The mineralization of CO32− ions on chitin- or chitosan- metal composite beads in water

The following dry composite beads (diameter 1.0-1-2 mm) were prepared: chitin-CaCO₃, chitosan-CaCl₂. chitosan-CuCl₂, partially N-acetylated chitosan-CuCl₂, chitosan-CuSO₄, chitosan-Fe₃O₄, chitin-SiO₂. Each of chitosan-CuCl₂, chitosan-CuSO₄ and chitin-CaCl₂ composite beads was treated in aqueous K₂CO₃ at room temperature to afford a mixture of metal carbonates and hydroxides on chitin or chitosan chain.     

Rhodium-catalyzed allyl transfer from homoallyl alcohols to aldehydes via retro-allylation followed by isomerization into ketones

Retro-allylation of homoallyl alcohol by rhodium catalysis occurs to generate allylrhodium species. This allylrhodium reacts with aldehydes to give the corresponding secondary alcohols in situ. Isomerization of these alcohols proceeds in the same pots to furnish the corresponding saturated ketones in good yields. [reaction: see text]     

Synthesis of N-azolylindoles by copper-catalyzed C-H/N-H coupling-annulation sequence of o-alkynylanilines

A wide range of o-alkynylanilines undergo a copper-catalyzed direct C-H/N-H coupling with azoles followed by benzannulation to form the corresponding N-azolylindoles in good yields. The domino reaction proceeds effectively with molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant and provides a new dehydrogenative access to the titled compounds of interest in pharmaceutical and material sciences.     

Synthesis and properties of bis(pyrazino[2′,3′:4,5]imidazole)-fused 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-1,4,5,8,9,10-hexaazaanthracenes: a new fluorescent nitrogen-rich heterocycle

Nitrogen-rich heterocycles, bis(pyrazino[2′,3′:4,5]imidazole)-fused 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-1,4,5,8,9,10-hexaazaanthracenes (BPI-HAAs) were prepared by conventional Pd(OAc)₂/BINAP-catalyzed C-N coupling reactions of 5-aryl-3-bromoaminopyrazines. The BPI-HAA core is a planar structure with aromaticity, and this heterocycle exhibits red fluorescence and moderate electron-accepting characteristics.     

Molecular interactions between lipid bilayers and a water-soluble polymer

Molecular interactions between lipid bilayers (liposomes) and chondroitin sulfate C (CS), a water soluble polymer, have been investigated in terms of zeta-potential, particle size, microscopic-viscosity, microscopic-polarity of liposomes and permeability of calcein. Microscopic morphology is dramatically changed by the addition of CS to the positively charged liposomes (Pos.L), while it is not changed by the addition to uncharged liposomes (Unc.L) or negatively charged liposomes (Neg.L). The absolute value of the particle size of Pos.L increases with the addition of CS, while the zeta- potential of Pos.L decreases. Permeability of Pos.L decreases with an increase in the concentration of CS. Phase transition temperature of Pos.L is changed after the addition of CS. These values, however, are not changed for the other liposomes by the addition of CS. The results of gel filtration chromatography show that CS is absorbed on the Pos.L surface. Microscopic viscosity is also increased by the addition of CS to Pos.L due to the adsorption of CS.     

Electrophoretic analysis of phosphorylation of the yeast 20S proteasome

The 26S proteasome complex, consisting of two multisubunit complexes, a 20S proteasome and a pair of 19S regulatory particles, plays a major role in the nonlysosomal degradation of intracellular proteins. The 20S proteasome was purified from yeast and separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). A total of 18 spots separated by 2-DE were identified as the 20S proteasome subunits by peptide mass fingerprinting with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The alpha2-, alpha4- and alpha7-subunits gave multiple spots, which converged into one spot for each subunit when treated with alkaline phosphatase. The difference of pI between phosphorylated and dephosphorylated spots and their reaction against anti-phosphotyrosine antibody suggested that the alpha2- and alpha4-subunits are phosphorylated either at Ser or at Thr residue, and the alpha7-subunit is phosphorylated at Tyr residue(s). These phosphorylated subunits were analyzed by electrospray ionization-quadrupole time of flight-tandem MS (ESI-QTOF-MS/MS) to deduce the phosphorylation sites. The 20S proteasome has three different protease activities: chymotrypsin-like, trypsin-like and peptidylglutamyl peptide-hydrolyzing activities. The phosphatase treatment increased K(m) value for chymotrypsin-like activity of the 20S proteasome, indicating that phosphorylation may play an important role in regulating the proteasome activity.     

The Renner effect in triatomic molecules with application to CH+, MgNC and NH2

We have developed a computational procedure, based on the variational method, for the calculation of the rovibronic energies of a triatomic molecule in an electronic state that become degenerate at the linear nuclear configuration. In such an electronic state the coupling caused by the electronic orbital angular momentum is very significant and it is called the Renner effect. We include it, and the effect of spin-orbit coupling, in our program. We have developed the procedure to the point where spectral line intensities can be calculated so that absorption and emission spectra can be simulated. In order to gain insight into the nature of the eigenfunctions, we have introduced and calculated the overall bending probability density function f(p) of the states. By projecting the eigenfunctions onto the Born-Oppenheimer basis, we have determined the probability density functions f+(rho) and f-(rho) associated with the individual Born-Oppenheimer states phi(-)elec and phi(+)elec. At a given temperature the Boltzmann averaged value of the f(p) over all the eigenstates gives the bending probability distribution function F(rho), and this can be related to the result of a Coulomb Explosion Imaging (CEI) experiment. We review our work and apply it to the molecules CH2+, MgNC and NH2, all of which are of astrophysical interest.     

Subincanadines A-C,novel quaternary indole alkaloids from Aspidosperma subincanum

Three novel quaternary indole alkaloids with an unprecedented 1-azoniatricyclo[4.3.3.0(1,5)]undecane moiety, subincanadines A-C (1-3), as well as two new indole alkaloids with a 1-azabicyclo[5.2.2]undecane moiety, subincanadines D (4) and E (5), and a new indole alkaloid with a 1-azabicyclo[4.3.1]decane moiety, subincanadine F (6), have been isolated from the barks of Aspidosperma subincanum Mart, and the structures of 1-6 and the stereochemistry of 1-3 were elucidated by spectroscopic data and chemical means.     

In Situ Processing of Nano Crystalline Oxide Particles/Polymer Hybrid

Nano sized crystalline particles/polymer hybrids were synthesized form designed metal-organic precursors. The newly developed method is composed of the synthesis of organic matrix by polymerization and the in situ nucleation and growth of crystalline oxide particles in the organic matrix below 100°C. The design of metal-organic precursor modified with polymerizable ligand and the selection of reaction conditions does influence the size and crystallinity of ceramic particles in organic matrix. The nano-sized magnetic particle/polymer hybrid exhibits the interesting feature of superparamagnetism and quantum size effect. The crystalline particles of BaTiO₃/, PbTiO₃/, and KNbO₃/polymer hybrids behave to be dielectric and show the typical electro-rheological behavior.
