New approach for the clinical monitoring of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D3 and 25‐hydroxyvitamin D2 by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with MS/MS based on the standard reference material 972

Biomarkers, 25‐hydroxyvitamin D₃ and 25‐hydroxyvitamin D₂, are important indicators of the vitamin D general status and are monitored in several pathophysiological disorders, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, etc. A novel ultra‐HPLC with MS/MS methodology for the analysis of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D derivatives coupled with a very simple and highly rapid sample preparation step was developed. Analytical parameters obtained showed linearity (R²) above 0.999 for both vitamins with accuracies between 95.8 and 102%. The LODs were as low as 0.22 and 0.67 nmol/L for 25‐hydroxyvitamin D₃ and 25‐hydroxyvitamin D₂, respectively. Intra‐assay precision (%RSD) was lower than 4.5%, and inter‐assay precision (%RSD) was lower than 6.5%. The feasibility of the developed methodology to be applied in clinical routine analysis has been proved by its application in blood samples from non‐agenarian patients, patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and patients suffering from age‐related macular degeneration.     

Photoluminescent nematic liquid crystalline elastomer actuators

Nematic liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) actuators possessing both photoluminescent (PL) and stimuli-responsive functions were fabricated and studied. PL-dyes (1-pyrenemethyl acrylate and 4-bromo-2,6-bis-(1?-methyl-benzimidazolyl) pyridine loaded with Eu(III) ion) were synthesised and characterised, and then the dyes were mixed with an acrylate side-on liquid crystalline monomer, a cross-linker and a photo-initiator. Through magnetic field alignment, well-defined LCE micropillar PL actuators were fabricated from the mixed samples by a method combining soft lithography and photo-polymerisation/photo-cross-linking. Microscopic observations indicated that the LCE micropillars showed reversible thermomechanical deformation at the nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature. During the reversible contraction and extension process, the LCE actuator containing 1-pyrenemethyl moieties showed stable photoluminescence, while for the LCE actuator doped with 4-bromo-2,6-bis-(1-methyl-benzimidazolyl)pyridine/Eu(III) complex, the PL emission was quenched at about 100°C, which was before the pillars contraction occurring at a higher temperature. When cooled down to room temperature, the contracted LCE micropillars recovered their original shape and the initial PL emission state. The micron-sized LCE actuators can be used for thermomechanical devices and machines with different PL functions at the same time.     

Development of 90Y-DOTA-nimotuzumab Fab fragment for radioimmunotherapy

Concentration of activity of Cs-137 and its spatial distribution in soils and lichen Hypogymnia physodes were determined in the Gorce Mts. (several hundred km²) in S Poland. The authors distinguished two areas of the Gorce Mts. on the basis of markedly different Cs-137 depositions, whose respective average values are 4.4 and 9.9 kBq/m² as at 1st July 2005. The average Cs-137 activity concentration in the lichen H. physodes from the Gorce is 47 Bq/kg d.m. A significant local variability of quantities measured amounts to a few dozen percent was found.     

High yield syntheses of stable, singly bonded Pd2(6+) compounds

A general method for the syntheses of dipalladium compounds having a singly bonded Pd26+ core and the formula R,S-cis-Pd2(C6H4PPh2)2(O2CR)2Cl2 is described. When the alkyl group in the carboxylate ligands is an electron donating group, the compounds are stable and the yields high. The Pd-Pd distances for the diamagnetic compounds with R = CF3 and CMe3 are 2.5434(4) and 2.5241(9) A, respectively. Calculations at the DFT level suggest that the electronic configuration is sigma2pi4delta2delta*2pi*4. These represent rare examples of palladium(III) compounds.     

Highly stable Cp*-Ir(III) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands as C-H activation catalysts for the deuteration of organic molecules

The preparation of a series of complexes of the type CpIrX2(NHC) provides effective catalysts for the H/D exchange of a wide range of organic molecules in methanol-d4. The reaction proceeds with higher yields under milder reaction conditions than previous CpIr systems reported thus far. For comparative purposes, we also studied the catalytic activity of CpIrCl2(PMe3) under the same reaction conditions. The molecular structures of two of the new CpIr(NHC) complexes are described.     

Comparison of interactions between beta-hairpin decapeptides and SDS/DPC micelles from experimental and simulation data

Background  

We applied a combined experimental and computational approach to ascertain how peptides interact with host and microbial membrane surrogates, in order to validate simulation methodology we hope will enable the development of insights applicable to the design of novel antimicrobial peptides. We studied the interactions of two truncated versions of the potent, but cytotoxic, antimicrobial octadecapeptide protegrin-1, PC-72 [LCYCRRRFCVC] and PC-73 [CYCRRRFCVC].     

New Rh(I) and Rh(III) bisimidazol-2-ylidene complexes: synthesis,reactivity, and molecular structures

New chelate bis-heterocyclic-carbene complexes of Rh(I) and Rh(III) have been obtained and fully characterized. The molecular structures of the new species have been determined. The synthesis of the compounds starts from the bisimidazolium precursors, which are deprotonated with NEt(3) under mild reaction conditions, leading to coordination to the Rh complex. The Rh(III) compounds are generated from Rh(I) and [Rh(II)](2) species, although there is no apparent oxidizing agent in the reaction media.     

High 1,5-anti stereoinduction in boron-mediated aldol reactions of methyl ketones

[reaction: see text] We report herein a very efficient and synthetically useful 1,4-anti-1,5-anti boron-mediated aldol reaction of a chiral alpha-methyl-beta-alkoxy methyl ketone with achiral aldehydes.
