Systematic optimisation of high-performance liquid chromatographic separation by varying the temperature, gradient, and stationary phase

Optimisation of the separation of a synthetic drug mixture by HPLC is performed by changing both continuous variables, i.e. mobile phase composition and temperature, and categorical variables, here the stationary phase. The retention of solutes is described on the basis of a general linear model in which the different columns are modelled by indicator variables. From the solute-specific retention models the global separation optimum is evaluated on the basis of multidimensional window diagrams using relative retentions of all peak pairs as the figure-of-merit.     

Controlling the coulomb explosion of silver clusters by femtosecond dual-pulse laser excitation

Silver clusters grown in helium nanodroplets are excited by intense femtosecond laser pulses resulting in the formation of a hot electron plasma far from equilibrium. The ultrafast dynamics is studied by applying optically delayed dual pulses, which allows us to pursue and control the coupling of the laser field to the clusters on a femtosecond time scale. A distinct influence of the optical delay on the ionization efficiency gives strong evidence that a significant contribution of collective dipolar electron motion is present, which is verified by corresponding Vlasov dynamics simulations on a model system. The microscopic approach demonstrates the outstanding role of giant resonances in clusters also in intense laser fields.     

Spin-dependent electron dynamics in front of a ferromagnetic surface

Exchange splitting and dynamics of image-potential states in front of a 3 monolayer iron film on Cu(100) have been studied with time-, energy-, and spin-resolved bichromatic two-photon photoemission. For the first image-potential state n=1 we observe an exchange splitting of 56 +/- 10 meV and spin-dependent lifetimes of 16 +/- 2 fs for majority-spin and of 11 +/- 2 fs for minority-spin electrons, respectively. The time-resolved studies of both the population and the linewidth of image-potential states manifest that at the magnetic surface not only inelastic but also quasielastic scattering processes are spin dependent.     

Donor-substituted peralkynylated "radiaannulenes": novel all-carbon macrocycles with an intense intramolecular charge-transfer

A novel class of planar, highly conjugated all-carbon macrocycles, which we christened "radiaannulenes", have been prepared based on acetylenic scaffolding using tetraethynylethene (TEE) building blocks; these structures are powerful electron acceptors and, upon peripheral substitution with electron-donating N,N-dialkylanilino groups, display intense intramolecular charge-transfer.
