An overview of the electrochemical reduction of oxygen at carbon-based modified electrodes

We present an overview of the electrochemical reduction of oxygen in water, focussing on carbon-based and modified carbon electrodes. This process is of importance for gas sensing, in fuel cells and in the electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide.     

Edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrodes in electroanalysis: an overview.

The recent development, behavior and scope of edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrodes in electroanalysis are overviewed. Similarities to, and advantages, over multi-walled CNT modified electrodes are noted and the wide scope of applications, ranging through gas sensing, stripping voltammetry and biosensing, illustrated.     

Thermotropic copolyesters. III. Synthesis and characterization of liquid crystal copolyesters containing the bicyclo[2.2.2]octane ring system

A number of thermotropic copolyesters which contain the bicylo[2.2.2]octane ring system have been synthesized. Because of the stiffening effect of the bicyclo[2.2.2]octane group on the chain, the sebacoyl spacer was used to obtain meltable compositions.     

On a family of Stokes flows

A family of simple Stokes flows involving sliding surfaces adjacent to surfaces at rest is considered. Principally, two specific flow configurations are investigated: (i) that arising when parts of the boundary of an infinitely long circular cylinder are rotating about the axis while other parts of the boundary are at rest, and (ii) the flow produced when a cap of a sphere is held at rest while the remainder of the sphere rotates about the symmetry axis. In each case computer plots of streamlines or constant velocity lines are presented to give a general impression of the resulting flow pattern.     

Deconfining and chiral phase transitions in quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature

We give further arguments to support the claim of Svetitsky and Yaffe that the finite-temperature transition in 4-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories is in the universality class of 3-dimensional Z_N spin models. We show that this implies a smoothing out of the transition when quarks are added to the system as long as N ≠ 3. For N = 3 the pure gauge transition is expected to be first order and will be smoothed by quarks only if the quark contribution to the internal energy is larger than the latent heat of transition.     

Thermal conversion of 2-methylphenylazo-compounds to diareno-1,2-diazepines

Examples are given of the synthesis of bis-annulated 1,2-diazepines $\text{via}$ thermal intramolecular condensation of 2-methylphenylazo-arenes and -heteroarenes carrying an $\text{ortho}$′ nucleofugal group.     

Canonical quantization of 1+1 dimensional gravity

Based on Polyakov's evaluation of the Fadeev-Popov determinant for (1+1)-dimensional gravity in the conformal gauge we formulate a canonical quantization in the synchronous gauge. We find that the system is describable as a quantum mechanical system of one degree of freedom. The quantization can be carried out and solved when any number of gauge fields are included. Scalar and spinor fields lead to new difficulties. For positive cosmological constant the geometry collapses as suggested by the classical system. For negative cosmological constant a more interesting behavior involving exponentially expanding and contracting universes occurs.Supported in part by NSF Grant No. PHy 78-26847.On leave from Tel Aviv University. Sputtered films of superconducting ternary molybdenum sulfides

The preparation of superconducting ternary molybdenum sulfide films of the formula M_xMo₃S₄, where M = Pb, Sn, Cu, and Ag, with the technique of RF sputtering from a composite target is described. The transition temperatures of these films are 13.3, 11.0, 10.7, and 8.8°K, respectively.
