Composition of oxygen precipitates in Czochralski silicon wafers investigated by STEM with EDX/EELS and FTIR spectroscopy

In this work, we investigated the stoichiometry of oxygen precipitates in Czochralski silicon wafers. The thickness dependence of the Cliff–Lorimer sensitivity factor for the silicon/oxygen system was determined and applied for the investigation of the stoichiometry of oxygen precipitates by EDX. The results show that both plate‐like oxygen precipitates and a transitional form between plate‐like and octahedral precipi‐ tates consist of SiO₂. This was confirmed by EELS low loss spectra where the typical spectrum for amorphous SiO₂ was observed. Moreover, the absorption band of plate‐like precipitates at 1227 cm^–1 was found in the low temperature FTIR spectrum. Crystalline Pr:SrAl12O19 waveguide laser in the visible spectral region

We fabricated waveguides in Pr:SrAl(12)O(19) crystals by direct femtosecond laser writing. The propagation losses were calculated to be as low as 0.16 dB/cm at a wavelength of 633 nm. Laser oscillation in a diode-pumped waveguide at a wavelength of 643.5 nm was realized. The output power of the waveguide laser was 28.1 mW at a slope efficiency of 8%.     

Continuous-wave simultaneous dual-wavelength operation at 912 nm and 1063 nm in Nd:GdVO<Subscript>4</Subscript>

A continuous-wave, diode-pumped Nd:GdVO₄ thin disk laser with simultaneous dual-wavelength emission at the 912 nm ⁴ F _3/2→⁴ I _9/2 quasi-three-level transition and the 1063 nm ⁴ F _3/2→⁴ I _11/2 four-level transition is demonstrated and analyzed. Output powers of 1.7 W at 912 nm and of 1.6 W at 1063 nm were achieved simultaneously from a 0.3-at.%, 300-μm thick Nd:GdVO₄ crystal that was multi-pass excited with 26.8 W of available diode pump power. Second harmonic generation to 456 nm with LiB₃O₅ yielded 0.96 W in 912 nm single-wavelength operation and 0.73 W in 912 nm/1063 nm dual-wavelength operation. PACS 42.55.Rz; 42.60.By; 42.65.Ky     

Onset of quark-hadron duality in pion electroproduction

A large data set of charged-pion (pi+/-) electroproduction from both hydrogen and deuterium targets has been obtained spanning the low-energy residual-mass region. These data conclusively show the onset of the quark-hadron duality phenomenon, as predicted for high-energy hadron electroproduction. We construct several ratios from these data to exhibit the relation of this phenomenon to the high-energy factorization ansatz of electron-quark scattering and subsequent quark-->pion production mechanisms.     

Space-Charge Effects with REXTRAP

The beam quality of radioactive ion beams produced by present target ion source technology is often not sufficient for direct post-acceleration. Furthermore, pulsed beams insure a more efficient use of an accelerator. In the case of REX-ISOLDE, the post accelerator at the CERN ISOLDE facility, a gas-filled Penning trap (REXTRAP) has been chosen for accumulation of the radioactive ions and conversion into cooled bunches. Radial centering of the ions is achieved by applying an rf field with a frequency equal to the cyclotron frequency of the desired ion species. The efficiency achieved in the first tests with different isotopes covering nearly the entire mass range was already >20%. Going to total numbers of >10⁵ stored ions in the trap a shift of the centering frequency could be observed, which is most likely due to space charge effects. Despite this, it was possible to accumulate up to 10⁷ ions and deliver them as cooled bunches. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Tris[2‐(1,3‐thiazol‐2‐yl‐κN)‐1H‐benzimidazole‐κN3]zinc(II) dinitrate ethanol hemisolvate monohydrate at 100 K

The Zn^II center in the dicationic complex of the title compound, [Zn(C₁₀H₇N₃S)₃](NO₃)₂·0.5C₂H₅OH·H₂O, is in a distorted octahedral environment with imperfect noncrystallographic C₃ symmetry. Each 2‐(1,3‐thiazol‐2‐yl)‐1H‐benzimidazole ligand coordinates in a bidentate manner, with the Zn—N(imidazole) bond lengths approximately 0.14 Å shorter than the Zn—N(thiazole) bond lengths. Charge‐assisted hydrogen bonds connect cations, anions and water molecules. A lattice void is occupied by an ethanol solvent molecule disordered about a crystallographic inversion center and π‐stacking is observed between one type of symmetry‐related benzene rings.
