitis model and increased animal survival by 20% in an LPS-induced endotoxic shock model. These findings suggest that such compounds have therapeutic potential to be used to treat diseases of inflammatory origin.
