The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) is a Pacific Northwest regional network that enables patients from community cancer centers to participate in multicenter oncology clinical trials where patients can receive some trial-related procedures at their local center. Results of positron emission tomography (PET) scans performed at community cancer centers are not currently used in SCCA Network trials since clinical trials customarily accept results from only trial-accredited PET imaging centers located at academic and large hospitals. Oncologists would prefer the option of using standard clinical PET scans from Network sites in multicenter clinical trials to increase accrual of patients for whom additional travel requirements for imaging are a barrier to recruitment. In an effort to increase accrual of rural and other underserved populations to Network trials, researchers and clinicians at the University of Washington, SCCA and its Network are assessing the feasibility of using PET scans from all Network sites in their oncology clinical trials. A feasibility study is required because the reproducibility of multicenter PET measurements ranges from approximately 3% to 40% at national academic centers. Early experiences from both national and local PET phantom imaging trials are discussed, and next steps are proposed for including patient PET scans from the emerging regional quantitative imaging network in clinical trials. There are feasible methods to determine and characterize PET quantitation errors and improve data quality by either prospective scanner calibration or retrospective post hoc corrections. These methods should be developed and implemented in multicenter clinical trials employing quantitative PET imaging of patients.  相似文献

The debate in the philosophy of perception between direct realists and representationalists should influence the debate in epistemology between internalists and externalists about justification. If direct realists are correct, there are more consciously accessible justifiers for internalists to exploit than externalists think. Internalists can retain their distinctive internalist identity while accepting this widened conception of internalistic justification: even if they welcome the possibility of cognitive access to external facts, their position is still quite distinct from the typical externalist position. To demonstrate this, Alvin Goldman??s critique of internalism is shown to ignore important lessons from the case for direct realism about perception. In particular, it unjustifiably assumes that internalism entails that only facts simultaneous with the justification of a belief can justify the belief. Goldman??s definition of a ??justifier?? is also inconsistent with the overall guidance conception of epistemology he takes for granted in his critique of internalism.  相似文献

Synchrotron FTIR microscopy has been used to probe the structure of model boundary lubricant layers confined at the solid-solid interface. The combination of high brightness of the IR source and a novel contact geometry that uses a hemispherical internal reflection element as the means for light delivery has enabled the detection of <2.5 nm thin monolayer lubricant layers in the solid-solid contact, in addition to allowing for spectral acquisition from specific regions of the contact. Spectra of hydration water from within a confined polyelectrolyte multilayer film have also been acquired, highlighting the altered hydrogen bonding environment within the polymer layer.  相似文献

We present a large range of experimental data concerning the influence of surfactants on the well-known Landau-Levich-Derjaguin experiment where a liquid film is generated by pulling a plate out of a bath. The thickness h of the film was measured as a function of the pulling velocity V for different kinds of surfactants (C(12)E(6), which is a nonionic surfactant, and DeTAB and DTAB, which are ionic) and at various concentrations near and above the critical micellar concentration (cmc). We report the thickening factor α = h/h(LLD), where h(LLD) is the film thickness obtained without a surfactant effect, i.e., as for a pure fluid but with the same viscosity and surface tension as the surfactant solution, over a wide range of capillary numbers (Ca = ηV/γ, with η being the surfactant solution viscosity and γ its surface tension) and identify three regimes: (i) at small Ca α is large due to confinement and surface elasticity (or Marangoni) effects, (ii) for increasing Ca there is an intermediate regime where α decreases as Ca increases, and (iii) at larger (but still small) Ca α is slightly higher than unity due to surface viscosity effects. In the case of nonionic surfactants, the second regime begins at a fixed Ca, independent of the surfactant concentration, while for ionic surfactants the transition depends on the concentration, which we suggest is probably due to the existence of an electrostatic barrier to surface adsorption. Control of the physical chemistry at the interface allowed us to elucidate the nature of the three regimes in terms of surface rheological properties.  相似文献

Molecular photocatalysts allow for selectively tuning their function on a molecular level based on an in-depth understanding of their chemical and photophysical properties. This contribution reports the synthesis and photophysical characterization of the novel molecular photocatalyst [(tbbpy)2Ru(tpac)PdCl2]2+RutpacPd (with tpac = tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c:3″,2″-h:2?,3?-j]acridine) and its mononuclear building block. Furthermore, detailed photocatalytic activity measurements of RutpacPd are presented. The introduction of the tpac-ligand into the molecular framework offers a potential route to reduce the impact of water as compared to the well-studied class of RutpphzPd (with tpphz = tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c:3″,2″-h:2?,3?-j]phenazine) complexes. The distinct impact of water on the electron-transfer processes in tpphz-ligands stems from the possibility of water to form hydrogen bonds to the phenazine nitrogen atoms and will potentially reduced when replacing the phenazine by the acridine unit. The effect of this structural variation on the catalytic properties and the underlying ultrafast intramolecular charge transfer behavior will be discussed in detail.  相似文献

Dissimilatory sulphate reduction (DSR) leads to an overprint of the oxygen isotope composition of sulphate by the oxygen isotope composition of water. This overprint is assumed to occur via cell-internally formed sulphuroxy intermediates in the sulphate reduction pathway. Unlike sulphate, the sulphuroxy intermediates can readily exchange oxygen isotopes with water. Subsequent to the oxygen isotope exchange, these intermediates, e.g. sulphite, are re-oxidised by reversible enzymatic reactions to sulphate, thereby incorporating the oxygen used for the re-oxidation of the sulphur intermediates. Consequently, the rate and expression of DSR-mediated oxygen isotope exchange between sulphate and water depend not only on the oxygen isotope exchange between sulphuroxy intermediates and water, but also on cell-internal forward and backward reactions. The latter are the very same processes that control the extent of sulphur isotope fractionation expressed by DSR. Recently, the measurement of multiple sulphur isotope fractionation has successfully been applied to obtain information on the reversibility of individual enzymatically catalysed steps in DSR. Similarly, the oxygen isotope signature of sulphate has the potential to reveal complementary information on the reversibility of DSR. The aim of this work is to assess this potential. We derived a mathematical model that links sulphur and oxygen isotope effects by DSR, assuming that oxygen isotope effects observed in the oxygen isotopic composition of ambient sulphate are controlled by the oxygen isotope exchange between sulphite and water and the successive cell-internal oxidation of sulphite back to sulphate. Our model predicts rapid DSR-mediated oxygen isotope exchange for cases where the sulphur isotope fractionation is large and slow exchange for cases where the sulphur isotope fractionation is small. Our model also demonstrates that different DSR-mediated oxygen isotope equilibrium values are observed, depending on the importance of oxygen isotope exchange between sulphite and water relative to the re-oxidation of sulphite. Comparison of model results to experimental data further leads to the conclusion that sulphur isotope fractionation in the reduction of sulphite to sulphide is not a single-step process.  相似文献

We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone. Through a characterization of both slab and cylindrical metamaterial-dielectric guides, we find that the surface modes of the cylindrical guides show promise as candidates for all-optical control of low-intensity pulses.  相似文献

This paper builds up a pattern recognition system to detect anomalies in JPEG images, especially steganographic content. The system consists of feature generation, feature ranking and selection, feature extraction, and pattern classification. These processes tend to capture image characteristics, reduce the problem dimensionality, eliminate the noise inferences between features, and further improve classification accuracies on clean and steganography JPEG images. Based on the discussion and analysis of six popular JPEG steganography methods, the entire recognition system results in higher classification accuracies between clean and steganography classes compared to merely using individual feature subset for JPEG steganography detection. The strength of feature combination and preprocessing has been integrated even when a small amount of information is embedded. The work demonstrated in this paper is extensible and can be improved by integrating various new and current techniques.  相似文献
