Neue Chlorsilyl- und Alkoxysilyl-alkyl-peroxide

The alkyl-chlorosilyl-peroxides1 and2, the alkoxysilylalkyl-peroxides3 to7 (Table 1) as well as the hitherto unknown chlorosilanes (n-PrO)Me ₂SiCl and (t-BuO)Me ₂SiCl were prepared, isolated and characterized by analytical and¹H-NMR data. Attempts to isolate the unstable peroxides (i-PrO)₃SiOOCMe ₃ and (Me ₃CO)Me ₂SiOOCMe ₂ Ph failed.     

Condensed Metal Clusters

The chemistry of metals in low valence states is marked by the frequent occurrence of metal clusters, which are easily recognizable when they occur as molecular units. Many metal-rich compounds of transition metals with p-elements (3rd to the 6th main groups) are closely related to the corresponding halides, since they are built up from metal clusters of the same type. The clusters are however, linked together (condensed) by metal-metal bonds. This principle of construction holds particularly well in the case of the novel reduced halides of the lanthanoids.     

New type of dry substances content meter using microwaves for application in biogas plants

Dry substances (DS) are an important index for monitoring and controlling anaerobic co-digestion in biogas plants. We have developed and tested an online meter that measures suspended solids by means of the reflection coefficient of an exiting microwave signal, which is dependent on the dielectric properties of the suspensions. Intelligent models based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) and artificial neural network (ANN) for calibration allow exact and reproducible measurements under different circumstances. This measuring method is appropriate for contactless and online measurements of dry substance contents in biogas plants in a large range from 2–14%.     

La3Br3Ni: Jahn–Teller Distortion in the Reduced Rare Earth Metal Halide

A ternary lanthanum bromide La₃Br₃Ni was synthesized from lanthanum, LaBr₃ and nickel under argon at 800 °C. It crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4₁22 (No. 98) with lattice constants a = 12.1758(9) Å and c = 11.744(2) Å. The structure is derived from the cubic Gd₃I₃C type of space group I4₁32 through a tetragonal distortion resulting in a squeezed nickel‐centered La₆ octahedron. Electronic structure and bonding of the compound have been investigated.
