Dynamics of 2D anisotropic solids,smectics and nematics

In this research we study the critical dynamics of anisotropic layers in the various transition and crossover regimes associated with a defect unbinding picture of the melting process. We derive dynamic equations of motion for anisotropic solids, smectics and nematics, in the presence of defects and predict the critical behavior of various transport coefficients. The theory is applicable to two-dimensional layers of freely suspended liquid crystals, on which dynamic light-scattering experiments can be performed to test the predictions of the theory.

The preparation of macrocyclic thiolactones by condensation of diacyl chlorides with siladithianes is described.     

Application of dn/dc data for the determination of partial specific volumes of dissolved macromolecules. II. Partial specific volume of ovalbumin in aqueous solution

The theory of an interferometric method for determining partial specific volumes of macromolecules is briefly reviewed. The experimental technique developed in this laboratory is described. Detailed results are given on the partial specific volume of ovalbumin in aqueous solution and its dependence on pH and KCl concentration. The results are compared, as far as possible, with dilatometric results obtained in another laboratory. The contribution of a change in partial specific volume of the macromolecules and in the partial specific volume of the water associated with them to the results is analyzed, and the scope of a possible complication due to changes in molecular polarizability is pointed out.     

α-Phenylselenenylation of zirconium or aluminum enolates

Zirconium or aluminum O-enolates undergo selenenylation with PhSeBr to give α-(phenylselenenyl) ketones in good to excellent yield.     

Space and time variations of the order parameter and other relevant quantities within a short superconducting weak link

We have numerically solved the microscopic equations of Golub for the space and time variations of the order parameter, supercurrent, and normal current within a current biased short superconducting weak link. Two limiting cases are considered. We also use a perturbation method to solve for the I–V characteristics of a weak link, and show that they are cosistent with experiment.     

Spectra of inert-gas matrices containing bismuth: ground-state frequency of Bi2

Bi, Bi₂, Bi₄, and possibly Bi₃ in inert-gas matrices were observed and characterized. Their spectra exhibit negligible shifts from matrix to matrix and, when known, from gas to matrix. The Bi₂ Raman frequency in Ne is measured at 173 ± 1 cm^?1, in excellent agreement with the gas phase.
