The use of combined LC-GC for the analysis of fuel products: A review

A review of the analysis of petroleum fuels, oils, tars and engine exhaust particulate extracts by on-line coupled LC-GC is presented.     

Applications of coupled LC-GC: A review

Although coupled liquid chromatographygas chromatography (LC-GC) was first demonstrated ten years ago, only in the last few years has there been a sudden surge of interest in the technique. Approximately 70% of the total number of LC-GC applications have been published in the last two years (1987–88) alone. This review categorizes LC-GC publications into four main application areas: fossil fuels, foods, environmental samples, biologiical/pharmaceutical samples, and miscellaneous samples. Multidimensional separations carried out using other coupled-column chromatographic techniques (such as supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with GC, and on-line trace enrichment-GC) have also been included in this review.     

Use of xenon as a mobile phase for on–line capillary supercritical fluid chromatography–fourier transform infrared spectrometry

Xenon is investigated as a mobile phase for on-line capillary supercritical fluid chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (SFC-FTIR). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic isocyanates, and epoxy acrylate oligomers are analyzed as examples to show that xenon has similar selectivities and solvating powe to CO₂. Its optical transparency makes it ideal for IR detection. A stop flow system is constructed to increase the sensitivity of spectra measured from compounds which are weak IR absorbers.     

Rapid analysis of polyolefin antioxidants and light stabilisers by supercritical fluid chromatography

Nineteen commercial antioxidants and light stabilisers, with a wide range of relative molecular masses and boiling-points, present in polyolefins were analysed by packed column supercritical fluid chromatography on four different phases with CO2 or 10% MeOH-CO2 as the mobile phase and with UV detection. The technique is shown to yield short analysis times and sufficient resolution for a number of additives present in a given polyolefin.     

Nuclear magnetic resonance and the conformation of some derivatives of Michler's ketone

¹H NMR spectra are reported for Michler's ketone and twenty of its derivatives, along with ¹³C chemical shifts for five of the compounds. ¹H chemical shifts show only small changes with increasing substitution at the sterically hindered 2-position. Estimates of the dihedral angle between the benzene ring and C? CO? C planes have been obtained from the chemical shifts of C?O and 4-C for ketones 1, 3, 5, 15 and 16 . These angles are both internally consistent and very similar to dihedral angles determined by other methods for corresponding compounds in the benzophenone series.     

Nematic Thiophenes for STN-LCDS and Flexoelectric LCDS

Abstract

We report anew class of liquid crystals incorporating a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring and one or two conjugated trans-carbon-carbon double bonds in the terminal chain for use as components of nematic mixtures for TN-LCDs and STN-LCDs. The combination of these molecular elements contribute towards generating a high birefringence, a high nematic clearing point as well as a low viscosity for these materials. Several of these compounds exhibit a melting point below room temperature. This is the first time a room temperature nematic phase has been reported for phenyl thiophene derivatives. The new thiophene compounds can be used to induce a high birefringence in nematic mixtures for LCDs with short response times.
