Aggregation behaviors of gemini nucleotide at the air-water interface and in solutions induced by adenine-uracil interaction

Cationic gemini surfactants having nucleotides as counterions (called nucleo-gemini hereafter) were synthesized and their aggregation behavior at air-water surfaces as well as in bulk solutions were studied. Fluid solutions of these nucleo-gemini surfactants show transitions to hydrogels upon addition of complementary nucleoside bases or other nucleo-gemini surfactants having complementary bases as counterions. The FTIR-ATR measurements show that the carboxylate groups of uridine form hydrogen bonds with the amine groups of adenosine. The aggregation behavior was also confirmed at the air-water interface by Brewster angle microscopy as well as surface pressure measurements; the monolayer of a gemini nucleotide was observed to undergo a transition to multilayers when nucleosides with complementary bases were added into the subphase. Isotherm curves of surface pressure monitored in parallel show a decrease in molecular area upon addition of such nucleosides.     

Photoinduced morphism of gemini surfactant aggregates

The photochemical behaviour of an azobenzene chromophore inserted in a gemini surfactant imparts photocontrol to the resulting amphiphile assemblies, including the collapse, upon irradiation, of the multi lamellar vesicles formed in aqueous solution.     

Duplicated ring enlargement of 4,9-methanothia[11]annulene to 6,11-methanothia[15]annulene

3,10-Dipyrrolidinyl-4,9-methanothia[11]annulene reacts with excess dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) in refluxing toluene to give ring-enlarged 6,11-methanothia[15]annulene. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the product shows two different cis,trans-dienyl parts in the ring system. Product formation possibly involves π-facial selective addition of the enamine with DMAD and torque-selective ring opening of the intermediate cyclobutenes.     

Mixed-valence state of optically active 1',1'"-bis(2-phenylbutyl)-1,1''-biferrocenium pentaiodide: effects of cation symmetry and intermolecular interaction on trapped-/detrapped-valence states

The effects of cation symmetry and packing on the mixed-valence state of binuclear ferrocene derivatives are discussed separately by using chiral isomers and racemic modification of 1',1' "-bis(2-phenylbutyl)-1,1' '-biferrocenium pentaiodide. The pentaiodide anion has a polymeric structure and is composed of triiodide anion and iodine molecule units. The (R,S) isomer having an inversion center shows a detrapped-valence state even at 78 K. On the other hand, the (R,R) and the (S,S) isomers having no inversion center show a trapped-valence state at room temperature. The racemic modification, however, consisting of the (R,R) and the (S,S) isomers shows a perfect detrapped-valence state at room temperature. This finding shows that the packing effect overcomes the effect of cation asymmetry.     

Synthesis of thermally-induced phase separating polymer with well-defined polymer structure by living cationic polymerization. I. Synthesis of poly(vinyl ether)s with oxyethylene units in the pendant and its phase separation behavior in aqueous solution

Living cationic polymerization of alkoxyethyl vinyl ether [CH₂?CHOCH₂CH₂OR; R: CH₃ (MOVE), C₂H₅ (EOVE)] and related vinyl ethers with oxyethylene units in the pendant was achieved by 1-(isobutoxy)ethyl acetate ( 1 )/Et_1.5AlCl_1.5 initiating system in the presence of an added base (ethyl acetate or THF) in toluene at 0°C. The polymers had a very narrow molecular weight distribution (M?_w/M?_n = 1.1–1.2) and the M?_n proportionally increased with the progress of the polymerization reaction. On the other hand, the polymerization by 1 /EtAlCl₂ initiating system in the presence of ethyl acetate, which produces living polymer of isobutyl vinyl ether, yielded the nonliving polymer. When an aqueous solution of the polymers thus obtained was heated, the phase separation phenomenon was clearly observed in each polymer at a definite critical temperature (T_ps). For example, T_ps was 70°C for poly(MOVE), and 20°C for poly(EOVE) (1 wt % aqueous solution, M?_n ～ 2 × 10⁴). The phase separation for each case was quite sensitive (ΔT_ps = 0.3–0.5°C) and reversible on heating and cooling. The T_ps or ΔT_ps was clearly dependent not only on the structure of polymer side chains (oxyethylene chain length and ω-alkyl group), but also on the molecular weight (M?_n = 5 × 10³-7 × 10⁴) and its distribution. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Time-resolved fluorometric analysis of carbohydrates labeled with amino-aromatic compounds by reductive amination

We examined the formation of complexes between terbium ion (Tb3+) and carbohydrates labeled with aminobenzene compounds. Of the examined compounds, carbohydrates labeled with 4-aminosalicylic acid showed intense fluorescence with Tb3+ in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride at pH 6.0. Calibration curves for maltose derivative showed good linearity between 5 pmol and at least 600 pmol, with good reproducibility. We applied the proposed technique to binding studies between manno-oligosaccharides and Concanavalin A.     

Direct evidence for an intrinsic square vortex lattice in the overdoped high- T(c) superconductor La(1.83)Sr(0.17)CuO(4+delta)

We report here the first direct observations of a well ordered vortex lattice in the bulk of a La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+delta) single crystal (slightly overdoped, x = 0.17). Our small angle neutron scattering investigation of the mixed phase reveals a crossover from triangular to square coordination with increasing magnetic field. The existence of an intrinsic square vortex lattice has never been observed in high-temperature superconductors and is indicative of the coupling of the vortex lattice to a source of anisotropy, such as those provided by a d-wave order parameter or the presence of stripes.     

The synthesis of bicyclo[6.2.0]decapentaene

The parent bicyclo[6.2.0]decapentaene is synthesized for the first time by thermal ring opening of its valence isomer. Thermal dimerization of the compound is also described.
