Comparative evaluation of three alpha-hydroxycarboxylic acids for the separation of lanthanides by dynamically modified reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

The resolution for the three homologues of alpha-hydroxycarboxylic acids viz. lactic acid, alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid (alpha-HIBA) and alpha-hydroxy-alpha-methylbutyric acid (alpha-H-alpha-MBA), was compared for the individual separation of 14 lanthanide elements under identical experimental conditions. Alpha-HIBA was found to be the best for separation of heavier lanthanides (Tb to Lu) while alpha-H-alpha-MBA led to a better separation for lighter lanthanides (La to Eu). All the 14 lanthanides were separated by gradient HPLC employing both alpha-HIBA and alpha-H-alpha-MBA so that there was reasonable resolution among all the peaks and the separation was completed in a short time.     

A palladium catalysed cyclisation-carbonylation of bromodienes: control in carbonylation over facile beta-hydride elimination

Conditions have been found for the efficient palladium mediated cyclisation-carbonylation of bromodienes to give gamma,lambda-unsaturated acids.     

Highly selective aziridination of imines using trimethylsilyldiazomethane and applications of C-silylaziridines in synthesis

Trimethylsilyldiazomethane has been found to add directly to N-sulfonyl (Ts and SES) imines to afford aziridines in good yields and high cis stereoselectivities. The silyl group can be substituted by treatment with a fluoride source and electrophiles again with high selectivity. Complete regioselectivity is observed in ring opening of these aziridines with nucleophiles.     

Spectrophotometric determination of some antiamoebic and anthelmintic drugs with metol and chromium(VI)

A sensitive spectrophotometric method is reported for the determination of tinidazole (TZ), metronidazole (MZ), benzoyl metronidazole (BMZ) or niclosamide (NS) either in pure form or in formulations. This method is based on reduction with zinc dust and hydrochloric acid followed by reaction with metol and potassium dichromate at pH 3.0 +/- 0.2 to give a coloured product having maximum absorbance at 720 nm (for TZ, MZ and BMZ) or 530 nm (for NS).     

Cross sections and transverse single-spin asymmetries in forward neutral-pion production from proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV

Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s]< or =20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)>1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.     

Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations at large transverse momenta in p + p and Au + Au collisions at square root sNN=200 GeV

Results on high transverse momentum charged particle emission with respect to the reaction plane are presented for Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. Two- and four-particle correlations results are presented as well as a comparison of azimuthal correlations in Au + Au collisions to those in p + p at the same energy. The elliptic anisotropy v(2) is found to reach its maximum at p(t) approximately 3 GeV/c, then decrease slowly and remain significant up to p(t) approximately 7-10 GeV/c. Stronger suppression is found in the back-to-back high-p(t) particle correlations for particles emitted out of plane compared to those emitted in plane. The centrality dependence of v(2) at intermediate p(t) is compared to simple models based on jet quenching.     

Small-core As-Se fiber for Raman amplification

We have demonstrated Raman small-core As-Se fiber. More than 20-dB of gain was observed in a 1.1-m length of fiber pumped by a nanosecond pulse of approximately 10.8-W peak power at 1.50 microm. The peak of the Raman gain occurred at a shift of approximately 240 cm(-1). The Raman gain coefficient is estimated to be approximately 2.3 x 10(-11) m/W, which is more than 300 times greater than that of silica. The large Raman gain coefficient coupled with the large IR transparency window of these fibers shows promise for development of As-Se Raman fiber lasers and amplifiers in the near-, mid-, and long-IR spectral regions.     

Wavelength beam combining of ytterbium fiber lasers

Wavelength beam combining of five ytterbium fiber lasers is demonstrated in a master-oscillator power-amplifier configuration at combined powers up to 6 W. The combined beam profile has an M2 value of 1.14, which is equal to that of an individual fiber. Beam steering in one dimension over 140 resolvable spots is also demonstrated.     

Palladium catalysed cyclisation-carbonylation of enynes to give cyclic gamma,delta-unsaturated acids

In the presence of acetic acid, trifurylphosphine and CO (2 atm), palladium catalyses the conversion of a range of enynes to cyclic delta,gamma-unsaturated carboxylic acids in good yield.
