Deconvolution of very low primary energy SIMS depth profiles

In this paper, the deconvolution of SIMS profiles analysed at very low primary energy (0.5 keV/O₂⁺) is addressed. The depth resolution function (DRF) of the SIMS analysis in presence of roughness is established and a deconvolution procedure is implemented without or in presence of roughness on samples containing delta-doped layers of boron in silicon. It is shown that the deconvolution procedure can lead to a great improvement of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the measured peaks in the case where no roughness in detected in the crater bottom. In the case where it is present, the conditions required to use a deconvolution procedure are discussed, and the deconvolution is implemented using precise and restrictive assumptions.     

Au-analyte adducts resulting from single massive gold cluster impacts

Utilizing Au₄₀₀⁴⁺ primary ions produces large molecular ion yields, some in excess of unity, with minimal surface damage. A surprising observation is the occurrence of Au-analyte adducts as part of the ejecta desorbed by a single Au-cluster impact. We present data that demonstrate that Au and Au-adducts as secondary ions (e.g., AuCN⁻, AuGly⁻ and AuCsI⁻) are the result of the interaction between a single primary ion, Au₄₀₀⁴⁺ and the target atoms.     

Mode beating in spot-size converter lasers

An anomalous modulation in the wavelength spectrum has been observed in lasers with spot-size converters. This intensity modulation is shown to be caused by beating between the fundamental lasing mode and radiation modes in the taper. This results in a periodic modulation in the net gain spectrum, which causes wavelength jumps between adjacent net gain maxima, and a drive current dependent spectral width that is expected to affect system performance. The amplitude of this spectral modulation is reduced significantly by either using an angled rear-facet which reflects the beating radiation modes away from the laser axis, or by using a nonlinear, adiabatic taper.     

Magnetic anisotropy of textured CrO2 thin films investigated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Highly a-axis-textured CrO₂ films have been deposited on Al₂O₃ (0001) substrates by chemical vapor deposition. CrO₂ has been found to have highly a-axis (010)-oriented columnar growth on a Cr₂O₃ (0001) initial layer. The six-fold surface symmetry of the Cr₂O₃ initial layer leads to three equivalent in-plane orientations of the a-axis-oriented CrO₂ unit cell. We report Cr L_2,3 X-ray magnetic circular dichroism data along the surface normal and at 60° off-normal sample orientation. For a 60° sample alignment, a strong increase of the projected orbital moment could be observed for unoccupied majority t_2g states using moment analysis. Therefore, the c axis is identified as the intrinsic magnetic easy axis of CrO₂. In addition, a small spin moment and a very strong magnetic dipole term T_z have been found. Q operators for the simple quantum relativistic Toda Chain

We investigate the simple quantum relativistic Toda chain. The ultralocal simple Weyl algebra pair is associated with each site of the chain. Weyl’s q is considered to be inside a unit circle. Both independent Baxter operators Q are constructed explicitly as series in local Weyl generators. The operator-valued Wronskian of Q-s is also calculated.     

Creation of a donor-acceptor pair for studying intraprotein electron transfer with the participation of amino-acid derivatives of fullerene C60

Efficient quenching of eosin phosphorescence by amino-acid derivatives of fullerene (AADFs) such as C₆₀-alanine and C₆₀-glycine in aqueous solutions indicates the possibility of transferring electrons from eosin to fullerene upon collisions or in the exciplex state. To investigate electron transfer in the protein structure, we studied the process of incorporation of C₆₀-alanine and C₆₀-glycine into the heme pocket of myoglobin by controlling Förster quenching. The dissociation constant for the protein-AADF complex was estimated.     

Numerical simulation of silane decomposition in an RF plasma

A model of silane decomposition in a radio-frequency argon plasma is constructed. The concentrations of SiH₄ decomposition products, as well as products of synthesis (higher silanes), are calculated. The role of metastable argon atoms in the formation of SiH₃ radicals and the higher silanes is analyzed.     

Individual and center-of-mass resonances in the motional spectrum of an electron cloud in a Penning trap

We have examined experimentally the motional spectrum of an electron cloud confined in a Penning trap. When the axial oscillation is excited by a radio frequency field the resonance exhibits a double structure. Both components depend differently on the number of trapped electrons and have different shape and width. We conclude that one of them corresponds to the excitation of the individual electrons while the other is the center-of-mass mode of the cloud. The threshold behaviour of the center-of-mass resonance suggests that it is a parametric instability of a Mathieu type equation of motion.
