Speciation of silica in high-purity water

A 1-l water sample was concentrated to 20ml by freezing and analyzed for soluble, colloidal and insoluble silica by the spectrophotometric heteropoly blue method and by inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry. High-purity water obtained from a vitreous-silica sub-boiling distillation still contained a few micrograms of insoluble silica per liter.     

Effects of carbon filler on sorption and diffusion of gases through rubbery materials

Effects of carbon filler on the sorption and diffusion of carbon dioxide in natural rubber and in styrene-butadiene rubber have been studied. Sorption isotherms conform to Henry's law in unfilled rubber and to Langmuir's law in carbon black. The isotherms in filled rubber exhibit a combination of the two sorption modes. The Henry's law solubility parameter k_D increases with carbon filler content; the Langmuir saturation constant C′_A initially is constant with filler level, but then decreases abruptly when carbon particles begin to aggregate. The diffusion coefficient decreases with increasing filler content, presumably owing to geometric effects and to polymer chain immobilization in the interfacial regions.     

Conductive phthalocyanines under very high pressure

Vanadyl, thorium, lead, copper, zinc and metal-free phthalocyanines become appreciably conductive under the static pressure of up to several hundred kilobars. The least resistivity observed is 0.1 $\text{Ω}$-cm for vanadyl phthalocyanine. There appear minima in the curves showing resistance change with pressure for vanadyl, thorium, lead and metal-free phthalocyanines.     

Coating of borosilicate glass containers for preventing contamination in trace element analysis

Pyrex glass dishes are coated with amorphous 78 SiO₂—21 ZrO₂—1 Na₂0 (mol %) films ca. 50 nm thick. The coated dishes possess reasonable chemical resistance and can be successfully used in the dry ashing of a standard botanical sample for boron determinations and in the evaporation needed for aluminum determination in nitric acid.     

The reactions of oxindoles and isatin with nitrobenzyl chlorides Formation of 2′-hydroxy-spiro[2H-indole-2,3′-3′H-indole]

Oxindole reacts with p-nitrobenzyl chloride ot give 3-(4′-nitrobenzyl) oxindole, but with o-nitrobenzyl chloride abnormal product, 2′-hydroxy-spiro[2H-indole-2,3′-3′H-indole] (Vb) is produced. The structure of Vb has been elucidated on the basis of the IR, UV and mass spectra, and confirmed by the analogous reactions of 3-methyl-, 4-methyl- and 3,3-dimethyloxindoles with o-nitrobenzyl chloride. Isatin reacts with o-nitrobenzyl chloride to give o-nitrobenzyloxireno[,3]-oxindole (X).     

Absolute humidity measurement utilizing alpha-ray absorption

Changes in air density due to humidity were measured by a scintillation detector with alpha-particles. The distance between the scintillator and an alpha-ray source of 241 Am, 3.7 MBq (100 microCi), was fixed at 25 mm which was a little shorter than the range of alpha-particles from the source. The measured absolute humidities were in a range of 7.9 g/m3 to 52.2 g/m3 at temperatures of 35 degrees C and 45 degrees C and under atmospheric pressure. The counting rate of alpha-particles in an absolute humidity of 31.7 g/m3 (80% in relative humidity) at 35 degrees C increased 28% compared with that in dry air. From experimental results and theoretical calculation, the counting rate difference between humid air and dry air was shown to be almost proportional to the absolute humidity in air. The absolute humidity can be measured with an accuracy of +/- 3 g/m3, that is +/- 5% in relative humidity at 45 degrees C.
