Atmospheric electricity measurements in the upper air over Poona

Atmospheric electricity measurements made during the last decade at Poona using balloon-borne sondes are briefly reviewed. The vertical distribution of potential gradient in the free atmosphere follows theoretical values only during the monsoon months, when the air is comparatively free from dust. During the summer months, the potential gradient is constant above the exchange layer and this is associated with the presence of the deep, dense dust layer that lies over the region and extends to over 10 km. into the atmosphere. The increase with height of the potential gradient above the 10 km. level during winter is shown to be closely related to the presence of the subtropical jet stream, which presumably transports electric charges to the upper levels over Poona.

The cation complexation model performs better than the hydride model and is at par with the transition state model at the HF/6-31G* and B3LYP/6-31G* levels. Electrostatic effects that rely on the residual charges on C5 and C6 of the title substrate and that are believed to contribute to the overall performance of the hydride model also perform poorly.

We consider a group of automorphisms of a compact convex set X. Using simplical measure techniques we find a decomposition of points of X into “G-primary” points. The decomposition of Guichardet and Kastler for quasi-invariant states of a separable C¹- algebra is generalized.     

A single reagent radioimmunoassay for thyroxine in blood samples absorbed on filter paper for mass screening of neonatal hypothyroidism

A single reagent radioimmunoassay for thyroxine in blood samples absorbed on filter paper for the mass screening of neonatal hypothyroidism is described. Blood samples were collected by pricking the heel of newborn babies (3 days old) and pressing Whatman 3 filter paper against the wound. 6 mm diameter blood spots were punched out at the time of assay and incubated with 0.4 ml of a preincubated antigen-antibody complex for six hours at 37 °C. 1 ml of 22% polyethylene glycol is used for the precipitation of antigen-antibody complex. The assay has a sensitivity of 2.2 ng/ml. 500 samples collected from newborns were analyzed in the assay and gave a mean of 117.6±31.9 ng/ml.     

A one-pot access to pyridine/benzo fused cyclododecanes via multi-component tandem reactions

A facile syntheses of novel poly-substituted pyridine/benzo fused cyclododecane hybrid heterocycles have been achieved through one-pot multi-component tandem strategy employing cyclododecanone, aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile.     

A novel entry to xanthones by an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction involving 2-(1,2-dichlorovinyloxy) aryl dienones

A wide array of synthetic methods are described in the literature for the preparation of xanthones—a prominent class of tricyclic molecules that occur widely in nature. Majority of these reported methods involve linking the two aromatic rings and forming the central pyrone ring using a variety of classical and non-classical cyclization strategies. In a conceptually different approach, we describe here a new xanthone synthesis wherein both the pyrone and the second aromatic rings were forged in a single step by an intramolecular cycloaddition reaction involving 2-(1,2-dichlorovinyloxy) aryldienones.     

A scalable synthesis of a histamine H3 receptor antagonist

Starting from 1-methylimidazole, a concise, scalable, three-step synthesis of the title compound is described. The required 2-chloroimidazole was prepared in very good yield by halogen-metal exchange between the 2-lithio derivative and hexachloroethane.
