First total synthesis of cichorine and zinnimidine

The first total synthesis of the phytotoxins cichorine and zinnimidine is described. The synthetic tactics involve the sequential connection of the dense and diverse functionalities on the aromatic nucleus followed by a Parham cyclization process, giving rise to the lactam unit embedded in the title compound framework.     

Highly enantioselective syntheses of heterocycles via intramolecular Ir-catalyzed allylic amination and etherification

[reaction: see text] Enantioselective Ir-catalyzed intramolecular allylic aminations and etherifications are described. Up to 97% ee was achieved using catalysts prepared by in situ activation of mixtures of phosphorus amidites and [Ir(COD)Cl]2. Sequential aminations of bis-allylic carbonates, involving an inter- followed by an intramolecular reaction, gave trans-N-benzyl-2,5-divinylpyrrolidine and trans-N-benzyl-2,6-divinylpiperidine with > or = 99% ee. New phosphorus amidites as well as improved conditions for intermolecular aminations are reported.     

Origin of the asymmetric magnetization reversal behavior in exchange-biased systems: competing anisotropies

The magnetization reversal in exchange-biased ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (FM-AFM) bilayers is investigated. Different reversal pathways on each branch of the hysteresis loop, i.e., asymmetry, are obtained both experimentally and theoretically when the magnetic field is applied at certain angles from the anisotropy direction. The range of angles and the magnitude of this asymmetry are determined by the ratio between the FM anisotropy and the interfacial FM-AFM exchange anisotropy. The occurrence of asymmetry is linked with the appearance of irreversibility, i.e., finite coercivity, as well as with the maximum of exchange bias, increasing for larger anisotropy ratios. Our results indicate that asymmetric hysteresis loops are intrinsic to exchange-biased systems and the competition between anisotropies determines the asymmetric behavior of the magnetization reversal.     

Exponential decay lifetimes of excitons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes

The dynamics of excitons in individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes was studied using time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL decay from tubes of the same (n,m) type was found to be monoexponential, however, with lifetimes varying between less than 20 and 200 ps from tube to tube. Competition of nonradiative decay of excitons is facilitated by a thermally activated process, most likely a transition to a low-lying optically inactive trap state that is promoted by a low-frequency phonon mode.     

Folding and unfolding of an elastinlike oligopeptide: "inverse temperature transition," reentrance, and hydrogen-bond dynamics

The temperature-dependent behavior of a solvated oligopeptide, GVG(VPGVG), is investigated. Spectroscopic measurements, thermodynamic measurements, and molecular dynamics simulations find that this elastinlike octapeptide behaves as a two-state system that undergoes an "inverse temperature" folding transition and reentrant unfolding close to the boiling point of water. A molecular picture of these processes is presented, emphasizing changes in the dynamics of hydrogen bonding at the protein/water interface and peptide backbone librational entropy.     

A new route to aristocularine alkaloids: total synthesis of aristoyagonine

A short and efficient synthesis of aristocularines, involving the sequential construction of phosphorylated 4-alkoxyisoindolinones, Horner-type reaction, and ultimate cyclization by diaryl ether coupling, is disclosed. The success of this new conceptual approach is demonstrated by the total synthesis of the aristocularine alkaloid aristoyagonine.     

Practical synthesis of new and highly efficient ligands for the Suzuki reaction of aryl chlorides

A practical synthesis of a novel class of phosphine ligands, phosphino substituted N-aryl pyrroles (PAP ligands), has been developed. These ligands are applied in the palladium-catalyzed coupling of a variety of aryl and heteroaryl chlorides with phenylboronic acid showing exceedingly high turnover numbers at mild reaction temperatures and even at room temperature.
