We study an ensemble of two-level systems interacting with a thermal bath. This is a well-known model for glasses. The origin of memory effects in this model is a quasistationary but nonequilibrium state of a single two-level system, which is realized due to a finite-rate cooling and slow thermally activated relaxation. We show that single-particle memory effects, such as negativity of the specific heat under reheating, vanish for a sufficiently disordered ensemble. In contrast, a disordered ensemble displays a collective memory effect [similar to the Kovacs effect], where nonequilibrium features of the ensemble are monitored via a macroscopic observable. An experimental realization of the effect can be used to further assess the consistency of the model. 相似文献

Salbutamol is commonly used in asthma treatment, being considered a short‐effect bronchodilator. This drug poses special interest in certain fields of chemical analysis, such as food, clinical and doping analyses, in which it needs to be analyzed with quantitative precision and accuracy. Salbutamol, however, is known to degrade under certain conditions and this is critical if quantitative results must be generated. The present work aimed to investigate salbutamol extraction from urine samples, to determine whether salbutamol is unstable in other solvents as well as in urine samples, to elucidate the structures of the possible degradation products and to validate an analytical method using the extraction procedure evaluated. Stability investigations were performed in urine at different pH values, in methanol and acetone at different temperatures. Semi‐preparative liquid chromatography was performed for the isolation of degradation products, and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry as well as nuclear magnetic resonance were used for identification. Three unreported methylation products were detected in methanolic solutions and had their structures elucidated. Urine samples showed a reduction in salbutamol concentration of up to 25.8% after 5 weeks. These results show that special care must be taken regarding salbutamol quantitative analyses, since degradation either in standard solutions or in urine could lead to incorrect values. Photoelectrochemical cells with TiO2 electrodes to convert sunlight and water into gaseous hydrogen and oxygen are a source of clean and renewable fuel. Despite their great potential, far-from-ideal performance and poor utilization of the solar spectrum have prevented them from becoming a widespread and practical technology. We review recent experimental work that uses dynamics measurements to study limitations of photoelectrochemical cells from a fundamental level and the use of TiO2 nanotube arrays as a superior alternative to TiO2 nanoparticles. Through a combination of nanoscale size control, doping, composite materials, and the incorporation of noble-metal nanoparticles, improved performance and light harvesting are demonstrated. 相似文献

We report the computational implementation of a combined spin-density-functional theory and perturbation theory (SDFT-PT) methodology for the accurate calculation of zero-field splittings (ZFS) in complexes of the most diverse nature including metal centers in proteins. We have applied the SDFT-PT methodology to study the cation of the recently synthesized complex [Fe(IV)(O)-(TMC)(NCCH(3))](OTf)(2), [J. Rohde et al., Science 299, 1037 (2003)] which is an important structural and functional analog of high-valent intermediates in catalytic cycles of nonheme iron enzymes. The calculated value (D(Theory)=28.67 cm(-1)) is in excellent agreement with the unusually large ZFS reported by experiment (D(Exp)=29+/-3 cm(-1)). The principal component D(zz) of the ZFS tensor is oriented along the Fe(IV)=oxo bond indicating that the oxo ligand dominates the electronic structure of the complex. 相似文献

A study of the two‐dimensional hydrogen atom confined within a circle of impenetrable walls is presented. The potential inside the box is Coulomb type, whereas outside it is infinite. The energy eigenvalues and some radial wave function properties are computed with high accuracy for different box sizes. We derive the polarizability in the Kirkwood approximation, calculate the Fermi contact term as a function of the confinement radius, and investigate the filling order of the one‐electron states. When the electronic configuration of many electrons is constructed by means of the Aufbau principle, the model predicts the inversion 2s–3d levels in the N atom. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we study subrings of the Ext-algebra of a graded module over a graded ring R. We show these subrings can be defined by equivalence relations on exact sequences over the ring.
