Silane coupling agents are commonly applied to glass fibers to promote fiber/resin adhesion and enhance durability in composite parts. In this study, a coupling agent multilayer on glass was doped with trace levels of the dimethylaminonitrostilbene (DMANS) fluorophore. The fluorophore was immobilized on the glass surface by tethering the molecule to a triethoxy silane coupling agent, creating the DMANS/silane coupling agent molecule (DMSCA). DMSCA was then diluted with commonly used coupling agents and grafted to a glass microscope coverslip to create a model composite interface. A 53-nm blue shift in fluorescence from the immobilized DMSCA can be followed during cure of an epoxy resin overlayer, giving this technique potential to monitor the properties of the fiber/resin interface during composite processing. Contact angle measurements on these coupling agent layers were similar in the presence or absence of the DMSCA molecule, suggesting that trace levels of the fluorescent probe did not affect the structure of the layer. The immobilized DMSCA molecule behaved similarly to the DMANS precursor in solution. Both showed longer wavelength fluorescence in more polar environments. Copyright 2000 Academic Press. 相似文献

The behavior of (Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitrile (1) as a chiral dienophile has been evaluated from its reactions with furan and acyclic dienes. Electrostatic interactions of the cyano group with the sulfinyl one restrict the conformational mobility around the C-S bond, thus controlling the pi-facial selectivity, which is almost complete in all cases, the approach of the diene from the less-hindered face of the dienophile (that bearing the lone electron pair) in the predominant rotamer being the favored one. The regioselectivity is also completely controlled by the cyano group. Additionally, the reactivity of compound 1 as well as its endo-selectivity are both higher than those observed for the corresponding (Z)-3-sulfinylacrylates, thus proving the potential of sulfinylnitriles as chiral dienophiles. 相似文献

Homogenization of hexadecane in water at pH 9 gives the same surface charge density in the presence of 0.2 mM thiocyanate or acetate anions as in the presence of chloride, indicating that these dipolar anions are not preferentially adsorbed at the oil/water interface. The decrease in the zeta potential of the emulsion droplets as the sodium salts of iodate, thiocyanate, or acetate are added from 0.1 to 10 mM is the same as that when sodium chloride is added, leading to the same conclusion. Increasing the sodium hydroxide concentration from pH 9 to 11.5 has a different effect on the zeta potential, consistent with the specific adsorption of hydroxide ion at the oil/water interface. 相似文献

Fluorine at 1–5 torr pressure was dissociated with a microwave discharge and passed over samples of UO2 or U3O8. The only reaction products were UF6 and O2. The reaction rates were independent of particle size and sample depth, but depended upon the geometric surface of the sample. Kinetic studies were interpreted to show that F-atoms react immediately upon contact with the surface, and that both F2-molecules and F-atoms react with the sample. When the ratio, F/F2, is relatively low, the partial pressure of F-atoms is rate determining. An efficient biological route to production of gold nanoparticles which allows the nanoparticles to be easily recovered remains
elusive. Live cells of the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris were incubated with a solution of gold chloride and harvested by centrifugation. Nanoparticles inside intact cells were identified
by transmission electron microscopy and confirmed to be metallic gold by synchrotron based X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray
absorption spectroscopy. These intracellular gold nanoparticles were 40–60 nm in diameter. At a concentration of 1.4% Au in
the alga, a better than 97% recovery of the gold from solution was achieved. A maximum of 4.2% Au in the alga was obtained.
Exposure of C. vulgaris to solutions containing dissolved salts of palladium, ruthenium, and rhodium also resulted in the production of the corresponding
nanoparticles within the cells. These were surmised to be also metallic, but were produced at a much lower intracellular concentration
than achieved with gold. Iridium was apparently toxic to the alga. No nanoparticles were observed using platinum solutions.

The importance of buried interfaces in our everyday lives and in current scientific research is highlighted, along with experimental difficulty associated with studying such systems. We present an overview of the application of second harmonic generation and sum-frequency spectroscopy to the study of buried interfaces. Several examples from the current literature are presented, ranging from chemical and biological, to electrical and magnetic interfaces. The importance of this work in the context of ongoing research in these areas is discussed. Finally, we provide a snapshot of the state of the art in non-linear optical spectroscopy by mentioning several new directions that are likely to have a large impact on future research into the physics and chemistry of buried interfaces. 相似文献
