In this study, we used secondary electrospray ionization mass spectrometry assisted by an ion funnel (IF) operating at ambient pressure to find compounds in the mass range of 100–500 m/z in online breath fingerprinting experiments. In low‐resolution experiments conducted on an ion trap instrument, we found that pyridine is present in breath of individuals long after drinking coffee. In high‐resolution experiments conducted on a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance, we found more than 30 compounds in the mass range of 100–500 m/z in analogous online breath experiments. More than a third of these compounds have molecular weights above 200 Daltons and have not been mentioned in previous studies. In low‐resolution experiments as well as experiments without the IF, these compounds could not be detected. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Nickel(II) and palladium(II) complexes with α‐dioxime ligands dimethylglyoxime, diphenylglyoxime, and 1,2‐cyclohexanedionedioxime represent six new precatalysts for the polymerization of norbornene that can be activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), the organo‐Lewis acid tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)3], and triethylaluminum (TEA) AlEt3. The palladium but not the nickel precatalysts could also be activated by B(C6F5)3 alone, whereas two of the three nickel precatalysts but none of the palladium systems are somewhat active with only TEA as a cocatalyst. It was possible to achieve very high polymerization activities up to 3.2 · 107 gpolymer/molmetal · h. With the system B(C6F5)3/AlEt3, the activation process can be formulated as the following two‐step reaction: (1) B(C6F5)3 and TEA lead to an aryl/alkyl group exchange and result in the formation of Al(C6F5)nEt3?n and B(C6F5)3?nEtn; and (2) Al(C6F5)nEt3?n will then react with the precatalysts to form the active species for the polymerization of norbornene. Variation of the B:Al ratio shows that Al(C6F5)Et2 is sufficient for high activation. Gel permeation chromatography indicated that it was possible to control the molar mass of poly(norbornene)s by TEA or 1‐dodecene as chain‐transfer agents; the molar mass can be varied in the number‐average molecular weight range from 2 · 103 to 9 · 105 g · mol?1. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used for the characterization of a partially transesterified poly(beta-hydroxyalkanoate), PHA, polymer produced by the bacterial strain Alcaligenes eutrophus using saponified vegetable oils as the sole carbon sources. The transesterification was carried out separately under acidic and basic conditions to obtain PHA oligomers weighing less than 10 kDa. The intact oligomers were detected in their cationized [M + Na](+) and [M + K](+) forms by MALDI-TOFMS. A composition analysis, using the MALDI-TOF spectra, indicate that the oligomers obtained via acid catalysis were terminated with a methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate end group, and those obtained by base catalysis had a methyl crotonate (olefinic) termination. In addition to HB (hydroxy butyrate), the oligomers were found to contain a small percentage of HV (hydroxy valerate). This was independently confirmed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In comparison, the analysis of a commercial PHA polymer, transesterified under identical conditions, only showed the presence of HB, i.e. a pure PHB homopolymer. We examine the relative efficiencies of three- algorithms for performing Brownian Dynamics simulations without many-body hydrodynamics. We compare the conventional Brownian Dynamics algorithm of Ermak (CBD), Smart Monte Carlo (SMC) which incorporates Boltzmann sampling into essentially a CBD procedure, and the Stochastic Runge Kutta (SRK) method. We show, using the repulsive potential φ(r) = ε(σ/r) n , where n = 36 and 72, that the SRK algorithm gives the most accurate short-time dynamics for the mean-square displacements. The SRK algorithm static and dynamical properties converge better with a reducing time step to the exact values, than those generated by the CBD algorithm; giving efficiency gains typically of a factor of 3–4. Both CBD and SMC have the incorrect sign for the first correction term to the mean square displacement in a time step, whereas the SRK algorithm gives essentially the exact solution to order Δt 2, where Δt is the simulation time step. In fact, these correction terms are almost equal and opposite in sign. Expressions for these terms were derived in terms of the average interaction energy per particle. The force, shear and bulk stress autocorrelation functions were calculated. The average energy per particle and time correlation functions at short time have values in excess of the exact values, while the corresponding quantities for SRK are below this. This difference in behaviour can be traced back to the extent of compliance of the particle trajectories with the exact expansion of the Smoluchowski equation. The accuracy, at a given value of the time step, of the stochastic algorithms can significantly depend on the form of the interaction potential between particles. It is also demonstrated that the long time limits of various correlation functions are fairly insensitive to a particular scheme (SRK or CBD) used in the simulations. All the correlation functions have a stretched exponential region at intermediate to long times, and the values of the exponents on density and force law steepness have been determined.  相似文献

Microporous materials have a great importance in catalysis, delivery, storage and separation in terms of their performance and efficiency. Most microporous materials are comprised of inorganic frameworks, while thermally rearranged (TR) polymers are a microporous organic polymer which is tuned to optimize the cavity sizes and distribution for difficult separation applications. The sub-nano sized microcavities are controlled by in situ thermal treatment conditions which have been investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The size and relative number of cavities increased from room temperature to 230 °C resulting in improvements in both permeabilities and selectivities for H(2)/CO(2) separation due to the significant increase of gas diffusion and decrease of CO(2) solubility. The highest performance of the well-tuned TR-polymer membrane was 206 Barrer for H(2) permeability and 6.2 of H(2)/CO(2) selectivity, exceeding the polymeric upper bound for gas separation membranes.  相似文献

In this study, we use an ion funnel (IF) at ambient pressure to enhance the sensitivity of secondary electrospray ionization (SESI). Atenolol, salbutamol and cocaine as test compounds are delivered to the SESI interface in the gas phase and are charged with three nano electrosprays. In our experiments, we show that the compounds can be detected at concentrations in the low pptv range, which is an increase of two orders of magnitude compared with the results without the IF. With a standard SESI interface, the compounds could not be detected at all. With the use of the SESI IF interface for the headspace analysis of bananas and limes, we can detect many more compounds and at higher intensities than with a standard SESI interface.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated how binary mixtures of compounds influence each other's signal intensity in electrospray ionization (ESI), extractive electrospray ionization (EESI) and secondary electrospray ionization (SESI) experiments. The experiments were conducted using a series of homologous primary amines (from 1-butyl to 1- decylamine). In every experiment, two of the amines were present, and all 21 possible combinations were measured with EESI, ESI and SESI as ionization sources. Except for the volatility, which decreases with increasing molecular weight, the physico-chemical properties of the amines are very similar, so that the intensity ratio obtained in each experiment provides information about discrimination effects occurring during the ionization process. The results show that for the relatively volatile compounds investigated, the EESI ionization mechanism resembles the SESI-like gas-phase charge transfer more than ESI-like analyte ionization in solution. In addition, almost no discrimination effects were observed in the spectra obtained in EESI experiments. Quantitative EESI experiments with nonylamine as internal standard showed that EESI is capable of providing both more accurate and more precise results than SESI and ESI.  相似文献
