The axial and radial dimensions of a fiber are known to be key factors with respect to the mechanical stress necessary to promote failure, this being known as the size effect. Usually different methods are used to quantify the two types of size effects: Linear elastic fracture mechanics (lefm) and related schemes provide the theoretical basis for the effect of diameter variability upon strength whereas statistical theories, generally based upon the Weibull probability distribution combined with the weakest-link theorem, describe length effects. Here we show that simple modifications of the classical Poisson/Weibull form yield a new failure probability function which provides a more adequate explanation for diameter effects on strength in polydiacetylene fibers, and also resolves in a satisfactory way a current problematic issue inherent to the Weibull/weakest-link model. A maximum likelihood estimation procedure is presented for the evaluation of the most appropriate parameters of the proposed failure probability function. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with computational aspects of a multidimensional population balance model of a wet granulation process. Wet granulation is a manufacturing method to form composite particles, granules, from small particles and binders. A detailed numerical study of a stochastic particle algorithm for the solution of a five-dimensional population balance model for wet granulation is presented. Each particle consists of two types of solids (containing pores) and of external and internal liquid (located in the pores). Several transformations of particles are considered, including coalescence, compaction and breakage. A convergence study is performed with respect to the parameter that determines the number of numerical particles. Averaged properties of the system are computed. In addition, the ensemble is subdivided into practically relevant size classes and analysed with respect to the amount of mass and the particle porosity in each class. These results illustrate the importance of the multidimensional approach. Finally, the kinetic equation corresponding to the stochastic model is discussed. 相似文献

Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 - δ (BSCF) is a material with excellent oxygen ionic and electronic transport properties reported by many research groups. In its cubic phase, this mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) perovskite is a promising candidate for oxygen permeation membranes. For this application, its long-term stability under operating conditions (especially temperature and oxygen partial pressure) is of crucial importance.The present work is focused on the thermal stability of the BSCF cubic phase in the targeted temperature range for applications (700…900 °C) in light of previous studies in literature reporting a reversible transition to a hexagonal phase somewhere below 900 °C.To this end, single phase cubic BSCF powders were annealed at different temperatures over varying periods of time. Phase composition was subsequently analysed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) in order to determine both the temperature limit and the time-scale for the formation of the hexagonal phase. Additionally, the long-term behaviour of the electrical conductivity was examined on bulk samples at 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C over several hundreds of hours, showing a prolonged decrease at 800 °C. The decrease in electrical conductivity at this temperature was also examined on bulk samples with different grain sizes, showing a more pronounced decrease the smaller the average grain size.Coexistence of both phases (cubic and hexagonal) could also be shown for 700 °C, however with a different phase equilibrium than at 800 °C. 相似文献

Elastic light scattering is performed in the original band of optical fiber communication at 1300 nm for a 500 μm sapphire microsphere placed on a silica optical fiber half coupler. The morphology dependent resonances (MDRs) are observed in the transverse magnetically (TM) polarized and transverse electrically (TE) polarized 0° transmission and 90° elastic scattering obtained from the sapphire microsphere. The TE and TM MDRs can be detected selectively with the use of a Glan polarizer. The TE and TM polarization selectivity provides the ability to select relative MDR to BG levels. The TM polarization provides higher MDR signal to background ratio (SBR) and is suitable for optical monitoring, biological sensing or any other optoelectronic application that requires a high resolution optical filter. The polar angular mode spacing of 0.36 nm of the resonances correlates well with the optical size of the sapphire microsphere. The autocorrelation of the 90° elastic scattering spectra also shows peaks at 0.36 nm. The spectral linewidths of the resonances are on the order of 0.1 nm, which corresponds to quality factors on the order of 104. A sapphire sphere with a radius of 500 μm and relative refractive index of 1.31, resonances will red-shift by 1.01 nm (0.077%). This shift is on the order of 10 linewidths, making sapphire biophotonic sensors an interesting alternative to silica biophotonic sensors. 相似文献

The development of Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques (GEISA: Management and Study of Spectroscopic Information) was started over three decades at Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) in France. GEISA is a computer accessible spectroscopic database, designed to facilitate accurate forward radiative transfer calculations using a line-by-line and layer-by-layer approach. More than 350 users have been registered for on-line use of the GEISA facilities. The current 2003 edition of GEISA (GEISA-03) is a system comprising three independent sub-databases devoted respectively to: line transition parameters, infrared and ultraviolet/visible absorption cross-sections, microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols.Currently, GEISA is involved in activities related to the assessment of the capabilities of IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer on board of the METOP European satellite) through the GEISA/IASI database derived from GEISA.The GEISA-03 content is presented, placing emphasis on molecular species of interest for Earth and planetary atmosphere studies, with details on the updated 2008 archive underway. A critical assessment on the needs, in terms of molecular parameters archive, related with recent satellite astrophysical missions is made. The electrical and dielectric properties of mercuric iodide were studied at room temperature under various intensities and colours of light in the frequency range 1 Hz–10 kHz. In the high-frequency region (>40 Hz), the real part of the dielectric constant () is almost constant with frequency (f), colour and intensity of light. At lower frequencies, varies nearly as 1/f and monotonically increases with intensity (I) of the yellow (or green) light, whereas it is almost constant with red light intensity. This behaviour is discussed in the view of the different polarization contributions. The imaginary part of the dielectric constant () was found to vary as 1/f over the frequency range studied. This behaviour was observed whether the crystal was in dark or illuminated implying that the roomtemperature ac dark- or photo-conductivity () is independent of frequency. The diffusion of sulfur in nickel oxide single crystals has been investigated over the temperature range from 1000 to 1250°C. The measured data were found to deviate markedly from the error function complement dependence for diffusion from a constant source. The deviation is attributed to the migration of sulfur by the “double mode simultaneous diffusion mechanism.” The faster mode diffusion is suggested to be via nickel vacancies, and the slower mode diffusion is suggested to be via oxygen vacancies. The diffusivities for faster mode are given by Df = 2.94 exp[? 86.6 kcal/RT] cm2 sec?1 and, the slower mode, Ds = 1.08 × 10?9 exp [?32.8 kcal/RT]cm2sec?1. 相似文献
