The matched queueing network PH/M/c→oPH/PH/1

We consider a matched queueing network PH/M/coPH/PH/1, where the output of the first subsystem PH/M/c is regarded as one of the inputs of the second subsystem and matched with another input of PH-renewal process, and they are served by a single server with PH-service-distribution. The stationary state probabilities, the distribution of the virtual waiting times in the two subsystems, and the distribution of the total virtual waiting time are derived.The work was supported by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Germany, and the Chinese Academy ofSciences.     

Studies in the chemistry of erythrina alkaloide derivatives—II : Synthesis and stereochemistry of decahydro-3-methyl-6H-pyrido]2,1-i]indole

1,2,3,4,7,7a,8,9,10,11-Decahydro-3-methyl-6$\text{H}$-pyrido[2,1-i]indole was prepared as an example of an erythrinane derivative lacking the aromatic moiety. The stereochemical structure of this compound and its 6-oxo derivative were found to be predominantly cis A/B, trans B/C, axial CH₃ and cis A/B, axial CH₃, respectively.     

Examination of the different procedural steps in the determination of organotin compounds in water samples

Previous animal experiments suggested that the Magos cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopic (CVAAS) method might overestimate the concentrations of inorganic mercury (I-Hg) in the presence of methylmercury (MeHg). In the present study it is shown that this error is due to a fast degradation of MeHg during the formation of the analytical signal. For brain samples, about 5% of the total amount of MeHg in the reaction vessel is degraded to I-Hg. Speciation of Hg in aqueous solution of MeHg chloride, after purification with ionexchange chromatography using the Magos method, showed that about 9% was I-Hg. Analysis by NMR of MeHg chloride and MeHg hydroxide showed that less than 1% was in the form of I-Hg. The absolute magnitude of the error in the CVAAS method is dependent on the amounts of SnCl₂ and MeHg in the reaction vessel; however, the ratio of I-Hg to total (T-Hg) is shown to be independent of the amount of MeHg (25.5–255 ng as Hg) in the reaction vessel. A procedure for corrections is proposed, based on the results from these studies and empirical data from speciation analyses of brain tissue from MeHg-exposed rats and rabbits.     

Evidence for a monomeric structure of nonribosomal Peptide synthetases

Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) are multimodular biocatalysts that bacteria and fungi use to assemble many complex peptides with broad biological activities. The same modular enzymatic assembly line principles are found in fatty acid synthases (FAS), polyketide synthases (PKS), and most recently in hybrid NRPS/PKS multienzymes. FAS as well as PKS are known to function as homodimeric enzyme complexes, raising the question of whether NRPS may also act as homodimers. To test this hypothesis, biophysical methods (size exclusion chromatography, analytical equilibrium ultracentrifugation, and chemical crosslinking) and biochemical methods (two-affinity-tag-system and complementation studies with enzymes being inactivated in different catalytic domains) were applied to NRPS subunits from the gramicidin S (GrsA-ATE), tyrocidine (TycB(1)-CAT and TycB(2-3)-AT.CATE), and enterobactin (EntF-CATTe) biosynthetic systems. These methods had revealed the dimeric structure of FAS and PKS previously, but all three NRPS systems investigated are functionally active as monomers.     

Single-crystal structures of polyphenylene dendrimers

A series of first-generation polyphenylene dendrimers based on three different cores were prepared by Diels-Alder cycloaddition and their single-crystal structures were determined. Consisting exclusively of interlocked, twisted phenyl rings, these polyphenylene nanostructures have exciting structural and dynamic properties. Single crystals of dendrimers, suitable for X-ray structure analysis, were grown from different solvent mixtures by slow evaporation at room temperature. It should be pointed out that one of the described polyphenylene dendrimers represents up to now the biggest oligophenylene nanostructure from which crystallographic data is available.     

LC-electron capture-APCI(-)-MS determination of nitrobenzoxadiazole derivatives

Nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) derivatives are determined with limits of detection ranging down to 20 nmol l(-1) using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with electron capture (EC) ionisation. An atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) interface operated in the negative ion mode is used as ionisation source. Amine derivatives of 4-chloro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBDCl) as well as the isocyanate derivatives of 4-nitro-7-piperazino-2,1,3-nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBDPZ) have been analysed using this technique. The parameters favouring electron capture mechanisms have been investigated thoroughly under consideration of the competing mechanism of deprotonation to allow a better understanding of the electron capture process and to improve selectivity of the analysis.     

New approach to calibrating conductivity meters in the low conductivity range

There is currently a major issue with the calibration of conductivity meters used for high purity water: the lack of availability of a reference material or reference methods for low conductivity ranges (conductivity below 1 S cm^–1 at 25.0 °C, resistivity >1 M cm at 25.0 °C). This paper describes the current status of conductivity measurements in high purity water. A new and improved approach, currently being investigated, should allow us to make the calibration of conductivity meters used for low conductivity ranges traceable to the SI.Milipore, Milli-Q and Elix are registered trademarks of Millipore Corporation.     

Diagrammatic expansion of the long-range intermolecular potential and the total contribution of the first hyperpolarizability

The potential for pure dispersion forces can be defined in terms of a simple classical cluster expansion. The diagrams for the first hyperpolarizability contribution are summed for a one frequency model.     

Identification of the function of gene lndM2 encoding a bifunctional oxygenase-reductase involved in the biosynthesis of the antitumor antibiotic landomycin E by Streptomyces globisporus 1912 supports the originally assigned structure for landomycinone

The angucycline antibiotic family of the landomycins displays potent antitumor activity. To elucidate early post polyketide synthase (PKS) tailoring steps of the landomycin E biosynthetic pathway in Streptomyces globisporus 1912, the mutant S. globisporus M12 was prepared through gene replacement experiment of lndM2. It encodes an enzyme with putative oxygenase and reductase domains, according to sequencing of the gene and its counterpart lanM2 from S. cyanogenus S136 landomycin A biosynthetic gene cluster. The isolation of the novel shunt products 11-hydroxytetrangomycin and 4-hydroxytetrangomycin along with the well-known angucyclines tetrangomycin and tetrangulol from the culture of S. globisporus M12 provides evidence for the involvement of lndM2 in the early biosynthetic pathway of the landomycins, in particular in the formation of the alicyclic 6-hydroxy function of the landomycin aglycon. We therefore propose LndM2 to be responsible for both hydroxylation of the 6-position and its subsequent reduction. These reactions are necessary before the glycosylation reactions can occur. The results are in agreement with the originally published structure of landomycin but do not support the recently suggested revised structure.
