Structural and transport properties of Sn–Mg alloys

In this work, the structural and transport properties of Mg-doped Sn-based alloys have been investigated. The temperature-dependent transport and structural properties of Sn–Mg alloys were investigated for five different samples (Pure Sn, Sn-1.0 wt% Mg, Sn-2.0 wt% Mg, Sn-6.0 wt% Mg and Pure Mg). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis measurements were carried out in order to clarify the structural properties of the samples. It was found that the samples had tetragonal crystal symmetry, except for pure Mg which had hexagonal crystal symmetry. We also found that the cell parameters changed slightly with the addition of Mg element. The SEM micrographs of the samples showed that they had smooth surfaces with a clear grain boundary. The electrical and thermal conductivity of the samples were measured by four-point probe and the radial heat flow method, respectively. The electrical resistivity of the samples increased almost linearly with the increasing temperature. The thermal conductivity values ranged between 0.60 and 1.00 W/Km, while they decreased slightly with temperature and increased with Mg composition. The thermal conductivity values of the alloys were in between the values of pure Sn and Mg. The thermal conductivity results of the alloys were compared with other available results, and a good agreement was seen between the results. In addition, the temperature coefficients of electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity were determined; these were independent of the composition of the alloying elements.     

Toward reactant encapsulation for substrate-selectivity

A synthetic tris-(bis-(aminomethyl)pyridine) receptor was prepared in excellent yields via reversible imine condensation strategy. Catalytic activity in Henry reactions of the corresponding copper(II) complex was studied. Capitalizing on previous works by Anslyn with related receptors, the dramatic increase in basicity induced by this type of complex on diketo-derivatives was used to perform a nucleophilic addition of a deprotonated substrate onto an electrophile within the cavity. Hence, a Lewis acid stabilized nitronate was reacted with various aldehydes. A notable preference for small reactants easily accommodated in the cavity over encumbered ones was observed, thus representing an example of substrate-selectivity.     

Travelling wave mathematical analysis and efficient numerical resolution for a one-dimensional model of solid propellant combustion

We investigate a model of solid propellant combustion involving surface pyrolysis coupled to finite activation energy gas-phase combustion. Existence and uniqueness of a travelling wave solution are established by extending dynamical system tools classically used for premixed flames, dealing with the additional difficulty arising from the surface regression and pyrolysis. An efficient shooting method allows to solve the problem in phase space without resorting to space discretisation nor fixed-point Newton iterations. The results are compared to solutions from a CFD code developed at ONERA, assessing the efficiency and potential of the method, and the impact of the modelling assumptions is evaluated through parametric studies.     

Chalcogen Chiral Ylides for the Catalytic Asymmetric Epoxidation of Aldehydes: From Sulfur to Selenium and Tellurium

Abstract

The reaction of novel chiral selenonium and telluronium ylides was investigated with aldehydes and compared to the sulfur analogues. (2R,5R)-2,5-Dimethylselenolane was prepared and reacted as a catalyst for the benzylidenation of aldehydes. Disubstituted epoxides were readily prepared with a (surprising) absence of diastereoselectivity, and with enantiomeric excesses higher than 90%. The reaction of a tellurium analogue, (2S,5S)-2,5-diethyltellurolane, afforded the oxirane in very moderate yield and e.e.'s in the range of 62–82%. Though this was less productive, it is the first report of a chiral telluronium ylide leading to an asymmetric epoxidation of aldehydes.

The lithium enolate of (+)-camphor reacts with sulfur dioxide and 3-methyl-2-butenyl bromide to produce the β-keto-sulfone 3-(endo)-[3′-methyl-2′-butenyl-sulfonyl]-camphor 4.     

The cytotoxic activities of imidazole derivatives prepared from various guanylhydrazone and phenylglyoxal monohydrate

Abstract

A series of imidazole derivatives were synthesized from two-component condensation reaction of phenylgloxal monohydrate with guanylhydrazone. They were characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The in vitro anticancer evaluation of these compounds was done on human breast cancer (MCF-7) and human liver cancer (HepG2) cell lines using the MTT assay method. Most of the newly synthesized compounds displayed cytotoxic activity against these cancerous cells. In fact, compounds 3a, 3e, and 3?h exhibited more cytotoxic activities than the positive control drugs, fluro-5, and irinocam, against the MCF-7 cell line. Almost all the compounds, except for three, 3b, 3d, and 3f, gave more cytotoxic results than cisplatin. Therefore, these compounds could be considered for further development as anticancer drug candidates.     

From Pyranosuloses and Pyranosenuloses to Deoxy Hydroxyamino Sugars

Abstract

Deoxy hydroxyamino sugars represent a potentially useful series of sugar analogs owing mainly to the fact that they oxidize spontaneously to nitroxide free radicals to give spin-labeled sugar derivatives whose structure is very close to that of the parent sugar.₃ We describe herin two synthetic pathways towards these compounds, reduction of sugar oximes and conjugate addition to enolones derivatives, both in the pyranose series.
