A method for relating traveling-wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) drift times with collisional cross-sections using computational simulations is presented. This method is developed using SIMION modeling of the TWIMS potential wave and equations that describe the velocity of ions in gases induced by electric fields. The accuracy of this method is assessed by comparing the collisional cross-sections of 70 different reference ions obtained using this method with those obtained from static drift tube ion mobility measurements. The cross-sections obtained here with low wave velocities are very similar to those obtained using static drift (average difference?=?0.3%) for ions formed from both denaturing and buffered aqueous solutions. In contrast, the cross-sections obtained with high wave velocities are significantly greater, especially for ions formed from buffered aqueous solutions. These higher cross-sections at high wave velocities may result from high-order factors not accounted for in the model presented here or from the protein ions unfolding during TWIMS. Results from this study demonstrate that collisional cross-sections can be obtained from single TWIMS drift time measurements, but that low wave velocities and gentle instrument conditions should be used in order to minimize any uncertainties resulting from high-order effects not accounted for in the present model and from any protein unfolding that might occur. Thus, the method presented here eliminates the need to calibrate TWIMS drift times with collisional cross-sections measured using other ion mobility devices.

Reinforcing of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films by partial dissolution with N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) was investigated. The method investigated is composed of impregnation of CNF film with liquid solution of NMMO followed by dry heat activation. The heat activation of the impregnated film was carried out using a heated calendering nip, which enabled simultaneous heating and compression. The partial dissolution of cellulose by NMMO caused a significant increase in the transparency of CNF film due to the decrease of film porosity and increased surface smoothness. The dry strength of the reinforced film was increased from 122 up to 195 MPa. Furthermore, the wet strength of the reinforced film was up to 70% greater than the dry strength of pure CNF film. The changes in the fibrillar structure were investigated with topographical imaging (SEM and AFM) and spectroscopically using NMR and FTIR. No significant changes in the fibril structure or cellulose morphology were observed. Moreover, the treated film resisted significant water pressure, highlighting CNF film’s permanent water resistance. The partial dissolution process with NMMO was also capable of reinforcing a CNF composite film with macro scale structural elements (lyocell short-cut fibres). The strategy investigated is a robust and fast method to improve the mechanical properties of fibrillary cellulose films, allowing them utilization in applications where improved water resistance and fully cellulosic character are required properties.  相似文献

As a result of the increased focus on data literacy and data science across the world, there has been a large demand for professional development in statistics. However, exactly how these professional development opportunities should be structured remains an open question. The purpose of this paper is to describe the first iteration of a design experiment involving Project-SET (www.project-set.com) professional development program. Project-SET provided professional development to enhance teachers’ understanding of statistics concepts. The project constructed two learning trajectories for teacher learning and subsequently used the learning trajectories to structure the professional development curriculum. The main goal of this paper is to illustrate how the utilization of the teacher-learning trajectories to structure the professional development allowed participating teachers to develop several aspects of Statistics Knowledge for Teaching (Groth, 2013).  相似文献

Vortex roll-up processes of different generic wingtip shapes are investigated using the DLR TAU flow solver in combination with a Reynolds Stress Model. In contrast to a non-rounded layout an elliptical rounding of the wingtip planform leads to multiple vortices at the wingtip and results in an axial velocity deficit in the vortex core further downstream. We contrast and compare three ways of predicting efficiency in a forced contribution threshold public good game. The three alternatives are based on ordinal potential, quantal response and impulse balance theory. We report an experiment designed to test the respective predictions and find that impulse balance gives the best predictions. A simple expression detailing when enforced contributions result in high or low efficiency is provided.  相似文献

This study investigates young students’ writing in connection to mathematical problem solving. Students’ written communication has traditionally been used by mathematics teachers in the assessment of students’ mathematical knowledge. This study rests on the notion that this writing represents a particular activity which requires a complex set of resources. In order to help students develop their writing, teachers need to have a thorough knowledge of mathematical writing and its distinctive features. The study aims to add to the body of knowledge about writing in school mathematics by investigating young students’ mathematical writing from a communicational, rather than mathematical, perspective. A basic inventory of the communicational choices, that are identifiable across a sample of 519 mathematical texts, produced by 9–12 year old students, is created. The texts have been analysed with multimodal discourse analysis, and the findings suggest diversity in students’ use of images, words, numerals, symbols and layout to organize their texts and to represent their problem-solving process along with an answer to the problem. The inventory and the indication that students have different ideas on how, what, for whom and why they should be writing, can be used by teachers to initiate discussions of what may constitute good communication.  相似文献
