On the conjugate boundary value problem

We study the conjugate boundary-value problem with boundary conditions whose orders can be as large as the order of the differential equation or larger. We construct the Green's function of the problem over the entire space when the separating surface is a hyperplane, and we describe its properties. Thickness and temperature dependence of subsidiary absorption thresholds in yttrium-iron-garnet thin films

The microwave subsidiary absorption threshold in tangentially magnetized yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) films was measured as a function of the static magnetic field, film thickness and decrease in the 0.3–3 μm range is observed. The effect is explained quantitatively by using modified Damon-Eshbach dispersion relations which take into account exchange interactions.

The effect of temperature on h_crit, the smallest threshold field amplitude, in the 250<T< 450 K temperature range can be expressed by an empirical relationship h_crit M_s(T)^-1.6 where M_s is the saturation magnetization. This h_crit vs M_s relationship is similar to that obtained for the magnetization dependence of parallel pump thresholds in Li-Ti ferrite compounds.     

Parasupersymmetric quantum mechanics of arbitrary order withN parasupercharges

Chemiluminescence upon isomerization of dimethyldioxirane in the gas phase and on a sorbent surface

Chemiluminescence (CL) was found upon the isomerization of dimethyldioxirane in the gas phase under argon atmosphere. The intensity of CL increases as temperature increases and decreases with time at constant temperature. If Silipor is placed in a cell containing the dimethyldioxirane vapor in argon, the intensity of CL sharply increases (more than 10 times) and then decreases following the exponential law. Rapid and reproducible capillary electrophoretic separation of double-stranded DNA fragments in a simple methyl cellulosic sieving system

Summary A rapid, robust and reproducible method providing excellent separation performance and simplicity using a 0.5% MC-4000 methyl cellulosic sieving medium in DB-1 coated capillaries has been developed. The method is suitable for qualitative comparison of DNA restriction profiles for fragments in the size range 100–1000 base pairs (bp). Efficiencies up to 8.5 million plates/m (1057 bp fragment) were recorded. Peak resolution of 6 bp (291/297 bp, 335/341 bp) and 4 bp (238/242 bp, 341/345 bp) was achieved. In addition, 1 bp partial resolution of 123/124 bp and 298/297 bp was obtained. Run-to-run (n=15), day-to-day (n=4), and capillary-to-capillary (n=3) variations of 0.1–0.2% RSD, 0.3–0.5% RSD, and 0.1–0.3% RSD, respectively, were observed. The MC-4000 sieving matrix was found to be better than hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl cellulose, in terms of both performance and stability in the DB-1 coated capillaries. The efficiency and resolution in DB-WAX capillaries were inferior to those obtained in DB-1 capillaries. The commercially available DB-1 capillaries were stable for months in the sieving medium at pH 8.3 and could be regenerated to provide high efficiency after accidental current breaks.     

Observation of ionic thermocurrents in zirconia-based solid electrolytes

In ionic conductors, long range-migrating charges are a main cause of polarization processes. This has complicated, up to date, the study of ionic thermocurrents (ITC) in solid electrolytes. However, the method is appealing, as it probes directly charge-formation phenomena that are important both from a scientific point of view and for applications. This work reports on the observation of ITC in solid electrolytes. Under appropriate experimental conditions, the ITC response of a zirconia sample electroded with platinum is a reproducible one, thus opening the way to a new characterization method that may complement other well established methods, such as Impedance Spectroscopy and a number of electrochemical techniques. The general trends of the response, which is composed of two well resolved ITC peaks, is discussed. One of them, taking place at higher temperatures, conforms to the standard shape of a first order kinetics depolarization process. Inclusive production of neutral vector mesons in hadronic Z decays

A data sample of about 3.0 million hadronicZ decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP in the years 1991 through 1994 is used to make an inclusive selection of B hadron events. In this event sample 4227±140±252B* mesons in the decayB*→Bγ and 1944±108±161B** _u,d mesons decaying into a B meson and a charged pion are reconstructed. Here and in the followingB** _u,d denotes the eightL=1(bū) and (bd) states and their charge conjugate. For the well establishedB* meson the following quantities are obtained:ΔM=M _B*−M_B=(45.30±0.35±0.87) MeV/c² andN _B*/(N _B+N _B*)=(77.1±2.6±7.0)%. The angular distribution of the photons in theB* rest frame is used to measure the relative contribution of longitudinalB* polarization states to beσ _L/(σ _L+σ _T)=(33±6±5)%.     

A PULSED LASER AND PULSE RADIOLYSIS STUDY OF AMPHIPHILIC CHLOROPHYLL DERIVATIVES WITH PDT ACTIVITY TOWARD MALIGNANT MELANOMA

Two amphiphilic derivatives of chlorophyll, which have high potential as photodynamic therapy sensitizers for malignant melanoma have been investigated by a combination of laser flash photolysis and pulse radiolysis. It is shown that direct excitation of monomeric forms of these molecules in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments produces significant yields of the corresponding triplet states, which have been characterized in terms of spectral and kinetic parameters. In both environments, scavenging of the triplets by oxygen produces singlet oxygen, O₂(^lΔ₈), with essentially unit efficiency as evidenced by time-resolved IR luminescence measurements.
