Spectroscopic and MS techniques were used to characterize the pigments and the composition of polar and nonpolar binders of a stray wall painting fragment from Liternum (Italy) archaeological excavation. X‐ray fluorescence and diffraction analysis of the decorations indicated mainly the presence of calcite, quartz, hematite, cinnabar, and cuprorivaite. Infrared spectroscopy, GC coupled to flame‐ionization detector, and MS analysis of the polar and nonpolar components extracted from paint layers from three different color regions revealed the presence of free amino acids, sugars, and fatty acids. Interestingly, LC‐MS shotgun analysis of the red painting region showed the presence of αS1‐casein of buffalo origin. Compared to our previous results from Pompeii's wall paintings, even though the Liternum painting mixture contained also binders of animal origin, the data strongly suggest that in both cases a tempera painting technique was utilized.  相似文献

A new type of nanomaterial has been developed as antibacterial additive for food packaging applications. This nanocomposite is composed of copper nanoparticles embedded in polylactic acid, combining the antibacterial properties of copper nanoparticles with the biodegradability of the polymer matrix. Metal nanoparticles have been synthesised by means of laser ablation, a rising and easy route to prepare nanostructures without any capping agent in a liquid environment. As prepared, nanoparticle suspensions have been easily mixed to a polymer solution. The resulting hybrid solutions have been deposited by drop casting, thus obtaining self-standing antibacterial packages. All samples have been characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electro-thermal atomic absorption spectroscopy. Ion release data have been matched with bioactivity tests performed by Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) method (JIS Z 2801:2000) against Pseudomonas spp., a very common Gram-negative microbial group able to proliferate in processed food.  相似文献

A multi-gram scale protocol for the N-acyl amidation of bile acids with glycine and taurine has been successfully developed under continuous flow processing conditions. Selecting ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) as the model compound and N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ) as the condensing agent, a modular mesoreactor assisted flow set-up was employed to significantly speed up the optimization of the reaction conditions and the flow scale-up synthesis. The results in terms of yield, in line purification, analysis, and implemented flow set-up for the reaction optimization and large scale production are reported and discussed.  相似文献

A simple protocol, based on Bligh–Dyer (BD) extraction followed by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis, for fast identification of paint binders in single microsamples is proposed. For the first time it is demonstrated that the BD method is effective for the simultaneous extraction of lipids and proteins from complex, and atypical matrices, such as pigmented paint layers. The protocol makes use of an alternative denaturing anionic detergent (RapiGest™) in order to improve efficiency of protein digestion and purification step. Detection of various lipid classes, such as triacylglycerols (TAGs) and phospholipids (PLs), and their oxidation by-products was accomplished, whereas proteins could be identified by peptide mass fingerprinting. The effect of pigments on ageing of lipids and proteins was also investigated.  相似文献

As a part of a systematic study aimed at assessing the chemical composition of ancient pigments as well as at collecting information useful for the understanding of the technical aspects related to pottery preservation and decoration, the results of analysis performed on red, brown and black pigments decorating pre-Roman pottery excavated in thirteen different tombs unearthed in the archaeological zone of Canosa (Puglia, Italy) are presented. Both surface (XPS) and bulk (FT-IR) spectroscopies were used which gave complementary information and XRD was used in some cases to further support the spectral assignments. Results suggested that the shards characterized by “nominally” the same color could be differentiated by the chemical composition of the pigmented layers; in particular, the shards exhibiting the red pigment could be divided into three groups containing, respectively, either hematite or ochre plus other substances not related to the color but of great concern for the understanding of ancient techniques used for color preparation. Manganese oxides were found to be the basis of the brown pigments, which could be divided into three groups on the basis of Mn and Fe contents. Either magnetite or carbon of vegetable origin was found in the black-pigmented layers. Furthermore, an attempt was made to find a possible correlation between this classification and the results of a provenance study carried out on the same pool of shards analyzed in the present investigation. Diagnostic techniques applied to the field of cultural heritage represent a very important aspect of scientific investigation. Recently, proteomic approaches based on mass spectrometry coupled with traditional spectroscopic methods have been used for painting analysis, generating promising results for binder’s protein identification. In the present work, an improved procedure based on LC-ESI/Q-q-TOF tandem mass spectrometry for the identification of protein binders has been developed for the molecular characterization of samples from an early-twentieth-century mural painting from the St. Dimitar Cathedral in Vidin, Bulgaria. The proteomic investigation has led to the identification of both egg white and egg yolk proteins, according to traditional old recipes for tempera paintings. In addition, beyond the egg components, the presence of caseins was also revealed, thus suggesting the use of milk as binding medium, fixative or stabilising agent. Furthermore, for the first time, the capability to discriminate the milk origin on the basis of alpha casein proteotypic peptides is reported, that are diagnostic for a given species, thus opening interesting perspectives in art and archaeological fields.  相似文献

Microbial colonization and biofilm formation on implanted devices represent an important complication in orthopaedic and dental surgery and may result in implant failure. Controlled release of antibacterial agents directly at the implant site may represent an effective approach to treat these chronic complications. Resistance to conventional antibiotics by pathogenic bacteria has emerged in recent years as a major problem of public health. In order to overcome this problem, non-conventional antimicrobial agents have been under investigation. In this study, polyacrylate-based hydrogel thin coatings have been electrosynthesised on titanium substrates starting from poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate)–co–acrylic acid. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a narrow size distribution have been synthesized using a “green” procedure and immobilized on Ti implant surfaces exploiting hydrogel coatings’ swelling capabilities. The coatings have been characterized by XPS and SEM/EDX, while their silver release performances have been monitored by ICP–MS. The antibacterial activity of these AgNP-modified hydrogel coatings was tested evaluating in vitro inhibition growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, among the most common pathogens in orthopaedic infections. Moreover, a preliminary investigation of the biocompatibility of silver-loaded coatings versus MG63 human osteoblast-like cells has been performed. An important point of strength of this paper, in fact, is the concern about the effect of silver species on the surrounding cell system in implanted medical devices. Silver ion release has been properly tuned in order to assure antibacterial activity while preserving osteoblasts’ response at the implant interface.

In the present, contribution angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-XPS) was proposed as a useful tool to address the challenge of probing the near-surface region of bio-active sensor surfaces. A model bio-functionalised surface was characterised by parallel AR-XPS and commercially available Thermo Avantage-ARProcess software was used to generate non-destructive concentration depth profiles of protein-functionalised silicon oxide substrates. At each step of the functionalisation procedure, the surface composition, the overlayer thickness, the in-depth organisation and the in-plane homogeneity were evaluated. The critical discussion of the generated profiles highlighted the relevance of the information provided by PAR-XPS technique.
