N,N‐Diphenylbenzamide

In the title compound, C₁₉H₁₅NO, the neutral molecules are held together in the crystal structure by very weak C—H...O interactions, giving rise to a linear chain‐like structure. The structure of the molecule has been optimized using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6‐31G(d) level and this is compared with the molecular structure in the solid state. The two structures show significant differences in the relative orientations of the aromatic rings, which is interesting for further supramolecular study. Apart from the crystal structure analysis, powder X‐ray diffraction, UV–visible and thermogravimetric analyses of the compound have been carried out.     

Sequence sensitivity of breathing dynamics in heteropolymer DNA

We study the fluctuation dynamics of localized denaturation bubbles in heteropolymer DNA with a master equation and complementary stochastic simulation based on novel DNA stability data. A significant dependence of opening probability and waiting time between bubble events on the local DNA sequence is revealed and quantified for a biological sequence of the T7 bacteriophage. Quantitative agreement with data from fluorescence correlation spectroscopy is demonstrated.     

Nonlinear transport at low temperatures in peierls-distorted quasi one-dimensional conductors

The carrier mobility deduced from the experimental low-field conductivity σ and the carrier concentration (calculated from the known gap) is ～ 10⁴ cm²/Vsec in TTF-TCNQ (tetrathiafulvalene tetracyanoquinodimethane) and its Se analog TSeF-TCNQ. The observed low temperature increase in σ with field arises from heating of the carriers. This results in several nonlinear effects, e.g., increase in the mobility, surmounting of barriers (arising from charge density wave accommodation to defects) and creation of electron-hole pairs.

Simple model for transport phenomena: microscopic construction of Maxwell demonlike engine

We present a microscopic Hamiltonian framework to develop Maxwell demonlike engine. Our model consists of an equilibrium thermal bath and a nonequilibrium bath, latter generated by driving with an external stationary, Gaussian noise. The engine we develop can be considered as a device to extract work by modifying internal fluctuations. Our theoretical analysis focuses on finding the essential ingredients necessary for generating fluctuation induced transport under nonequilibrium condition. An important outcome of our model is that the net motion occurs when the nonlinear bath is modulated by the external noise, creating the nonzero effective temperature even when the temperature of both the baths are the same.     

Microwave‐induced perchloric acid catalyzed novel solvent‐free synthesis of 4‐aryl‐3,4‐dihydropyrimidones via biginelli condensation

We report here domestic microwave‐induced perchloric acid‐catalyzed solvent‐free synthesis of various 4‐aryl‐3,4‐dihydropyrimidones for the first time. In all the cases the yields are excellent and the mechanism follows a simple Biginelli condensation to produce the dihydropyrimidones in a few seconds. This procedure has been successfully employed to synthesize the mitotic kinesin EG5 inhibitor Monastrol (Figure I).
