Electron cotunneling transport in gold nanocrystal arrays

We describe current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of alkyl-ligated gold nanocrystals ~5 nm arrays in a long screening length limit. Arrays with different alkyl ligand lengths have been prepared to tune the electronic tunnel coupling between the nanocrystals. For long ligands, electronic diffusion occurs through sequential tunneling and follows activated laws, as a function of temperature σ∝e(-T(0)/T) and as a function of electric field I∝e(-E(0)/E). For better conducting arrays, i.e., with small ligands, the transport properties cross over to the cotunneling regime and follow Efros-Shklovskii laws as a function of temperature σ∝e(-(T(ES)/T)(1/2) and as a function of electric field I∝e(-(E)(ES)/E)(1/2). The data show that electronic transport in nanocrystal arrays can be tuned from the sequential tunneling to the cotunneling regime by increasing the tunnel barrier transparency.     

Subpicosecond pulse generation from a 1.56 μm mode-locked VECSEL

Near-transform-limited subpicosecond pulses at 1.56 μm were generated from an optically pumped InP-based vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) passively mode-locked at 2 GHz repetition rate with a fast InGaAsNSb/GaAs semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The SESAM microcavity resonance was adjusted via a selective etching of phase layers specifically designed to control the magnitude of both the modulation depth and the intracavity group delay dispersion of the SESAM. Using the same VECSEL chip, we observed that the mode-locked pulse duration could be reduced from several picoseconds to less than 1 ps with a detuned resonant SESAM.

This paper is devoted to stability properties of solutions to stochastic differential equations obtained by a stochastic Lyapunov method.     

Impulse capture basins of sets under impulse control systems

Given a target contained in a constrained set and an impulse control system governing the evolutions of runs or executions, that are hybrids of continuous and discrete evolutions, this paper studies and provides several characterizations of the capture basin of the target viable in the constrained set. It is the subset of initial runs from which start at least one run viable in the constrained set until it reaches the target in finite time. It also provides algorithms and regulation rules governing the runs that reach the targets while obeying state constraints.     

Formation of the Main Cores Present in Natural Products by Tandem Additions

A rapid route to 5,5‐ and 5,6‐ bicyclic systems is provided by an 1,3‐alkyl‐shift process mediated by a hypervalent iodine reagent on aromatics. The structures obtained contain several unsaturations with different behaviors and reactivities. Such diversity allows further elaborations for the rapid formation of compact systems present in a variety of natural products. The potential for further transformations has been demonstrated by performing a double Michael addition. This cyclization process is regio‐ and stereoselective due to the presence of a former benzylic substituent. Furthermore, an extension of this approach has been accomplished on indole derivatives.     

Set-valued solutions to the Cauchy problem for hyperbolic systems of partial differential inclusions

We prove the existence of global set-valued solutions to the Cauchy problem for partial differential equations and inclusions, with either single-valued or set-valued initial conditions. The method is based on the equivalence between this problem and problem of finding viability tubes of the associated characteristic system of ordinary differential equations. As an application we construct the value function of the Mayer problem arising in control theory. Received August 25, 1995     

Thermal conductivity as a probe of unconventional superconducting gap

We have carried out a comparative study of the thermal conductivity of two rectangular single crystals: a niobium sample and a detwinned YBCO. Thermal conductivity was measured as a function of the relative orientation of the crystaline axes and a magnetic field applied parallel to the sample plane. Different angular variations, two-fold for Nb and four-fold for YBCO, were observed in the two case. We discuss the microscopic effects related to the gap structure which are at the origin of this qualitative difference in the behavior of thermal conductivity in these two superconductors.     

Mobility of electrons in SnS2−xSex

The electrical resistivities and Hall constants of the semiconducting compounds SnS_2?xSe_x have been measured at temperatures ranging from 100 to 450 K and three donor ionization energies (0.013, 0.086 and 0.25 eV) have been identified. The Hall mobilities exhibit for T> 200K a temperature dependence of the form μ～ (T/T₀)^?n separating the SnS_2?xSe_x compounds into two groups one behaving like SnS₂ and the other like SnSe₂.     

Macroscopic traffic models: Shifting from densities to “Celerities”

The advent of techniques to measure velocities of “GPS equipped vehicles” using satellite technology, replacing the density of the road traffic sensors, motivates and justifies the revision of conceptual, mathematical algorithms and software based models. This paper summarizes studies on the traffic evolutions achieving the minimum of a congestion function controlled “macroscopic traffic velocities” called “celerities” instead of founding traffic regulation on the measures of traffic densities. The flux valued function is the Fenchel transform of the fundamental diagram and is a convex decreasing function. We use the properties of capture basins investigated in viability theory, specifically a Lax-Hopf formula characterizing them and the “Max-Plus” morphism of capture basins for deriving the statements proved in this paper. Traffic conditions involve as well boundary conditions or conditions on trajectories inside the domain.
