Self-trapping of a dipole coupled to a lattice: Application of a new theoretical method to an old problem

The static and dynamic properties of a spin-1/2 dipole with a transverse coupling to phonons are calculated using a generalization of a perturbation theory developed originally by Keiter, Kimball, Grewe, and Kuramoto for intermediate valence systems.     

Quantification of total petrol hydrocarbons (TPH) in soil by IR-spectrometry and gas chromatography – conclusions from three proficiency testing rounds

Due to the utilisation of 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFE) as extraction solvent the IR-spectrometric determination of total petrol hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil according to ISO/TR 11046 has been replaced by gas chromatography/flame ionisation detection (GC/FID) after extraction with a halogen-free solvent according to ISO/DIS 16703:2001. The results obtained with both methods by field laboratories in three proficiency testing (PT) rounds are compared. The consensus means obtained with GC/FID are typically 10%–20% (ranging between 0% and 25%) higher than those found with IR-spectroscopy. On the contrary, coefficients of variation (CV) are roughly double in case of GC/FID and are briefly discussed against the background of the Horwitz equation. Electromagnetic decay strengths in the isobars89Nb,89Mo and89Tc

Lifetimes of high spin states in the threeA=89 isobars⁸⁹Nb,⁸⁹Mo and⁸⁹Tc have been measured via the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique and the fusion evaporation reactions⁵⁸Ni(³⁵Cl,xnypzα) at 120 MeV beam energy. Reduced transition probabilities for about 50γ transitions were extracted. The experimental branching ratios in⁸⁹Mo and reduced transition probabilities in all three isobars are compared with the predictions of the spherical shell model based on the restrictedπ(p _1/2),π(g _9/2), ν(p_1/2),ν(g _9/2) configuration space with two different types of residual interaction.     

Simultaneous single-shot imaging of OH and O2 using a two-wavelength excimer laser

A technique is described for simultaneous single-shot imaging of OH and O₂. Laser-induced fluorescence of both molecules is excited by a tunable KrF laser, which is operated simultaneously on two wavelengths. By using two CCD detectors with image intensifiers and suitable filters, separate images of OH and O₂ distributions in H₂/O₂ and hydrocarbon/air flames were obtained.
